As another Speech- Language Pathologist, I want to add to the discussion here. As many of the other slp’s have shared /r/ is one of the most difficult sounds and one of the latest developing sounds. At the age of 7-8 it is a developing sound and having difficulty with it is age appropriate. Some kids learn it younger and that is great! I work with k-12 and I have worked with many older students 6-12th grade that have difficulty with /r/. Anyone can have any trouble at any age with articulation!
Yeah, I know a bit about speech impediments because some of my siblings are autistic and I know they can sometimes go hand in hand and I wanted someone else to bring this up. It doesn’t always have to do with age, and sometimes people get speech therapy and still have a lisp. It’s just how it is sometimes.
My bf is 23 and just now discovered the main reason for his R and L speech impediment is his lower jaw. He never once actually
Said R correctly and relied on his lips instead of curling his tongue and never once utilized his lower jaw fully and was always rushing, which caused the R and L to never sound clear. Just takes practice cuz now he can do it really well
I'm about to turn 30, can't pronounce r in a Spanish speaking country. It's hard. I need my tongue tie released.
yes!! Thank you for this, although Kevin was cracking me up, it emphasized the many unknowns regarding development to the general public. It's important to inform!

@@nataliepa2252my Rs only got really good at that age too 😂
You can clearly tell they don't know anything about kids. A lot of kids definitely can't pronounce "r"s at 7. A five year old can tell you how deep water is. Most young kids can't tell you what grade their siblings are in. I was shocked when they said the guest lady was a teacher cuz she was totally off. I'm a first grade teacher and she was saying a lot of wrong things and they just believed whatever she said. I still enjoyed this video but a lot of things made me feel some type of way.

As someone who’s just graduated with a masters in Speech-Language Pathology, some kids don’t develop the “r” sound until the age of 8! I’ve definitely worked with children who were 7 or 8 years old who had trouble pronouncing the “r” sound.
I know they got hung up on it during this video about how it might not be normal, but based on research, it’s totally reasonable and developmentally appropriate! The only issue is that a speech therapist would have likely worked on the “r” sound a lot earlier considering it’s in the child’s name. Just some food for thought :)
Yeah I was one of those kids. I couldn’t pronounce “or” sounds (my name included) until I was about 10 and struggled with “er/ir” sounds until I was 13
i have a 7 y/o cousin who can't pronounce his Rs because of his anatomy!!
he's been seeing a speech therapist for over two years now, he was almost unintelligible for us at first and so far he's improved like 95%, but the Rs still don't come out because of his inner mouth shape and the roof of his mouth being higher than normal
but even for kids with normal anatomy, i feel like it's perfectly normal to still have some minor struggles with the Rs at that age? lol
I can't pronounce my r's and I'm 12 but I'm working on it.
That's interesting. Do you know why the r is a common problem?
I’m in graduate school doing my masters right now for SLP and I was thinking the same thing!! Thank you for sharing 😄

I really appreciate Denny mentioning that adults can have speech impediments. I’m 19 and although I did speech therapy in kindergarten I still have rhotacism and struggle with it daily. I wish more people were educated on and had more awareness of rhotacism lasting through adulthood!
Same!! I’m 19 and have a speech impediment. And people always get so angry at me for not pronouncing words right, like I’m choosing to be like this. I hate uneducated people. Adults need more awareness!

I had that exact speech impediment until I was about seven or eight, could not say Rs for the life of me. It took a lot of speech classes to get rid of it.
Denny and aaron are alwaaaayysss sooo considerate i love them 💗💗
I’m 22 and can’t pronounce my Rs correctly at all. Did 5 years of speech therapy for my Rs and it never helped. My family makes fun of me bc I’ll say burger but it sounds like buwguh or booger depending on how fast I say it.
I'm just saying you can't compare intelligence between kids as the deciding factor. Because some kids are just way ahead than others.

Their first mistake was saying they’re four. Robin sounds 8 at least.
I’m convinced zainab has only met one child and it’s her nephew 😭 actually none of y’all seem like y’all know any kids AT ALL
I think they mention twice she was a teacher though.
I think the problem is that they measure it in comparison to some singular kid they each know. But in that stage of development kids skills are extremely varied. When I worked babysitting a church group kids I had one 6 year old couldn’t do divisions above 10 and the other that could name big part of geologic time scale in order. At this stage the knowledge and skills are just so different between them it’s hard to compare.
There are all sort of kids. My oldest two are math wizzards and definitively knew basic math by the time they were 4-5.
The 2nd youngest is the best at sports (for his age).
And the youngest knows very well how to read and write (caps) at 3.5 yo.

As a speech therapist, I’ve worked with 3-5th graders and adolescents who are working on articulating their /r/ sounds. The /r/ is the more difficult sound to produce and it’s acquired at a later age. Also, we need to be more neurodiverse, especially if we’re speaking to children. I can have a kid who’s excelling in math, but we’re working on blending sounds or they have a separate reading teacher. Children are very aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
Love your videos and yall are so funny, but this one made my head tilt. Just putting my two cents in for next time :)
Exactly if you struggle with speech and there’s no intervention you can struggle with sounds at ANY age.
GET OUT🗣🗣
I actually went to speech therapy from 3 grade to middle school because of my r and L sounds so it actually possible for kids to have speech problems at this age.

Spelling and math are two different things. As a teacher you can have a student who can do math but not read. Also cool isn’t a word you can just sound out. You need to know other spelling patterns. We teach the ‘oo’ spelling patterns in second grade.
yeah that woman was kinda being rude the whole video which is what i didn’t get
I’m a teacher too and I was thinking the same. They’re completely different skills. Plus, cool seems like a simple word but it can be tricky for a 5 year old because of the vowel blend in the middle, which is often not taught until a little later on. Just learning that awareness of sounds takes time!

True I was being taken me back to my speech therapy teacher in school that I didnt like I went to her for 7 years (ages 5-12) and my R's never got better lucky my mom ended up pulling me out of speech therapy in 6th grade and thank the lord for that I couldn't put up with her for 1 more day. I always made her aggravated by not saying my R's right I worked with her for 7 years, 5 days a week, for 45 min sessions. I remember she was always frustrated with me and then all of a sudden another girl entered our sessions who had trouble with her S and we always started with me and after not getting my R's right she would move on to the other girl and wouldn't come back to me the rest of the session 🙅♀
Man how I would like to meet her now after 17 years and show her what her work with me didnt do since I still cant say my R's right 😂
nobody noticed how at 20:16 she answered to her name joy LMFAO
Ofc they did. Thats why they're laughing
She did many times, she even forgot her fake name once
@@Ropesz07to be fair she old
The kid has a solid future, dividing problems really fast. Keep it up kid!
Someone needs to apologize to Beau for thinking he can't do division. 😂
They didn’t give Grayson enough credit imo
25:41 The senior citizens are taking over the show
Lol
“Your mom thinks my lisp is cute” that made me laugh so hard 🤣🤣
them complaining about "grayson" not able to pronounce his r's correctly killed me inside bc i couldn't pronounce them until the 4th grade dawg. amazing video anyways, glad to see joy again!
Y’all- speech impairments can persist for YEARS. It is very common for my 7 year olds to still have problems with their r’s. Sincerely, your neighborhood speech-language pathologist ❤️
My little brother has a speech impediment at around that age! We all have bad tongue ties so that definitely doesn't help haha
When you say years can it be 29 years? because thats how old I am and still cant say my R's properly :(
That’s what I was saying I hated that because I could not say my S’s K’s R’s and struggled with my sister Valerie’s name for some reason i always said “vowlewy” i pronounced my S’s with a lisp that was corrected fast my K’s with a T and that was corrected fast (although i did call my sister Kailee ‘Tailee’ for a while) but my R sound didnt click for me until i was like 11-12. I used to get bullied by people saying that I sounded like Roger rabbit or people saying that I sound like a little baby that does not know how to talk.

Kevin questioning on why a 7 year old would still have a speech impediment when he literally has a friend, two seats over, who is way way older than 7 years old with lisp 😂😂😂
Number 4 getting startled by number 1's "Chips" at 11:02 😭😭😭
beau is the cutest thing ever 😭😭😭
Beau is actually handsome in French ahah! I also think he is french because he spelled blue: “bleu” that is actually blue in French
ikr he is so adorable
You should do guess 4 divorces couple and figure out who’s the married couple. 😂❤❤ (love this video, glad Joy came back 😭😭)

That sounds messy
“Spell Blue”
Beau - “B…L…E…U”
Herm - “Well at least he spelled it the french way”
Love the show! Keep it up
15:21 he has a sister in the 7th grade, it makes sense for him to know this since she and their parents most likely work out her homework in their family room where he’s around.
Ah THAT makes sense. I was wondering for a second cuz I know at 6 in first grade I think, they're learning to read. No way they're learning multiplication and division at the same time they're still learning to read.
