I used to work for an archaelogical excavation company and we were not allowed to enter holes that were so deep our head and chest couldnt poke out. The reason being that if the walls collapse the weight will crush the oxygen right out of your lungs before anyone can free you. I don't trust those flimsy panels to hold that weight. Deeply irresponsible even beyond the emotional tone deafness.

The weight of the dirt/walls collapsing is a prime reason number 8,000 they could’ve done what Lux even mentioned of building up a “grave” with walls rather than actually in the ground.
It was so unnecessary given they ended up photoshopping anyway. Also, the other thing is, shooting at an actual cemetery is so incredibly disrespectful to the people buried there and their loved ones. I'm not sure if there is a cultural aspect, but in my culture we are so careful and have a lot of practices around being at burial sites.

The producers have said time and time again that it was poor timing with the sudden death of Kahlen's friend and the graveyard shoot. But the same thing happens again in Cycle 8 with Jael! She has a friend pass away and they did the tasteless """""glamorous""""" murder victim photo shoot. Nobody - not anybody - will ever convince me that they didn't set up this stupid burial shoot VERY purposefully after finding out her friend died. It smells like production, and it's nauseating. I don't think there's a single bit of coincidence in this.
What's incredibly telling is that Tiffany acted to console others, while Tyra acted to dramatize the situation in her favor. It shows that Tiffany is a caring person, with empathy. If anything, Tiff's reaction should have shown her strength, care, and selflessness. And I think she deserves to hear about it.

That shoot was so awful on every level. Kahlen's experience was so bad, but they also give Keenah, who they constantly harped on her weight, gluttony and covered her in food
As someone who works in the death industry, seeing Kahlen being put through the wringer with the challenge just after her dear friend died is absolutely horrid! Emotions are already running high after someone passes away, and when you're in such a toxically competitive environment, it is over the edge terrible. In a society where death and grieving are already so stigmatized, ANTM is making Kahlen feel even more isolated. They should've let her have the appropriate time to mourn.
My dad died last year and the first little bit, I couldn't look at the funeral home where we made arrangements. There's a mortuary I pass frequently that I had to avert my eyes. And I'm a fucking vampire.

I've always thought that Tyra was offended that Tiffany didn't beg to stay or kiss her ass more. Since it was the first double elimination, I really think that she would've let Tiffany stay if any of that had happened just to show how benevolent she is.

Such a good point. I think it’s because she didn’t think she did anything wrong. She justified it in the judging room and later on with the girls by talking about her mom yelling at her meaning she loves her and all that garbage. I hate it a whole lot.
I know the sin was lust, but how did ANYONE think it was acceptable for the photographer to make those noises? Makes me worry about the ones who keep photos of scantily-clad models back for their own, um, personal enjoyment.
@@ArrowOdenn honestly feel like for shoots like this there should be someone on set in a role similar to an intimacy coordinator in film and TV (ICs are involved in all scenes involving nudity/partial nudity, not just ones involving sex), to curb behaviour like this, but also to be an advocate for models so they communicate what makes them comfortable or uncomfortable and set boundaries for these types of shoots.

Jay Manuel has claimed on a podcast that the grave photoshoot was a pure coincidence. But I can't imagine how that could possibly be, given the sadism inherent in the DNA of this show. I guess we can't prove it WASN'T a coincidence. Best case scenario, the producers at least knew that Kahlen had suffered this loss, and salivated over her reaction. Sick.
Kahlen seems to believe it was coincidence and it being seven deadly sins suggests it was as you can only do it with seven girls left. That said Kahlen talked incredibly negatively about the show and Tyra overall and said this experience was scarring and she almost quit the whole show that day.
My guess: they had the 7 Deadly Sins shoot planned for when there were 7 models left, but knew about the friend's death for a while (from vetting phone calls from friends/family) and waited until this shoot to allow her to be informed about it in order to up the drama.
How disrespectful to do this in an actual cemetery ... to the people interred there and to their relatives and friends ....all in the name of a competition based on the fashion industry. Disgusting.

Watching Lux getting second-hand embarrassment and having to stop the video is so relatable. When I was a kid, I'd have to hide behind the sofa if something on the TV got me wound up. My mom would be, "What are you doing back there?"

I sometimes try to frame perfectionism and perfection as this boss in a game, and I'm so focused on trying to beat this boss rather than enjoying the game itself.

Fellow death industry worker here and what they made Kahlen endure was abhorrent. Even being in the industry I am in, it is difficult enough when our own loved ones pass (I have a rule NEVER to work or arrange funerals for people close to me), so I can't imagine being placed into a coffin and lowered down the hatch. To answer your question, Luxeria: A single occupancy grave is 6ft deep. If a dual occupancy, then it is seven feet. US graves for burial are nearly always single occupancy and usually for feet deep. I am yet to here, of any scenario, where a grave would be 8ft deep. That is not to say it never happens. However, given ANTP is a US show, then there was no reason for the grave to be that deep at all. (As you said, there was literally no reason to get a grave involved at all!)

I remember watching this episode when it came out, I thought the concept of this photo shoot was so cool as a young babybat, but I also noticed how wrong it was of them to Kahlen through this shoot. This honestly should be considered a form of torture
It's so deeply unacceptable to put someone learning of the death of a friend on TV like this. I also lost my best friend very suddenly and it definitely hits close to home.
One element I think gets overlooked in how uniquely evil and awful this photo shoot was for Kahlen is that this ish is an incredibly awful idea for literally anyone, ever. I consider myself reasonably sane with no recent death trauma but putting me in a damn coffin and lowering me into an actual grave would sincerely f*** me up. Like months of therapy level. And the show is all like “La la la, fiddle dee dee, what a fun form of psychological warfare to inflict on these young women!”
Ngl the morbidly curious goth in me thinks it's kind of cool and would kind of like to see what that's like, but never in this context. It sounds like a cool experience if done with people you fully trust and feel safe with, and everything is done on your own terms. That's obviously not the case here, and I find it hard to believe anyone of them would've chosen to do it without being pressured to.

There's an episode of American Horror Stories called Tapeworm, you should watch. Its fictional, but exposes the dark side of fashion industry. The model agency boss is definitely supposed to be Janice and has the impression of her down pretty well.
Honestly you can't tell from the photo that they are in a graveyard (or really in a grave). All of this could have been rigged up in a studio and no-one would have been any the wiser. I agree that the "Seven Deadly Sins" concept planned in advance, including the grave... but my goodness, they could have made an exception for Kahlen and shown some humanity. Have her take pictures somewhere else. Graves are usually six feet deep, so I don't know if Jay is simply getting the depth wrong here, or if they deliberately dug a deeper hole (in sacred ground) in order to get the camera focus right.
I know we have some scary stuff going on with all the socials etc etc and the effects that has on our self image but I am really grateful we’re not doing reality TV like this anymore. Crazy how I watched this show and didn’t really clock it but it’s so sad :(

I had to take a public speaking class in undergrad being able to interview someone or be interviewed does take practice and sometimes years to master. lmao I remember one of my roommates in college was big into the "casual blazer" with low-rise jeans and EXCEPTIONALLY POINTY HEELS in ~2004-5ish. I don't think she did the peplum blazer, I think this predated that trend slightly as peplums create the illusion of curves and this was early-2000s when being as thin as possible was the goal. But man, you bringing that up gave me a sudden flashback to going out with her!

This and last episode are the ones that stuck in my head from this season so it's wild that they're back to back. In talking about this Kahlen says as soon as Jay found out he was nothing but sincere and remoresful throughout the shoot (though why the fuck was he not told by production prior?!) and she does seem to believe it was a coincidence (and it being seven deadly sins suggests so since it is dependant on only seven contestants being left). That said she says she almost walked off set and quit the whole show that day and calls the whole experience scarring. She said she is lucky she got wrath as she was so incredibly angry that she had to do the shoot. She talks incredibly negatively about the show overall, saying that Tyra pulls a lot of strings behind the scenes and she knew a lot more of what was going on than the models realised. She says they were all just pawns in Tyra's production and they were made into characters and dehumanised. She also said the show and the modelling industry in general played a role in worsening her PTSD and alcoholism. Edit: Oof watching this now its worse than i remembered. Thise screams while posing didn’t sound angry, she sounded in pain.
The 7 Deadly Sins could also be portrayed very differently when you hear a girl lost someone dear to her. Go to a public bar or casino and pay them, while you keep the costumes. They have a huge budget, so why can't they? I'm a very shy and poor person and was able to pull this off when my photo location was cancelled. I even had permission to use flash, so if you have Tyra's or Jay's charisma, you would be fine.

As someone who works in the death industry, seeing Kahlen being put through the wringer with the challenge just after her dear friend died is absolutely horrid! Emotions are already running high after someone passes away, and when you're in such a toxically competitive environment, it is over the edge terrible. In a society where death and grieving are already so stigmatized, ANTM is making Kahlen feel even more isolated. They should've let her have the appropriate time to mourn.
My dad died last year and the first little bit, I couldn't look at the funeral home where we made arrangements. There's a mortuary I pass frequently that I had to avert my eyes. And I'm a fucking vampire.

The fact that tyra says "you faced adversity and were able to get passed it" tells me production knew in advance enough to change how this shoot was done, but CHOSE not to, to test Kahlen. Dis-gust-tang! Using someone's grief for monetary gain.

Such a good point. I think it’s because she didn’t think she did anything wrong. She justified it in the judging room and later on with the girls by talking about her mom yelling at her meaning she loves her and all that garbage. I hate it a whole lot.
I know the sin was lust, but how did ANYONE think it was acceptable for the photographer to make those noises? Makes me worry about the ones who keep photos of scantily-clad models back for their own, um, personal enjoyment.
@@ArrowOdenn honestly feel like for shoots like this there should be someone on set in a role similar to an intimacy coordinator in film and TV (ICs are involved in all scenes involving nudity/partial nudity, not just ones involving sex), to curb behaviour like this, but also to be an advocate for models so they communicate what makes them comfortable or uncomfortable and set boundaries for these types of shoots.
That made me so uncomfortable. He should be on a list.

Oh, Tyra. If your mother yelled at you like that, it's not because she loved you. It was because she saw her meal ticket stepping out of line. That was abuse, and you certainly didn't break that cycle of abuse. It's wild that this series went on as long as it did with this behavior, and it's also wild that she felt she was so in the right that she allowed it to be added in to the edit of a second episode. Oof.
Jay Manuel has claimed on a podcast that the grave photoshoot was a pure coincidence. But I can't imagine how that could possibly be, given the sadism inherent in the DNA of this show. I guess we can't prove it WASN'T a coincidence. Best case scenario, the producers at least knew that Kahlen had suffered this loss, and salivated over her reaction. Sick.

Kahlen seems to believe it was coincidence and it being seven deadly sins suggests it was as you can only do it with seven girls left. That said Kahlen talked incredibly negatively about the show and Tyra overall and said this experience was scarring and she almost quit the whole show that day.
I don't trust anything he says, he's been trying to fly under the radar of criticism for years.
My guess: they had the 7 Deadly Sins shoot planned for when there were 7 models left, but knew about the friend's death for a while (from vetting phone calls from friends/family) and waited until this shoot to allow her to be informed about it in order to up the drama.
How disrespectful to do this in an actual cemetery ... to the people interred there and to their relatives and friends ....all in the name of a competition based on the fashion industry. Disgusting.

I sometimes try to frame perfectionism and perfection as this boss in a game, and I'm so focused on trying to beat this boss rather than enjoying the game itself.

Fellow death industry worker here and what they made Kahlen endure was abhorrent. Even being in the industry I am in, it is difficult enough when our own loved ones pass (I have a rule NEVER to work or arrange funerals for people close to me), so I can't imagine being placed into a coffin and lowered down the hatch.
To answer your question, Luxeria: A single occupancy grave is 6ft deep. If a dual occupancy, then it is seven feet.
US graves for burial are nearly always single occupancy and usually for feet deep.
I am yet to here, of any scenario, where a grave would be 8ft deep. That is not to say it never happens. However, given ANTP is a US show, then there was no reason for the grave to be that deep at all. (As you said, there was literally no reason to get a grave involved at all!)
Tyra is full of it! They were already eliminated!!!! Tyra got her panties in a bunch and called them Back over!!! Just to yell at Tiffany for no reason! She said foul ish to Tiffany when it first aired, but it's been cut since. So, for Tyra to act like she threw away her chance and to gaslight the other girls into thinking it too is despicable.

It's so deeply unacceptable to put someone learning of the death of a friend on TV like this. I also lost my best friend very suddenly and it definitely hits close to home.
One element I think gets overlooked in how uniquely evil and awful this photo shoot was for Kahlen is that this ish is an incredibly awful idea for literally anyone, ever. I consider myself reasonably sane with no recent death trauma but putting me in a damn coffin and lowering me into an actual grave would sincerely f*** me up. Like months of therapy level. And the show is all like “La la la, fiddle dee dee, what a fun form of psychological warfare to inflict on these young women!”
Jay saying he hopes no one was afraid of tight spaces makes me think they were hoping one of the girls was claustrophobic
Ngl the morbidly curious goth in me thinks it's kind of cool and would kind of like to see what that's like, but never in this context. It sounds like a cool experience if done with people you fully trust and feel safe with, and everything is done on your own terms. That's obviously not the case here, and I find it hard to believe anyone of them would've chosen to do it without being pressured to.
So - conspiracy time. I can see that they always planned to do a seven deadly sins shoot for the last 7 girls, but this week was meant to have 8 girls if they hadn't eliminated 2 last week. What if they found out about Kahlen's friend and then decided to do the double elimination to get to this shoot and all of the drama it would cause? I wouldn't put it past them.

You know what I've always found weird with this episode. Apparently the double elimination last episode was unplanned, and yet they roll into this episode with a seven deadly sins theme, so what would have happened if they'd not eliminated two people last time? Hey Rebecca, we've run out of deadly sins so your sin shall be 'brow lift' Or did they ditch a whole photoshoot and skip ahead to this one, because I doubt they would plan a shoot and pay for all the stuff only to dump it.
What in the world were they thinking!, having a shoot in a actual grave, you can easily do this in a studio and still get great results this was deliberate due to that poor girl's grief.
There's an episode of American Horror Stories called Tapeworm, you should watch. Its fictional, but exposes the dark side of fashion industry. The model agency boss is definitely supposed to be Janice and has the impression of her down pretty well.

Honestly you can't tell from the photo that they are in a graveyard (or really in a grave). All of this could have been rigged up in a studio and no-one would have been any the wiser. I agree that the "Seven Deadly Sins" concept planned in advance, including the grave... but my goodness, they could have made an exception for Kahlen and shown some humanity. Have her take pictures somewhere else. Graves are usually six feet deep, so I don't know if Jay is simply getting the depth wrong here, or if they deliberately dug a deeper hole (in sacred ground) in order to get the camera focus right.

I could swear that it came out that, on one of the early seasons, the girls weren’t supposed to talk to each other off camera.
I had to take a public speaking class in undergrad being able to interview someone or be interviewed does take practice and sometimes years to master. It’s not just like one random day a man becomes this crazy great speaker and interviewer. I give everyone grace especially since the woman are so young ❤
I find it so crazy how they keep using drag queen as an insult on this show to describe the models' photos, I guess the early 2000s were still just like "man in a dress hurhurhur"

lmao I remember one of my roommates in college was big into the "casual blazer" with low-rise jeans and EXCEPTIONALLY POINTY HEELS in ~2004-5ish. I don't think she did the peplum blazer, I think this predated that trend slightly as peplums create the illusion of curves and this was early-2000s when being as thin as possible was the goal. But man, you bringing that up gave me a sudden flashback to going out with her!
When this video was posted, I told myself that I'd wash my hair tomorrow. We'll, it's three days after tomorrow and I have yet to wash my hair, but also have a billion other things to take care of

This and last episode are the ones that stuck in my head from this season so it's wild that they're back to back.
In talking about this Kahlen says as soon as Jay found out he was nothing but sincere and remoresful throughout the shoot (though why the fuck was he not told by production prior?!) and she does seem to believe it was a coincidence (and it being seven deadly sins suggests so since it is dependant on only seven contestants being left). That said she says she almost walked off set and quit the whole show that day and calls the whole experience scarring. She said she is lucky she got wrath as she was so incredibly angry that she had to do the shoot.
She talks incredibly negatively about the show overall, saying that Tyra pulls a lot of strings behind the scenes and she knew a lot more of what was going on than the models realised. She says they were all just pawns in Tyra's production and they were made into characters and dehumanised. She also said the show and the modelling industry in general played a role in worsening her PTSD and alcoholism.
Edit: Oof watching this now its worse than i remembered. Thise screams while posing didn’t sound angry, she sounded in pain.

The 7 Deadly Sins could also be portrayed very differently when you hear a girl lost someone dear to her. Go to a public bar or casino and pay them, while you keep the costumes. They have a huge budget, so why can't they? I'm a very shy and poor person and was able to pull this off when my photo location was cancelled. I even had permission to use flash, so if you have Tyra's or Jay's charisma, you would be fine.
This was the best hour of my day. I want to watch every episode with you.
