The flavor of the privet honey in our area is bad. Everyone here agrees with that. A small amount in the overall crop isn't too bad but if there's a lot of it the resulting honey is not something we bottle straight. I've had comments from viewers in other regions that say they like privet but it must either be a different variety of privet or perhaps a much different soil type. I had the same bad flavor from privet when I used to have bees in south Georgia and noticed the same taste in honey I purchased from the panhandle in Florida. There are a lot of different varieties of privet, the main ones being Chinese privet and Japanese privet. We have the Chinese variety here.

Thanks for the video! My bees packed in the black locust, I just about got behind them. It was fast & furious for about 5 days. They’re now focused on tulip poplar, Dutch clover & brambles.

Sometimes I don’t know the exact source of my own honey and sometimes I do. Maybe you should put together a tasting/sampling package of the different honeys from your area. I would definitely be a buyer!
I have always used soiled straw from the lambing pens in the barn. It burns slow, cool and long. I’ll have to try adding hardwood pellets as I would like it to last a bit longer. Thanks for the ‘candid camera’ video. I got some great ideas (like blowing out the honey supers!)

That was the fastest I've seen a pinestraw smoker get going without a torch. After some videos about staring campfires with charcloth, I am experimenting with having some charred pinestraw in the bottom before I add the fresh. Maybe I'm just being lazy about emptying. And I get to see what room a honey house needs in this video. Long dream of mine was to open a co-op type sanitary kitchen in the area. Still is a dream.
Bob the use of wood pellets in your smoker is a great idea. I bought a bag and tried it today. Only lit the smoker once in 4 hours. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, strong (and healthy) colonies and full sun. I can't say we don't have any but our problems are minor when compared to some other beekeepers I know.

Major question on Single Brood Chambers with queen excluder ..I have close to 100 of them and its interesting that i find they make more honey sometimes than a double ...ya wonder why is that is. In your head you would think more bees make more honey but i dont see it myself.....People dont believe me but i see it all the time...thanks Bob!!

Very interesting. Not sure which variety of privet we have in eastern S.C., but ours has a good taste. I'll have to pay more attention to our persimmon.
Less swarmin can be becouse the bees start guarding, using the upper entrance. Bees will use the area. That means the forager will come there and leave honey uppstares and by that no nectar, even for middle strorage before moved up will plug the empty cells. Im allways supering early, with last years extracted supers. The go up there and clean honey residues and start filling it early. And dont see the excluder as a roof..My 10 cents.
Black locust just starting in Michigan noticed blooms just starting to peak thru .. Autumn Olive and honeysuckle running hard right now in Michigan . Sweet clover like knee high but we're couple weeks away from yellow sweet clover and 3 weeks after that will have white sweet clover in full bloom .. after that bees get very narrow minded all they want is that sweet clover nectar .. about time that's winding down our famous knapweed gets going AKA star thistle .
We had a terrible mesquite flow here in South Texas. They bloomed about 6 weeks early and it only lasted a couple weeks. Until recently, we hadn’t had any rain since October.
Bob, I’ll follow your instructions videos continuously enjoy and learn from them. I do you have an offbeat question. Do the bees make the honeycomb with pollen and nectar converted to honey. I am in North Alabama and we have virtually have had no pollen and flow and the foundation appears not to have expanded in the hives. 2nd year newbee. Thank you in advance for your comments
First I have to say that I'm not very knowledgable on this. My limited understanding is that beeswax is primarily produced from sugars in honey. A couple of times, I too have noticed bees filling comb but not drawing foundation on a good flow. I'm not sure why. Our sourwood flow provides almost zero pollen yet the bees draw comb out well as long as it's coming in good.
In uk baling twine had something foul to deter mice from chewing it, that was sisal fibre. I have a freind who gets a hemp fibre product from the pet shop,it gives a cool white smoke but lfound it throws sparks, no good in summer.
I got a question for you Bob. I'm in Maryland and local area like city and farm land on the same elevation down in the valley had black locust blooming at the same time but going up the mountain only 3 miles away and about maybe 1/2 mile elevation the Black locust is coming in after a week when it quit down lower. Was that a temperature related change or something else?
Elevation effects everything here. The first yards seen in this video are around 1600 ft. and the privet is completely over but our yards above 2000 still have a week to go.
Bob, Every one of your videos are wealth of information and I have learned so much from you while enjoying your sour wood honey. I have a question. After I removed my suppers and extracted the honey manually using ladle and large pot and a colander I came up with lots of soft wax that still has some honey in it. I do not use the wax for any purpose and in prior years just put them in the yard and bees took it all. I am thinking that this year I make little cubes out of them and freeze them and from time to time place them inside the hives instead of pollen patties. In particular during mild CA winter. Again, because it has some honey inside it are such patties a good replacement for pollen patties and will it help my bees. Thanks

Bob the nectar has just about cut off here. ( Central Virginia) The sour wood will be blooming in a few weeks. Hopefully they will produce something. I have to have one of those bumper stickers for my bee truck

If there’s any question of it being suggestive, it could say Real beekeepers work in the rain. I’m always learning something from you Bob. I made a big mistake this year on my first grafts of the year. I waited until the next day to drop in queen cells in my splits and 80% started supercedure cells. It was less than 24 hrs but too long obviously. I noticed about 50% of my grafts hatched but a lot of supercedure cells hatched also. My grafted queen hatched long before supercedure queens but yet didn’t kill those cells. Any thoughts on this?
We struggle with this from time to time also. One batch of nucs will be 95% our queens and the next will be 60%. The sweet spot seems to be between 6 and 12 hours for introduction and the riper the cell is when it's installed the better.
Bob need those stickers available at hive life conference in retail display if you still plan to do that I need one for my ton truck too ! I got some honey out yesterday and I noticed the earlier honey that was capped is dark and the new nectar is really light color. I don't know what they got on first here but they really packed it up fast and still bringing it in. I'm in north alabama.

Yes it can change the taste, especially if used excessively. It's easy to overdo it. However, I wouldn't go so far as to say that any usage is a bad idea. After all, we need to keep the bees under control to get our work done. Moderation is the key.
Hey Bob, I got a really aggressive established hive. I went through it a couple weeks ago, didn’t find a queen or eggs, found some queen cells and older capped brood and maybe a frame of older larvae….mostly nectar (2 deeps, 2 supers) in Southwest Florida. How do you suggest requeening a established hive? I bought a new queen from Ed Coleman and added her by his directions but I’m hesitant to get into the hive because they’re already chasing/stinging my family. I’m on 2 acres. 15 hives are a couple hundred feet away.
Queenless colonies can get extra defensive at times and therefore can be tricky to requeen. The older bees are the most defensive and you now have a box full of older bees. If Ed's queen was excepted they may settle down after her bees start hatching. Perhaps give them some time. To requeen, as long as the colony has been made queenless, introducing an established nuc in a box over a newspaper, with a few thin cuts in it, is the best way to requeen.
A question for any experienced beekeeper our there willing to answer: I'm new to beekeeping. I got my first bees a month and a half, maybe two months ago. I purchased 2 5-frame nucs and transferred them into 2 10-frame deeps, adding 5 empty frames to each. I added queen excluders and a honey super about a month ago. Today I went through both hives and they have completely filled the empty 5 deep frames that I added with honey and the super have mostly been ignored. ... and it's all honey on those frame, no brood. I'm worried because now that all 10 frames are full that they might want to go look for more space. Should I pull that honey out and replace it with empty frames? Should I add a 2nd deep (I don't really want to)? Should I remove the queen excluder? I'm not sure what to do and would appreciate the thoughts of some of the experienced folks. P.S. I'm OK with splitting the hives, I was just thinking that I would do that when there were 6 or 7 frames of brood, but it's still just five. They literally filled all five frames with honey. I was thinking to maybe wait another week and if any of the frames are fully capped honey (and some were close) then I'd just harvest that and replace with empty frames.
Hi Eric. Your problem is subject to a number of factors. Colonies tend to not want to go through queen excluders to work in a box of all foundation, especially if it is unwaxed plastic. You may try removing the excluder until they have started on that box. If the foundation feels like there is very little or no wax it would help to add wax. For more on this see our video "How to Apply Beeswax to Plastic Foundation" ruclips.net/video/tfMISC9zIaM/видео.html. Depending on the region you are located in, your spring nectar flow may be ending or just getting started. There are also queen excluders out there that are a bit tight for the bees to go through. I've had that happen.
@@bobbinnie9872 Thanks for the response. I checked out the video you linked to and I'll go look for some wax tomorrow when I get off work. So far, the only thing I've done is replace the plastic queen excluders with metal ones. The metal ones seem like they'd be much easier for the bees to go through. Oh and I added some pollen patties on the top of the inner cover to try to draw them up into the super. I also built a couple 1 1/2 inch spacers that I can add between the super and the inner cover to give the bees an upper entrance (with a landing pad) but I haven't put them on yet. I used zero VOC paint, but I'd still like to wait a few days and let the paint smell dissipate before I add that to their home. I don't know anything (yet) about nectar or what effect that has on the bees, but I can say that we've had very little rain this year, so I've been feeding them sugar water almost constantly since I got them.
Uncapped honey can have a high moisture level which can lead to fermentation in most honeys but what determines the rate of crystallization is the percentage of dextrose present. Different types of honey vary greatly in that respect. After our uncapped honey stays in that drying room for a few days it will actually come out with a lower moisture content than the capped honey.
So finally a gal on the crew so I can share... We ladies are better equiped for dealing with those unexpected swarm cells and supercede cells that are all emerging at once. Load afew of those extra virgins in curlers and tuck them under your bra strap (note I said strap). They will be safe and warm as you work down the line and can be directly released into a hive if their queen needs replaced. I suppose you could require the men on the crew to start wearing similar undergarments so we females do not have such an advantage. And when you do I want a heads up on that video release!

I would be interested to know ,since you have been a bee keeper for a considerable amount of time , there is a theory that getting stung over the years, that many bee keepers don't suffer with arthritis, do you suffer , what is your thoughts on the subject Peter Australia.
Hi Peter. I don't have any type of arthritis and have seen others that do have it get better with bee sting therapy. A good book to read on the subject is "Health and the Honeybee" by Charles Mraz.

With 8 vs 10 frames, I assume you have found that the extra wide comb and easier processing outweighs the loss of 2 frames?
The boxes with 8 frame spacers are much more efficient to process and do hold more weight. We purchase the spacers from both Mann Lake and Dadant. We always get the comb drawn out with ten frames and then put in the spacers.@@ericpetersen2033
It's not anything personal. It's because it's harder work than most women would want to do. Syleena has turned out to be quite capable and it's been very nice to have her on crew because she is so sweet. Everyone here loves her and she's a good influence on us.

We have large stands of persimmon here, rain not bad was nectar just knock blooms off. My bees love them , ride blooms to the ground lol

Use the same fuel and lighting technique here. Smoking pellets for cooking food work and smell great.

I have persinnamon in my yard. I see more bumblebees than anything.

The wax that is being taken by your bees is being reused and is not being consumed as food. It wouldn't serve the same purpose as pollen supplement.

I’m always learning something from you Bob. I made a big mistake this year on my first grafts of the year. I waited until the next day to drop in queen cells in my splits and 80% started supercedure cells. It was less than 24 hrs but too long obviously. I noticed about 50% of my grafts hatched but a lot of supercedure cells hatched also. My grafted queen hatched long before supercedure queens but yet didn’t kill those cells. Any thoughts on this?
We struggle with this from time to time also. One batch of nucs will be 95% our queens and the next will be 60%.
The sweet spot seems to be between 6 and 12 hours for introduction and the riper the cell is when it's installed the better.
I do almost the same thing with my smoker but use pine shavings from TSC instead pine needles.

Have you noticed if the vibration from the logging may disturb the bees and not produce as much honey?
I've wondered about that. The bees don't seem any different so maybe they get used to it. It's sure a lot of racket!

I noticed my bees on persimmon trees this year, which was odd. We didn't have any rain for six weeks until a week ago.
My experience with persimmon is that I do well if it doesn't rain.
You got more rain in 2 days than we got in 7 months in Fresno. Very bad this year!
Sorry to hear that. I was born and raised in southern California and remember just how dry it can get.

Nectar isn't always the same. I would say an average of 1.5 water to 1 sugar up to 1.2 to 1.

I got some honey out yesterday and I noticed the earlier honey that was capped is dark and the new nectar is really light color. I don't know what they got on first here but they really packed it up fast and still bringing it in. I'm in north alabama.
The earlier honey could be Tulip Poplar. I believe you have that in your region. It has a red hue to it.

Hi Frances. I bought the blower from our local lawn mower shop. It's a Makita twin 18 volt battery. It works fine for the left over bees.

Yes it can change the taste, especially if used excessively. It's easy to overdo it. However, I wouldn't go so far as to say that any usage is a bad idea. After all, we need to keep the bees under control to get our work done. Moderation is the key.
Hey Bob, I got a really aggressive established hive. I went through it a couple weeks ago, didn’t find a queen or eggs, found some queen cells and older capped brood and maybe a frame of older larvae….mostly nectar (2 deeps, 2 supers) in Southwest Florida. How do you suggest requeening a established hive? I bought a new queen from Ed Coleman and added her by his directions but I’m hesitant to get into the hive because they’re already chasing/stinging my family. I’m on 2 acres. 15 hives are a couple hundred feet away.
Queenless colonies can get extra defensive at times and therefore can be tricky to requeen. The older bees are the most defensive and you now have a box full of older bees. If Ed's queen was excepted they may settle down after her bees start hatching. Perhaps give them some time. To requeen, as long as the colony has been made queenless, introducing an established nuc in a box over a newspaper, with a few thin cuts in it, is the best way to requeen.
Will the queen go through a triangular escape board. Or they just work over a excluder
I would say generally no but I have had queens get stuck above an escape board if she is already there.

A question for any experienced beekeeper our there willing to answer:
I'm new to beekeeping. I got my first bees a month and a half, maybe two months ago. I purchased 2 5-frame nucs and transferred them into 2 10-frame deeps, adding 5 empty frames to each. I added queen excluders and a honey super about a month ago. Today I went through both hives and they have completely filled the empty 5 deep frames that I added with honey and the super have mostly been ignored. ... and it's all honey on those frame, no brood. I'm worried because now that all 10 frames are full that they might want to go look for more space. Should I pull that honey out and replace it with empty frames? Should I add a 2nd deep (I don't really want to)? Should I remove the queen excluder? I'm not sure what to do and would appreciate the thoughts of some of the experienced folks.
P.S. I'm OK with splitting the hives, I was just thinking that I would do that when there were 6 or 7 frames of brood, but it's still just five. They literally filled all five frames with honey. I was thinking to maybe wait another week and if any of the frames are fully capped honey (and some were close) then I'd just harvest that and replace with empty frames.
Hi Eric. Your problem is subject to a number of factors. Colonies tend to not want to go through queen excluders to work in a box of all foundation, especially if it is unwaxed plastic. You may try removing the excluder until they have started on that box. If the foundation feels like there is very little or no wax it would help to add wax. Depending on the region you are located in, your spring nectar flow may be ending or just getting started.
There are also queen excluders out there that are a bit tight for the bees to go through. I've had that happen.

So far, the only thing I've done is replace the plastic queen excluders with metal ones. The metal ones seem like they'd be much easier for the bees to go through. Oh and I added some pollen patties on the top of the inner cover to try to draw them up into the super.
I also built a couple 1 1/2 inch spacers that I can add between the super and the inner cover to give the bees an upper entrance (with a landing pad) but I haven't put them on yet. I used zero VOC paint, but I'd still like to wait a few days and let the paint smell dissipate before I add that to their home.
I don't know anything (yet) about nectar or what effect that has on the bees, but I can say that we've had very little rain this year, so I've been feeding them sugar water almost constantly since I got them.
Isn’t uncapped honey mean that the moisture level is too high and can cause crystallization of the honey
Uncapped honey can have a high moisture level which can lead to fermentation in most honeys but what determines the rate of crystallization is the percentage of dextrose present. Different types of honey vary greatly in that respect. After our uncapped honey stays in that drying room for a few days it will actually come out with a lower moisture content than the capped honey.
So finally a gal on the crew so I can share...
We ladies are better equiped for dealing with those unexpected swarm cells and supercede cells that are all emerging at once. Load afew of those extra virgins in curlers and tuck them under your bra strap (note I said strap). They will be safe and warm as you work down the line and can be directly released into a hive if their queen needs replaced.
I suppose you could require the men on the crew to start wearing similar undergarments so we females do not have such an advantage. And when you do I want a heads up on that video release!

We extract partially uncapped honey all the time but we always run it through our drying room first to make sure the moisture content is low enough.

Although the influence from some of the enzyme activity could be slightly different the moisture is the main difference.

I would be interested to know ,since you have been a bee keeper for a considerable amount of time , there is a theory that getting stung over the years, that many bee keepers don't suffer with arthritis, do you suffer , what is your thoughts on the subject Peter Australia.
Hi Peter. I don't have any type of arthritis and have seen others that do have it get better with bee sting therapy. A good book to read on the subject is "Health and the Honeybee" by Charles Mraz.

It could during a dearth if it was done to a small colony that won't defend the extra entrance. We only do it to the stronger colonies.

Is this 8 frame equipment or are you running 8 frames in your 10 frame supers?
We have 8 frame spacers in 10 frame equipment.
@@bobbinnie9872 That is what it looked like. Do you have a favorite spacer or do you make your own. I am thinking of doing the same next season and want to start preparing equipment over the winter. With 8 vs 10 frames, I assume you have found that the extra wide comb and easier processing outweighs the loss of 2 frames?
The boxes with 8 frame spacers are much more efficient to process and do hold more weight. We purchase the spacers from both Mann Lake and Dadant. We always get the comb drawn out with ten frames and then put in the spacers.@@ericpetersen2033

It's not anything personal. It's because it's harder work than most women would want to do. Syleena has turned out to be quite capable and it's been very nice to have her on crew because she is so sweet. Everyone here loves her and she's a good influence on us.

Here, honey is not considered "ripe" or "mature" if it is above 18.5% moisture.
