Nice Eddie, didn't realize how big that pile was.. it's huge.. we use to ride the mine Slate dumps on our bikes when we was kids and we thought they were big.. but man, that is a HYGE pile of slag.. thanks for the ride along

@@TriGogglin yeah Pappy this puts it into scale, imagine how much steel was produced to create this much slag. That 4 lane highway was built in the late 80s right after the Monessen steel mill shut down, essentially splitting the dump in half, it didn’t really matter because the dump was no longer in use. The slag was brought by rail off a spur on the W&LE tracks by the car wash/beer distributor I get videos at. If you think about it the whole steel making process is monumental, everything that goes into it and even where they put the ‘garbage’ per say. Appreciate you watching Pappy, have a good one brother 👍🏼🇺🇸😎

Nice one Stretch, yeah there's a lot of slag they used to pour down the hill by the mill here. They had to stop when the freeway came through but you can still see it when you drive by. -CXD

@@MillersRailfan my pleasure Stephen. It just blows my mind on how monumental the steel making process is, from mining the ore and the coal, to making the coke, to smelting everything in a furnace, forging billets, rolling them, finishing them, shipping them and of course getting rid of the garbage/slag, in which we see it’s final resting place☠️

Thanks for the entertainment. To a degree it reminds me of the piles of overburden from the iron mines in upper Michigan and Minnesota. Curiosity prevails as to what years this was in operation. Also I'm going to presume these were United States Steel properties and by chance are any of the mills that produced this slag still in operation and just how much rail operation was here to support this even though it would keep moving as you fill it in. There's also a whole bunch of quarries around Chicago that have some big pits but sadly you can't take a drive through them. Could you imagine dumping a load of swill then covering it with hot slag? Time for a cold one

@@paulbergen9114 hey Paul, yes this was US Steel that dumped here, this was all from Monessen I believe, which the Monessen mill has long been torn down. This was definitely brought by rail, the videos of W&LE I take at the beer distributor, those tracks used to branch off into these dumps, I believe then it was the Pittsburgh & West Virginia RR that operated. That 4 lane highway was put built in the late 80’s, right when the mill shut down, it essentially split the slag dump in half, which didn’t matter since it was no longer in operation. It amazes me how much steel was produced to create this much slag. Love your comments Paul, appreciate you watching and have a great rest of your day👍🏼😎🇺🇸

@@stretchlimo7275 thanks for the info plus the other remembrances you had. I remember in the Rock Islands last year's they bought a lot of the slag from the south Chicago Mills and while it was cheaper being as Jagged as it was it cut up and destroyed ties faster. I was talking to a buddy of mine about this and he said you had to keep in mind raw iron ore used into the early 1960s oftentimes was 40% dirt and other Rock. There are a couple good videos on dumping slag on RUclips and the craziest ones are when it hits water
