To be fair, athena clarified to kratos that olympus and zeus are one and the same. If one is destroyed, then so is the other. Kratos went along with it and said fuck it.
Athena was nowhere to be found throughout the whole journey and then at the last minute she comes out of the shadows to stop kratos
To be fair, in GOW 3 every god is given a chance by Kratos to flee and they choose to fight him and then get killed

Why did Kratos think he needed Pandora’s box to kill Zeus in GOW 3? He 100% could have done it here had Athena not intervened
Athena’s Greed tricked him to get it thinking he would return the favor after getting it all done. She however did not realize that Kratos had a change of heart after spending quite some time with Pandora that he could do more aside from seeking vengeance.
