Gordon's music will live forever. I've watched the 1971 BBC concert of his so many times I'm embarrassed to say how many. Hang in there Gordon Lightfoot. Dylan said every song of yours is a masterpiece. I agree.
A very beautiful cover of my fav Lightfoot song. I remember being 7-8 & hearing it for the first time at a Lightfoot concert.....I was standing, mezmerized, didnt feel my mom trying to get me to sit down.... Thank you so much for this & that memory.
It is unusual for me to like any version of Gordon LIghtoot's music sung by anyone but the man himself but this is spectacular, moving and powerful! Beautiful!
Well this was a real treat! This song is my all time favorite love song, and listening to your beautiful rendition of it…the ebb & flow of the phrasing, and the beautiful trained voice with the classical guitar style totally brought out a performance that was like listening to a 16th century English/Scottish troubadour singing for nobility. Beautiful, just beautiful. Bravo!
Oh my god... I never knew anyone covered this "deep track" Lightfoot song, let alone two lovely ladies. Thank You!!! Beautiful. This song is one the reminds me of a lost love from 30 years ago.. of a redhead no less.... so seeing you do this... *sigh*
There is a lot of eloquence in old 'folk' singers. These gals are sharp for picking up on this. I also really like Gordons' 'Song for a Winter's night'. Good stuff !
This is my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song. You sing it even more beautifully than he did when he recorded that album I bought back in the day. Your classical training shows, and lends itself well to Gordon's more tender songs.
As I listen & watch it over & over, I'm struck by how well you use your hands to put the song across. Your performance is not only beautiful; it is intelligent.
Very nice - I started out comparing your rendition of this GL tune to Gordon himself but soon forgot that endeavor having gotten lost in the emotion conveyed in the lyrics and your voice. I like it very much.
Thank you. So nice you caught my reply. While I am here and thought art listening. This song .captured my heart because I had my first love from Stockholm Sweden. And I was due to ship out in the military our time way too short and the distance was the tragic end to what we both tried to hold onto and she loved Gordon lightfoot and I play acoustic .anyway we sat by the ocean listening holding wondering can the forces of life destroy what we had begun. We had three months and. Life took us into other destinies. I will never love someone like her. I still miss her after twenty years. Your wonderful version nice,, I will subscribe if that's kool. And you are in Ottawa. Wow. Gordy territory.. Let me know if Seattle WA USA comes to your schedule. I'm at your service. Peace love and hippy beads.

I ache that this isn't recorded somewhere. I've said it before this is stunning...you both are stunning. Is there more of this set someplace? It all must have been as magical as this is.
Very nice my ladies. I'm a gordy fan since I was a young lad.. Seen him five times and you did this song so sweetly. Thank you. I'm in Seattle .WA. are you Canadian?

Thank you for your reply! I enjoy listening to singers whose background is opera/musical theatre because you can actually understand the lyrics. About Puccini, his was the first name I thought of. Do you have a favorite role? 08/17/2017
Thanks for the red heart Wallis. I play this song a lot on guitar but of course I can't match Gordon Lightfoot's voice. The song has something of the English madrigal about it, so I wonder what were his influences as boy, since this song does not really slot into his stream of folk and country songs at that time.
You're right. It sure does not sound like normal "popular music" at the time. I would love to know more about his early influences. Tell me if you find out!
@@wallis.giunta I don't know. I will have to read his biography. I have read that he was a choirboy and his voice was remarkable. His his early public performances were in Massey Hall Toronto and no doubt were formal and classical material, chosen for him.He already had a grounding in musical theory by the time he was taught fingerstyle after he had left home quite young to study in the US. Unlike Bob Dylan his guitaring is far more than adequate, and unlike Tommy Emmanuel , no doubt he can read music. A gifted performer and master of composition. To me represents everything inspiring and wonderful about Canada. I must go there one day! By the way, you two should try the Seabird Song....another gem..
Ms Giunta obviously has a beautiful voice. Sometimes I prefer a more "earthly" tone for songs like this. Lightfoot is still #1, this is a very close second.
Great cover. Better than Gord? Maybe in terms of pure vocal training. But Gord wrote it and lived it, and therein lies the difference. Beautiful though.
Brian, this is now the fourth time (at least) in three years you have left a comment of basically the exact same sentiment on this same video. Care to explain?
Yeah I’m wondering what’s up with these yearly comments of yours Brian. Wallis shared your odd habits on her instagram. This is a whole ‘nother level of creepy. PS - telling someone they can’t sing something just gives them another reason to sing it.
Hi Brian, thanks for the info, and the compliment. You might not be surprised to learn that I was fully aware of what the song was about when I chose to sing it. I am primarily an opera singer, and in the world of opera, there are many male characters who are written to be performed by a female singer. It's called a pants role - kind of like the opposite of a drag queen ;) In the recital where this recording was taken, I was exploring repertoire for both women and men, one half of the program for each. I wore a suit for the gender switch, as a nod to the male perspective for this piece and the others in the gentlemen's half of the concert. I hope that makes sense. Regardless of this, however, I believe that gender is rather irrelevant when telling stories with themes as universal as love, infidelity and such. An artist is a storyteller, and we should be able to transcend barriers like age and gender and move people with the power of music and truth. Also, I sang this piece for Gordie at his 70th birthday celebration in Toronto and he had no problem with it. I'd encourage you to keep more of an artistically open mind :)
@@MacMcCaskill I assume you're referring to Brian who has made some version of the same comment on my video 3 years in a row now? I honestly don't know what's up with it, but I'm guessing he keeps forgetting he's already done it 🤦🏻♀️
eddie alan Don’t worry, I perform lots of opera! But it’s a shame you feel that way...when I was invited by Gordie to sing some of his own songs at his 70th birthday in Toronto, he was thrilled that I was performing his music. Open minded and creative musicians appreciate that we do much better when we don’t put ourselves into boxes, artistically.
Hi Brian, thanks for your kind words. I have actually met Gordie, and have sung his music for an event in his honour, and he was thrilled about it. He did not feel his songs were gender specific. Also, perhaps you're not aware, but the convention in classical music for several hundred years now has been that women with lower voices (like me!) often sing the roles of young men in the opera. In this recital, it was my intention to do a similar sort of thing, and wear a suit and do a gender-bending take on repertoire written for a male singer. I am aware that Gordon wrote it from his own (male) perspective, but those of us in the arts have a more fluid take on performance and telling stories, and thankfully, we are not restricted by our gender or sex. The idea of unattainable love is rather universal, and my goal was to transcend my gender and share this amazing piece of music. I would welcome you to explore a more open minded take on music appreciation :)
@@briancrowley6413 Oh, I'm not offended, don't worry! I just don't agree with you. When one makes a comment that implies their opinion is fact, they should be prepared for some informed pushback ;)
