As a speech pathologist. It’s normal for seven year olds not to have R sounds. Even when some 4 or 5 year olds do. It’s not considered a delay or disorder until they are past 8…..

@Panda.Bo.Bandaa so the only time that should ever happen is if they have other errors and we put that on there so that we can justify keeping them in speech therapy past their age-appropriate sounds. Because it’s easier to keep someone in speech than to dismiss them and then pick them up in two years. But that is the only time you should see that.
@Jay-5881I know how it goes. I’m a speech path too, primarily for preschool now, but I would never put an /r/ in a preschool IEP to justify them keeping it. Their other sounds or their language deficits justify it or they don’t need the IEP. There’s never a time an /r/ error alone will impact a preschooler’s education. Keeping them in speech for another 3 years just in case they have an /r/ error down the road, not even knowing if it’ll have an adverse effect warranting retesting, is fraud and unethical.
@Panda.Bo.Bandaait may differ state to state. Where I am, we put ALL error sounds in and then if they get all but the R out, we work on the R even if it is “early”. But we don’t pick up a young student for R until 8-9.
Edit: I work elementary mostly in two different states.

My cousin is 13 and has a speech impediment where he can't say his r's. So crazy to judge a kid for being 7 and having one, especially if she's a teacher. Believing that all kids grow at an exact rate and judging anyone different is a horrible, horrible way to view children as an educator. Thanks to Denny for immediately calling that out

Way way way too many teachers should not be teaching due to their lack of understanding of child development. Teachers simply do not care about students and have a blanket idea of what a child should be at based off age. Like the math thing. I already knew my divisions and multiplication at 5 years old in the state I was from and then I moved and all the kids there were BEHIND what I was already taught by 2 years. But I was deemed "ret@rded". My teachers literally robbed me of an education and made me feel stupid for how I talk.

You can clearly tell they don't know anything about kids. A lot of kids definitely can't pronounce "r"s at 7. A five year old can tell you how deep water is. Most young kids can't tell you what grade their siblings are in. I was shocked when they said the guest lady was a teacher cuz she was totally off. I'm a first grade teacher and she was saying a lot of wrong things and they just believed whatever she said. I still enjoyed this video but a lot of things made me feel some type of way.

However, there is Rhotacism which is the difficulty to pronounce the letter R in words.

Spelling and math are two different things. As a teacher you can have a student who can do math but not read. Also cool isn’t a word you can just sound out. You need to know other spelling patterns. We teach the ‘oo’ spelling patterns in second grade.

I’m a teacher too and I was thinking the same. They’re completely different skills. Plus, cool seems like a simple word but it can be tricky for a 5 year old because of the vowel blend in the middle, which is often not taught until a little later on. Just learning that awareness of sounds takes time!

I really appreciate Denny mentioning that adults can have speech impediments. I’m 19 and although I did speech therapy in kindergarten I still have rhotacism and struggle with it daily. I wish more people were educated on and had more awareness of rhotacism lasting through adulthood!
Same!! I’m 19 and have a speech impediment. And people always get so angry at me for not pronouncing words right, like I’m choosing to be like this. I hate uneducated people. Adults need more awareness!

I had that exact speech impediment until I was about seven or eight, could not say Rs for the life of me. It took a lot of speech classes to get rid of it.

I’m 22 and can’t pronounce my Rs correctly at all. Did 5 years of speech therapy for my Rs and it never helped. My family makes fun of me bc I’ll say burger but it sounds like buwguh or booger depending on how fast I say it.

I think they mention twice she was a teacher though.
I think the problem is that they measure it in comparison to some singular kid they each know. But in that stage of development kids skills are extremely varied. When I worked babysitting a church group kids I had one 6 year old couldn’t do divisions above 10 and the other that could name big part of geologic time scale in order. At this stage the knowledge and skills are just so different between them it’s hard to compare.
There are all sort of kids. My oldest two are math wizzards and definitively knew basic math by the time they were 4-5.
The 2nd youngest is the best at sports (for his age).
And the youngest knows very well how to read and write (caps) at 3.5 yo.

It’s upsetting how a teacher can’t acknowledge that a 7 year old could not pronounce their R’s it’s ridiculous their so many kids that can’t pronounce certain things correctly because they are still in the learning process I feel like if your a teacher you should acknowledge that a 7 year old is still also learning I’m also aware that it is a grown woman trying to voice a kid but even then it’s ridiculous so many kids genuinely have a pronunciation problem as well
