That I258 is such a great fig. I got one from Herman about 4 years ago and it's amazing. Love your idea about growing in the ground through the summer and then digging it up and taking inside through the winter.

Thanks, Mike! My method really works, especially with particularly Winter sensitive varieties. However, in my hostile zone, 7-A, in New Jersey, that description can actually apply to any fig tree. Growing in ground fig trees is an exhausting challenge in this extremely difficult location. Mike, I've been wanting to add to my previous comments regarding your very interesting collection of in ground fig varieties. For what it's worth, I always say, removing the winter mulch in Spring, and allowing the sun to warm the soil, will help to awaken your trees sooner, and therefore help to produce an earlier crop. Mulch will actually delay soil warming considerably! You can even encircle them with black (water porous) weed stop in the Spring to hasten warming, as well. The roots, which can not be seen, will awaken first, before anything above ground becomes visible. This factor is extremely important for Fig enthusiasts attempting to grow an orchard in unforgiving zones! I also allow my water buckets to warm in the greenhouse or house before watering in the Spring. Doing so adds hundreds of thousands of thermal units of heat to the soil, which over time will advance the growing season significantly. I have videos on this subject in my collection which explain these techniques in better detail. Thanks for watching, take care! Lou Monti

Lou, I am enjoying your fig videos. If you could only have 5 varieties, what would they be?

Hi there! That question, and yes, I have been asked it before, is extremely difficult to answer!!! Honestly, you have no idea just how difficult it is to Hypothetically limit my collection to only 5 varieties! Keep in mind that I am perhaps the fig worlds strongest advocate in keeping a fig collection to as small a number of varieties as a means of management practicality! Keeping it to only 5 varieties, however, strains my imagination to the point of psychological torture! Lol! This task becomes even more daunting when I consider that certain varieties grow much better in the ground and that others (in my hostile environment) must be grown in containers!!! Can you understand my struggle? Thos is what I recommend. For now, how about you watch more of my videos. After a while, I think that you will eventually gain a very accurate impression regarding many of my all time favorite varieties. Thank you for your question and thanks for watching! Regards from, Lou Monti

Lou, I just noticed that your I258 brebas in this video are just getting ripe on July 3rd 2019, and that you have another video from the same day where you pick your last Desert King, and you have a video from just the next day saying that your RdB is starting to ripen.
So, it sounds like your I258 has a remarkably late breba crop, because my understanding is that most brebas come well before RdB.
I'm trying to put together a list of early, mid, and late brebas with large fruit, so that I can have a long breba season. So I was wondering if your I258 is consistently an extremely late Breba for you?
And has it become a productive breba producer? Does it ever drop its brebas?

Hi lou I have this variety and I would like to know if its a prolific produce of breba crop (I want to put this inground location Malta Europe). Also whats the average size both of brebas and main crop? And in terms of productivity how do you rate this? Thanks for your time! Best regards Joseph

Hi, Joseph! In my opinion, Genovese Nero and Italian 258 are the same variety or, at the very least, extremely similar! They do produce an acceptable amount of Breba and they are very (VERY) delicious, but they do not produce an abundance like some other varieties. Both the main crop figs, as well as the Breba, are on the large side and have excellent flavor. It's certainly one of the very best fig varieties in my collection and I would highly recommend it for in ground planting wherever the climate is conducive to it's vitality and its tendency towards late season ripening. Good luck and regards from Lou Monti
