This has become my everyday shirt pocket pen. It is lightweight and the metal clip is excellent. I have the bright and happy orange. I like the transparent colored barrel which has no printed clutter and looks sharp with the cap posted. The medium nib writes like a German medium.

Thank you for this informative and entertaining review. My Preppy came clean when I polished it with heavy duty carborundum polish paste, i little buff-stick work and it was crystal clear. The clip came loose after a while, and cyanoacrylate fastened it again, but my trust in it is still gone. It feels as if it could snap right off.
If I needed another pen, I’d buy the Prefounte for the clip, and adding a bit of coulor to my life at the same time.

I like the clean look of the pen, so to me it would be worth it over the Preppy. BTW, I've never used an o-ring when eyedroppering Preppies or Kaweco Sports.

I have a blue preppy, and I sanded the logo off. Highly recommend for aesthetics.

Prefounte = Preppy with lipstick, mascara and a new coat!

I would not expect a new pen to come with anything but blue or black ink.

Except the Platinum Preppy comes with a cartridge that matches the cap color (red, blue, green, etc).

Never bought a Preppy (ditto the pricier Lamy Safari/Pilot Metropolitan). But I was somehow considering getting this Prefounte a few days ago as a cheaply priced, daily companion to my 2-3 other far nicer, much pricier pens that are my usual EDC pens. This review reminded me that I can easily eyedropper fill the pen, which I’d much prefer to lousy cartridges or a Platinum converter costing $8. The better clip and attractive colours are improvements that sort of justify the two-fold price jump over the old Preppy. The 0.5 mm nib, though, with that fine line is a downer. I guess I’ll still very likely buy this same emerald Prefounte anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there are few Preppies in translucent colours. I don't really understand what Platinum is trying here, they could have just release more colours for the Preppy.. If I really loved how the Preppy writes, I'd get a Plaisir as an upgrade. (I'm refilling cartridges, so not eye-droppering doesn't bother me)

I think they're going for the look of a pricier pen... I would buy it because I hate advertising/printing on the barrel of my Preppy. It is disappointing that it doesn't come with matching ink as the Preppy does.

Aloha Alan! Watching this review for the 3rd or 4th time, after finally getting one of these pens! Actually the vermillion orange was backordered for over a month. I held off because of the grip section, most notably because Platinum missed an opportunity to just make it look better! Either a matching color or maybe just a black? Even a different color for the feed? The Preppy does have a matching color feed or at least it's shade to match the pen color and they even had colored nibs! But I think a grey feed and clear grip section just looks cheap - fine for the Preppy, but not for the Prefounte or the Plaisir for that matter? BTW, if you use the gold colored converter, you can see a slight hint of gold in that clear band you mentioned, but doesn't match the silver colored clip! Can't wait until tomorrow morning! Any hints as to what pen and ink you have coming up? Mahalo, Thomas

wonder if the plastic cap lip will crack like preppies. Procyon probably still better if one wants upscale preppy

    • @meh8982
      @meh8982 4 года назад

The Platinum Plaisir is an upscale Preppy (aluminum body, with the section interchangeable with a Preppy). The Procyon is a different nib and section design altogether and a higher quality pen.

Is the barrel still as crack-prone as the Preppy?

    • @WhatIInk

Hard to say at this point, I've only had it a short time. Let's see how it goes over time. But, frankly I haven't had cracking problems with my Preppys.

No. 1: No manufacturer in the world matches a colored pen to its matching colored ink cartridge purchased like this. Can’t imagine why you would have expected it. No 2: The Prefonte and the Preppy are essentially IDENTICAL re size and the parts are totally interchangeable. One’s barrel screws right into the other’s section, etc. Caps snap on back and forth with no issues. No: Here’s the best thing: Buy a Platinum $4 Adapter and plug it into the section to accept any and all International cartridges and converters. I think it’s a “150A” Adapter. Most vendors have ‘em and they fit everything from the Preppy to the President.

No manufacture matches the pen to the ink cartridge?
      Really?
How about what Platinum does with the Preppy?

Given how important aesthetics is in the fountain pen world, I'd say that the more "upscale" aesthetics makes it more or less worth it.

I think the closest to a word in French or Spanish would be “Pluma Fuente” since in French the word is “Stylo Plume”.

Ten dollars is not a big deal. The aesthetics of the pen are certainly worth $5. I’ve never bought a Preppy and won’t, but I’m considering this one just as an extra one to keep in a desk drawer or in a bag. The main issue to me is the 0.5mm. If it came in a 0.7mm, I’d buy one today. I don’t mind buying a converter. Any pen in that price range is not going to have one, anyway. Thanks for the review.

I do think one could swap nibs with a preppy, yet then you are in it for $15 for two pens to get the customization you want. It would be worth it to me. Your mileage may vary.

I have a .5 mm on a Preppy and it writes more like a broad nib, and lays down a lot of ink.

It looks slightly nicer, but I have a 3776 so no need for it. If I wanted a cheaper pen id buy one......so preppy.
