  • In Germany and Canada around 40% of applications for asylum are approved, in Britain more than 30%. But in Japan the number is 0.2%, and the process is gruelling. Rupert Wingfield-Hayes in Tokyo has been trying to find out why.

      dan taylor I don't know if you live in Europe, but I do. Let me tell you what it is like. People need to live on the streets, and the streets are not very safe. People lose their jobs because the gouvernement needs the building for refugees. Classes are getting bigger, but the classrooms aren't. People are more suspicious and scared of the refugees because of what kind of country they come from. People discriminate more, out of fear. Prices are going up and the city's are flooding. Japan has a lot of big city's and they don't want it to get even fuller. I'm not saying I hate refugees. I think they are very brave. And it brings us great joy to help them. I'm not saying what Japan does is right, I'm just saying I understand why they are doing this, even if I don't like the way they're doing it.

      I live in Europe boy, have done my entire life and I can assure you people do not NEED to live on the streets they do so because their governments refuse to take responsibility for them, doubt Switzerland or Norway has major problems with homelessness, but UK, well that's obvious the Tories being in power has directly affected the number of homeless with astonishing neglect for them. People DON'T lose jobs "because the gouvernement [sic] needs the building for refugees" that's where your economics is appalling! Jobs were lost long before immigration issues in the UK, lest we forget immigration levels of the early 21st century and minimal unemployment, most people had jobs and held onto a permanent job under Labour like that fact or not. Do you not think it's far more likely people lose jobs AFTER 2008 crash? You'll believe anything if you read enough weak media. Trust me Japan will pay severely with their elderly if they do not
      1. accept more immigrants
      2. start increasing the birth rate

    • @Borderose
      @Borderose 8 лет назад +126

      Agreed. If anything other countries should do this more. Neither the European nations, nor America, nor Japan has any natural moral duty to help out these refugees, especially when it seems so many of them refuse to conform to the native culture.
      A country must go out of its way for its citizens who've sworn allegiance to its laws and constitution, there is no reason for a country to go out of its way for a flood of strangers from foreign lands. Also, how fair would that be for people who took the time to go through the necessary legalities and checks in order to get into the country? Not very much, if you ask me.
      Japan made the right call here. Let in only as many refugees as it is comfortable with. Because, again, it has NO obligation to these people.

      When your people destroyed other people? What's wrong with winning? If you ask me, you should have a little more pride in your ancestors. Conquering the world was an admirable goal at the time. No one appreciates the guilt, and to be honest, it feels a little condescending.
      I'm not arguing anything. I'm just saying, that with the way the world is right now, having some caution when it comes to dealing with people fleeing the Middle East isn't a bad thing. People fear loss more than they desire gain. Doesn't matter if a country gains more by letting a hundred good people in, if one radical asshole gets in and makes everyone else feel uneasy, all is undone. And it will stay like this until we finally settle things in the Middle East and people can start communicating again without fear of being bombed or stabbed. It's the terrorists bloody fault things have to turn out like this! It's their fault people are forced to be wary of otherwise normal people! Focus on wiping them out rather than how people try to defend themselves! And if they truly will not bend or adapt because some fundamental part of their identity refuses to make peace with the rest of the world? Then that sense of identity needs to be crushed.

      You're German?What a coincidence! I was just talking to a German a while ago about this particular subject.
      Here's the thing: Enough with the guilt. You guys did WWII. That's sad and bad, and you guys know it, but most of the people who were around at the time are now dead. Time to forgive yourselves! Never forget, but for God's sake, there's nothing wrong with celebrating who you are as a people and valuing it.
      And I never said all stereotypes were going to be smart...Smarter people tend to have a better grasp of things to generalize. Morons don't do so well with that, I'm afraid. Unfortunately, morons are everywhere, hence the reason I'm skeptical about just letting a flood of people unchecked into my borders. With every crowd of people, I _know_ there's going to be a few horrible idiots out there...and I'd really, _really_ like for them to, you know, stop breathing the air around me as much as possible.

      Welcome to war! It's ugly and brutish and brings out some of the most pronounced emotions in the human condition. Enjoy the cookies. Besides, it's not like you guys were the only ones guilty of war crimes. We were at war--we all did terrible things at the time, because war is a terrible situation to be in.
      The Japanese were the West's enemies back in WWII. The camps were unfortunate, but again, the public needed to feel safe. To combat the bad image, Japanese-Americans volunteered to fight in the war. It's these things that ultimately make a difference in how a people are perceived by another. It's unfortunate it has to be this way, but that's how people operate. We wouldn't be where we are now without putting up guards when we feel threatened.

    • @SuuuB
      @SuuuB Год назад +6

      Due to Turkey's strong historical ties with Japan, Kurds originating from Turkey can enter Japan without undergoing a background check by declaring themselves as "refugees." Once they arrive, they are entitled to receive government social aid. However, it is important to acknowledge that a majority of them are not true refugees but rather individuals searching for improved living conditions in Japan, as they were unable to achieve their desired quality of life in Turkey. Furthermore, the individuals who are genuine political refugees often have affiliations with organizations like the PKK and are considered wanted by Turkish authorities. There has been a notable increase in tensions between jp and these ppl over the last years, which raises concerns about the outlook for the future.

    I havent heard of terrorist attacks in Japan, so it cant be all that wrong to keep your country safe. Plus, they believe in the term, Japanese, you allow all sorts of different cultures there and you have a conflict between those cultures and then the "home" culture dies out, so they are trying to keep their culture safe, its been like that since Tokugawa. Europe should take note.

Nowadays refugees here in Hong Kong complain about not being given more money, not being given bigger apartments, not being given computers and mobile phones.. It's so annoying. I am sorry, as a grandchild of people who lived through World II and communism, I have no sympathy for today's ungrateful and whiny refugees here in Hong Kong. The Castelan 1. Strain on available housing - “In the early years even better off migrants tend to form fewer households as compared to the indigenous population; to live disproportionately in private renting; and to live at higher densities. However, the longer they stay, the more their housing consumption resembles that of similar indigenous households.” - London School of Economics
      This, in part, debunks the idea that immigration is the biggest strain on housing - new arrivals tend to live in denser households and take up less space.
      2. Strain on health care - I don't know about elsewhere, but 26% of doctors in the UK are non-British, and I guess it will be similar figures throughout Europe. Restricting immigration will see a fall in available doctors, the government are already struggling to recruit them.
      3. Clash of cultures - most of the clashes are caused in retaliation to the far right nationalistic groups and attitudes which regularly appear. Who's fault are they?

    • @anyam6912
      @anyam6912 8 лет назад +18

      That sounds ridiculous. "Not all!" and "White people do it too!"... Yeah, no one ever said the Western world is perfect. What is being said is why import MORE potential problems and put more of our women and children at risk when we are already struggling to clean up our own issues? This is why so many were saying that all nations should have pulled resources and created refugee camps and safe zones just outside the conflict area. The West has enough problems, it doesn't need to import more. Let's say only 1 in 1000 of the migrants are a bad apple. Look it Rotherham... there were only a handul of perpetrators but they managed to defile and abuse 1400 children!!! Again, why import more potential danger? Why import more risk to a nations women and children if we have enough of our own issues to deal with and there are OTHER ways to provide safety to the refugees/migrants?

    You can actually apply to become a Japanese citizen if you met the following conditions:
    1. Have lived in Japan for more than 5 years consecutively ( worked and paid taxes for more than 3 years)
    2. Age > 20
    3. No criminal records
    4. Have basic skills to make a living
    5. Give up your current citizenship (Japan does not acknowledge dual citizenship)
    6.Obey the Japanese Laws
    So I don't have a problem with Japan not accepting refugees. I have a problem with countries like Saudi Arabia not accepting refugees, they have major responsibilities with the war going on in Syria, and they are Arabic speaking country with closer region and cultural ties to refugees from the neighbouring countries.

If they want to move to a country they can go to a country with the same culture as theirs or change their culture and religion so they can join another country. What Japan should do is make the harsh working culture more reasonable and give people greater conditions for having a decent life and raise families. Long live Japan 🇯🇵

    It can be called racism, but the real reason is preservation of cultural identity. Is the way Japan protect their people. Most of the people seeking refuge are not been persecuted in their countries. They want to go Japan for economic reasons. Do they want to go China ? Nope. Anyway, asian countries don't take many aplications or " cuotas ", they don't want them. Their culture clash against them. One big example: look at Europa, a lot of cultural clashes that become violent and lethal. Beside that, Japan is a small territory and they have enough with koreans, chinese and others asian nationals.

    As a Japanese, I am glad to see that many countries are understanding about Japan's immigration policy. While some immigrants are good citizens, others are illegal aliens, criminals, or spies from other countries who take advantage of the chaos to try to enter Japan. This leads to a deterioration of public safety and an increase in crime. Japan protects its culture, its people, and its security by strictly controlling immigration. Immigrants and refugees are different, and it is not easy to be recognized as a refugee in Japan. Immigrants are not all good people, which is why Japan has a strict immigration policy.

    I think it's right to accept refugees in my country, but not in Japan. Japan is a very special country, with respect, likes and dislikes. Japanese people wants people that have a dream to live there, learn the language and help out. Not people who just come there to live because they have to. That would be immigrating for the opposite of what Japan wants and needs. I don't think the middle eastern society would fit well in to Japan, and I think they would wash out Japan. In my country, around 3% is now middle eastern immigrants. Our country has changed a lot, I'm not saying bad, but it's not the same anymore. Children in school arent allowed to sing old christian traditional songs, because there might be a person from Islam there. A muslim child wouldnt probably be allowed to wear the girl uniform in their country, and at school dinner they wouldnt be allowed to eat pork, or swim with other students. I don't think they could meet Japan's standarts.. No offence. I don't think they should take with them all the rules and standards from their country, and do what changed my country with Japan also.
