it's actually called the rule of odds! any odd number of items together looks better than evens, however, 9 is the limit! Everything more than 9 gets overwhelming. It's an art rule, and you are totally right!

Ikr, I do that with everything in my art but also when decorating my room and now also in ACNH
Rule of thirds is a photography technique based on a grid system of positioning items in the frame!
Sometimes I worry that my island isn’t ~aesthetic~ enough. But then I remember that all islands are valid and you should design pertaining to your own personal aesthetic! I love the water thing tho. I made a massive lake in front of my house

Not sure if this was said before, but my mom (who was an artist) explained why decorating in odd numbers is more appealing this way - Nature isn't balanced. Nature, which is programmed into our genetic makeup to be soothing, is random. Even and balanced is man made. It has its place, as you said, but it's more formal. Comfort comes when we take our cues from nature.

ik i just got a switch not long ago and the game but it’s taking me for ever to get villagers and to be able to build stuff :/
i loved the start of the game, don’t put pressure on yourself to have an amazing looking island because it takes so much time and effort, just enjoy the game as you go

I think the best thing is to not hesitate when designing/terraforming your island. Mistakes/bad designs are easily undoable if you don't like them and it helps you learn and figure out what your preferences are while helping build your creativity :)

Like the story of the pottery class. Those who were graded on quantity made the most pots and those who were graded on quality spent the whole class planning how to make one perfect pot. Guess who's pots were better? Even bad experience is still experience and still a chance to learn 😁

Another good tip is to not just stick to the first level, it’s good to decorate on top of the cliffs as well! as in not just use flowers, it looks pretty but if you add some items it will look even better! I hope this helps someone that needs it

I also feel the NEED for more of the sideways pirate barrels. I hardly ever see Gullivarr though!

Try using Nookazon to trade for the pirate barrels! It can save you a lot of time and trouble!

Never thought of stunting tree growth or that you could even do that. Great tip! I've been having a hard time figuring out what to do with the rest of my island so looks like I'll be adding in some water here and there lol I will definitely be using some of these tips.
Yes!!! Definitely add lots of little streams and waterfalls. You can always take them out later if you come up with an idea for an area :)
Plus, Isabelle only counts fully grown trees, bushes, bamboo, and stumps in her island evals. So if you want extra trees because you want a more natural-looking island, having partially grown trees will help you achieve that look without Isabelle telling you that residents have complained about having too many trees.
I think I might've been accidentally stunting my fruit trees because they haven't grown much or at all since planting them
I think working with forced perspective is a good tip too! ❤️ like layering trees on hills & then putting objects up high/etc to create a good landscape

For the first tip it doesn’t have to be just fruits. Trees won’t grow correctly if there are items planted near it so it could be flowers or bushes other trees etc. it doesn’t need to be just fruit. I studied interior design and I currently am an art major. Big things that can impact your island design aesthetic is lighting, and how certain lightings and weather can affect the look of your island, if you want your island to look darker use less lighting or space out how much lighting you have in a specific area and vice versa. Perspective is huge, and utilizing these angles to your affect can be really powerful. Overlapping can be important but create a balance between your positive and negative space (areas you have filled vs areas that are empty) really play around with it. And different objects that you wouldn’t normally use. Like a stone arch to create a tunnel! Hope this helps
I wish they added crates to the game. It’d be a great mix to have both crates and barrels. Sort of like an abandoned pirate bay area or abandoned mine or ancient excavation site. The item you get from Flick is nice, but I want something more square, and also with a varied version where you can place it diagonally. Similar to the barrels that stand and those that lay on the ground.
I would love to add more waterfalls but the noise is driving me nuts! They are so loud I can't stand it 😂😂😂

The central rule that affects everything in your island, that once you start paying attention to it your ability to decorate will rapidly improve, is: diversity. Diversity in EVERY aspect.
Diversity in colours. Diversity in shapes. Diversity in textures. Diversity in patterns. Diversity in depth, on all 3 axes. Avoid uniformity! Nature is diverse and random, so we like diverse and random (obviously, "random" while respecting basic things such as colour theory).
Curving and twisting paths are more pleasing than straight ones. Flower patches filled with multiple colours are more pleasing than patches of just one type and colour. Areas with a mix of tall and short furniture look more pleasing than areas with furniture of a similar height. Etc etc.

Thank you for this! I love your videos, and your island is so peaceful and lovely. I get so frustrated with the outdoor spaces on my island, I'm so impressed with designers like you who seem to naturally have a talent for it. My island is mostly still overrun with flowers (hybridizing run amuck!), and all of my villagers' houses are still stuck on the beach waiting to be placed. These tips are fantastic and will be very helpful when I can face working on it again. :) I'm saving this one to watch again (and again and again, probably...) :)

Tree growth... huh! I do it all the time in HHD, but I never thought about applying it to my own island. I should totally throw some hay beds and backwards jack-o-lanterns into my pumpkin patch too, while I'm at it!

AS A TIP id say limiting the colours in the area youre working on in general is a good thing, keeping to a main palette or even having the colour focus of the zone be one colour (like, say, red for an apple orchid)

I've was given the ACNH game as a gift almost a year ago for my birthday and have been playing it. And I stuggle decorating. I've terraformed and added waterfalls but then I change my mind and tear them down. Some of the villagers houses have a view of the beach and I'm thinking about moving some of those houses away from the airport area to have a more inviting feel to the island. Sidenote: I'm from P.R. and coming out of the main airport is very busy and traffic is horrible but once you're out of that area people can start enjoying the scenery as they drive. 😊

I saw someone say it was the rule of odds... Hmm that's cool. I learned rule of thirds..from an art degree students perspective, in art terms, putting a composition into an area of three divisions of horizonal and vertical, is pretty much what you said, pleasing to look at. I like to think of it as Renaissance statues versus old Egyptian statues. Egyptian statues were so stiff and straight while Renaissance statues were usually an arm out, adjacent hip out and the knee as well on the same side with the arm out. More pleasing and just realistic.

I just unlocked the island designer app and had no freaking idea what to do with it lol
So I JUST unlocked 3 stars got K.K. Slider to come for the concert yesterday. So while I'm doing some little things here and there for decorating I just now unlocked terraforming. And I'm still doing a lot of just like money making activities to increase and pay off my house and whatever. I only have 7 villagers and 2 are AWFUL. I watch these videos to get inspired but I just get overwhelmed by how far away I am from it. Like I haven't even gotten the DIYs for a lot of this stuff, or come across the items. I'm still having a ton of fun though, and having just started I always have a ton of stuff to do whenever I play. I just cannot wait until I get to this type of point, whatever style u go for. At this point I'm doing a "if I find it and it looks OK and it'll get my star rating up then it stays where it is"-core.

Thank you so much! It’s actually called the sideways pirate barrel and is a Gullivarrr item. There is an upright pirate barrel too. I just turned them both so you can’t see the pirate logo on the front :)

it's a game changer!!!
One thing I wish that you could pull up your entire storage when you’re designing so that you can see everything your working with because with the 🍁 in your inventory you can’t see what the item looks like and it can be confusing. Whereas if your looking into your storage you can see every item. it would be similar happy home designer when you decorate a villagers house or yard.

My island was literally so flat until I started watching you 3 days ago. Been non stop updating my island!! Also out of curiosity, how many in game hours do you have?? I have 380 and it still looks like I've only been playing for much much less XD
