Yep! I knew Emerson back in the when he and Jeff played local gigs in LA - he was married to my friend/co-worker who the song is about. Such a great song! :-D
I'd love to hear them check out Toad the Wet Sprocket! Not just 'Walk on the Ocean', 'All I Want', and 'Is It for Me?' which are awesome, but also some of their later stuff like "New Constellation', 'The Moment', and 'California Wasted'... I don't listen to a lot of TtWS, but they really are a great band :)

I graduated from high school in 95. I love the music that was my teenage years! And all these suggestions for follow up artists and songs are all fire. What a great time to be alive! ❤
Another 90s alternative band that you guys should REALLY give a listen to is Toad the Wet Sprocket. They had the better part of a dozen hits in the 90s.
"Counting Blue Cars (Tell Me Your Thoughts on God)" is a song by American alternative rock band Dishwalla from their 1995 A&M Records album Pet Your Friends. It is their only hit song, peaking at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topping the same magazine's Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1996. It received two ASCAP awards (1997 and 1998) as the most-played song of the year on radio in the United States. It got a lot of airplay on Australian radio, especially TripleM in Sydney. Cool song.
❤I loved Dishwalla. Yep.....they were an Alt Rock Band from Santa Barbara California. JR Richards has a fantastic voice. This is their most popular song. I did see them live at The Santa Barbara Bowl......great live band.
Speaking of 90's bands with strange names can you please check out Toad The Wet Sprocket? All I want, Come Down, Fall Down or Walk on the Ocean to start with 😃
I'm excited you added Dishwalla to your repertoire of reactions! Dishwalla's Pet Your Friends is one my favorite albums. You should check out "Moisture", "Give', and "Charlie Brown's Parents"
Vertical Horizon is another Alt-Rock band from the 90s that don't get much love these days. Although it wasn't their best known, I like their song 'I'm Still Here.'
This song was played on heavy rotation by almost every radio station plus at doctors offices, grocery stores, etc. it's crazy that so much time has passed by now that some people have never heard it.
Finally! I have been asking for years from every reactor I subscribe to to do this group, they have some really good songs in their catalog! You’re the first ones to finally listen to them.
Probably one if not of best aternative rock song ever.... really amazing song writing and production here... For the way... nice to see black guys rocking alternative rock... keeep going
As far as God in songs, you might be interested in reacting to British rock band XTC and their song, Dear God. Along with some of their others songs like, Generals and Majors, Making Plans for Nigel, Ballad of Peter Pumpkin Head, Senses Working Overtime, Mayor of Simpleton, King For A Day
XTC - Dear God is a great one. Also, Genesis - Jesus He Knows Me is fun (but the video labeled “official” on RUclips is edited and not as it aired on MTV back in the day. The full 5-minute video must be watched to fully experience it).
When this song was first on the radio, many people including myself thought this song was about two brothers (one being much older) or a young father and his son going for a walk and the child has terminal cancer or something similar. The line about on my way to see her, statement that it is happening very soon, getting colder, picking up the pace....
One thing I love about your channel is that you give me a fresh perspective on the music I've known and loved forever. This song is a staple on '90s radio stations. I haven't given it much thought in years, but watching you listen to it for the first time also makes it seem fresh and new to me. Thanks for doing what you do. ❤
I like how the lyrics say, "Tell me all your thoughts on God Cause I'm on my way to see her". I agree with Mike, Tonic's If You Could Only See is a fantastic song from 1996.
By far one of my favorite 99's alternative rock songs. Growing up as a young kid in the 80s my siblings and I would sit in our driveway and just talking about things in life while we Counted Cars. I usually picked red. When I heard this song for the first time, it took me back to those days of being a young naive child and I have listened to it at least once a week since this song was released.
I can't say it's nostalgia or the music and lyrics, but I miss this type of music So Much!! So emotional, without being emo. It rocks and isn't like a confession from a diary or about being hurt in an old relationship. Those aren't bad, but there's so much more that could be said.
Look up dishwalla counting blue cars acoustic. There's a 10 minute version of this song thats split and they did it in a radio studio in Boston and its the best version. Trust me
OMG!! This is one of my favorites from the '90s. I think they may have been a one-hit wonder but now I want to listen to their CD. Thanks for the review.
Dishwalla is one of my favorite bands of all time. Way too underrated. They have so many great songs. I haven’t heard much from them with the lead singer they have now. J.R. Richards left the band in 2005. I just love his voice.
I love Dishwalla! Very underrated band from that era, glad you got to them. You definitely need to check out “Charlie Brown’s Parents” next, which is my favorite song of theirs and got some play on rock radio in ‘96; it has a pretty good music video too.
One of my favorite songs of the 90's. This band unfortunately never made it big but were really good. The name is Hindi term for providing satellite to the neighborhood. JR RIchardson is the lead singer and said the song is about a conversation with himself about deep topics about God and said it was a conversation with himself because he was curious about it and was not driven in any specific direction in that regard.
Kula Shaker's "Tattva" is a phenomenal 90s song. "Radiation Vibe" is the song that made Fountains of Wayne famous, before "Stacy's Mom." Give it a shot. School of Fish had a song in the early 90s called "3 Strange Days" that's just really really fun. Lead singer of that band died in the pandemic. There's a whole lot of stuff from the 90s. You've barely scratched the surface. "Super Bon Bon" is such a jam... you'll love it.
Great song by Dishwalla. I believe they were a one hit wonder, but what a hit! Also another popular 90's alternative rock band that I dont think you checked out yet is Collective Soul and their smash hit : Shine!!!
Hi, Yes Dishwalla had a few very nice tunes. Lead Singer is J. R. Richards. Check out the song "Give" to see him showcase his voice. Beautiful song. Best Regards.
I love these guys! We ALWAYS hung out when they came to Portland. Pretty Babies is another great track by them and Miss Emma Peel is a good one too. They are some of the best guys, originally out of Santa Barbara ❤
I went to a show in in a bar in DC in 1996. Dishwalla opened up for the Goo Goo Dolls. They totally crushed it and people were so disapointed with the Goo Goo Dolls.
Speaking of 90's bands you should do more Collective Soul. You've only done two so far (Shine and December) and it's been awhile so they're due. I suggest The World I Know. Great song and great video too!
I guess there's a coarse language issue with Semi-Charmed Life, but at least go with Jumper if that's the case. Those are definitely the two infection vectors for them
I remember when this came out! A few others from the 90's I loved were Inbetweener by Sleeper, Devil's Diary by The Caulfields and Here and Now by Letters to Cleo.
Walla is a sound effect name for people or crowds talking in the background. Dish walla is the sounds of plates and utensils being used like in a restaurant or family eating dinner.
You are correct: Wallah, or -walla or -wala or -vala (-swali fem.), is a suffix used in a number of Indo-Aryan languages, like Hindi/Urdu, Gujarati, Bengali or Marathi. It forms an adjectival compound from a noun or an agent noun from a verb.[2] For example, it may indicate a person involved in some kind of activity, where they come from or what they wear (Topiwala) ie: Dishwalla, satellite TV installer, from "dish" for parabolic antenna
So many people talk about the 70s and how great the music was ,and they are right i grew up then but i really think the 90s rivals the 70s with all of the creative talented bands. the 90s were a fantastic decade for music
Regarding the name of the band, this is what I remember hearing about it when their songs started getting played on the radio. Someone said that in India "Walla" means kind of biggest or best at something (like car wallaby's would have the best car), and they were referring to someone who had the biggest and best satellite dish to watch TV. I have no idea if this story is true, but this is what I heard on the radio some three decades ago!
I missed this video when you posted it, somehow! So fun : ) The drive of the song reminds me of Everclear, another great 1990's band - check out "Santa Monica", "I Will Buy You a New Life" or a heavier subject song "Father of Mine". The first 2 songs I really identified with, my (now) husband and I were young and working to make ends meet, but had fun!
I bought the album just based on this song and was not disappointed. It was so good I went out and bought the subsequent album. Sadly, radio never picked up any of their other songs. Amber would LOVE Pretty Babies"...
Like others have mentioned, this is post grunge alternative. It's funny because it's "alternative rock", but it was as mainstream as it could be! Alternative music ruled the entire 90s, from beginning to end. Bands like Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, Tonic, Third Eye Blind, The Sundays, and probably my favorite of them all, Toad The Wet Sprocket, among many many others. But this specific style was from '95 forward, after grunge had effectively died off. Goo Goo Dolls was probably the most successful of them commercially speaking, but a lot of one hit wonders like Tonic had huge hits during that time. I actually owned a record shop during this time, and my two main specialties were imported dance music and alternative music. I use to carry a lot of records (CDs) that other stores just didn't. Great times!!!!
One of my favorite 90's alternative groups no lie plus his name is J.R. Richards he'd lefted the group an decade ago still doing solos but an very underrated vocalist. P.S. check out Saigon Kick - All I Want another 90's act.
Tonic "If You Could Only See" is from right around the same time and another mid-90's banger.
Tonic was such an underrated band ...

I'd love to hear them check out Toad the Wet Sprocket! Yeah, I'm kinda surprised they haven't done them yet. They're insanely good!
They are also from Santa Barbara just like Dishwalla.
Dishwalla was part of a sub-genre that included bands like Spacehog, Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, etc...grunge-pop if you will.
Love the Gins, but they weren't grunge pop. They were power pop. More in the style of Tom Petty than Nirvana.
And they all sucked.
All bands that I ignored in the 90s. Now that I recently discovered them, they're some of my favorites.
Post Grunge. I’d throw Toadies, Tonic, Gin Blossoms, etc in there

Awesome song. 90's alternative was amazing in those days
This is crazy! The chorus randomly popped into my head a few days ago despite having not listened to this song in years, and here we are!
