I love how little you guys know about your motorcycle. If you think the screen is the only filtering device on the grom then keep on doing whatever you're doing and that little grom will not last long. What burns your oil (makes it black or smell burnt) is riding wheelies because the grom has no way to pump oil while you're riding on the back tire. You can buy a kit that has a tube that runs towards the back of the engine so when you pop it up the oil pump will pick up oil. It's a spinner filter, not a slinger, they were first used on Big Trucks to help keep the oil cleaner for longer service intervals.
hey kids, just put a nice new copper penny in those gears, on the top for when you're taking spinner bolts off, and on the bottom for putting spinner bolts back in. s...m...h.... dont forget to take the penny out when done. wedge a towel behind if you think it might fall into the oil flow holes...
Ugh i just did the same exact thing. Just used an impact cause thats what i had on hand.. unfortunately my extraction hasnt been as lucky. The bit just keeps slipping out of the hole in the bolt. Put some lock tight on it hoping that helps.. really hoping i dont have to change the whole rotor, cause i cant find any turorial vids on how to do that lmao
The best part is I know better, and usually the drill isn't fully charged so I can get away with it, but this time it had a fresh battery and well you can see the result.
Good video, could you tell me how many miles this bike had on it when you cleaned the oils spinner? (I.E - How many miles did the bike do since you last changed the oil spinner until you made this video?) The amount of crud in the spinner is a lot! I cleaned mine at 12000 KM (oil change every 2000KM) and I had nothing like that gunge in my motor, in fact there was barely enough dirt in there to dirty a rag. I notice you also had some rather large lumps of gunk in the strainer, that seems a bit weird, maybe related? Thanks for the video! (By the way, the torque spec for those bolts is 12N M or 1.2KG/M or 9FtLbs)
I believe the bike had gone about 1000 miles since the las change, and that was the smallest amount of crud I had ever wiped out of it. I did a buddies at 1000 miles right after the dealer did it and Id never seen so much gunk. The bikes don't seem to run any different, we do a lot of dirt track riding and lots of clutch ups so its all part of the game.
Remeber to check your valves at your first oil change. Mine were crazy tight. I hate to imagine what 6000+ miles of having no valve clearance would do to your head.
If you put a oil treatment in the oil you never have to take that off because it will clean it self all you would have to do is clean the filter and change the Oils I hope this makes your job a lil easier Next time you change your the Oil use a treatment it will break down all deposits and they will come out into the dirty oil pan
grom life. ya you are hard on your bike but at least you are driving it. that thing needs a super cleaning though. and yes some new gaskets next time you do it. or just buy like a roll of gasket paper and you can make your own.
The bike has no real filter just a crappy screen and runs a wet clutch which dumps a lot of material into the oil it is also less than 1 qt of oil so its better to be safe than sorry. Sometimes Ill run it a little longer, but I prefer to not.
Honda say every 4,000 km/2,500 miles after the first change; most bikes have wet clutches; the screen does its job; it's backed up by that spinning mechanism; modern oil lasts. I could understand 1,500 miles, but it's up to you. Do you happen to know if this engine is the same as the Honda Wave 125i step-thru bike, albeit with a normal clutch set-up?
Im not sure if it is a similar engine, but that is also another reason I do such frequent changes is the build up of clutch material in the oil spinner. It has been much less the last couple of changes so I may start extending the changes a bit, but I ride this bike pretty hard so who know lol the oil is so cheap and its so easy to do I like the idea of having it super fresh all the time. Im a little weird like that.
Well its a From to get around you have to ride 100% all the time lol. The bike just spends a lot of time at high RPM's in order to do the speed limits around town where a larger bike can cruise at 50+ under 3k RPM's these bikes are only a couple hundred RPMs off of their redlines and I don't think its necessarily bad but it does cause extra wear that i try and circumvent with oil changes.
Also youre supposed to put blue locktite on the bolts for the oil spinner cover. And google the torque spec. Its pretty low.... i wanna say 12 ft-lbs..... but you can google it in 2 seconds.
School of Ruckus i noticed on the video that it sounds like the old one , like mine did, the new one i have has a higher pitch sound , i had les torque after the replacment , noticed the dealer did not do a ecm reset and initialze after replacment , did it myself , run great again , well the horse kicks in at 5k rpm
Thats funny. Use hand to tighten it . Never machine . And dont stop the video, use small drill bit to make hole and use flat screw driver to take out the broken part, so people who did same mistake can learn how to fix the rest.
that gasket is the easiest thing to get ! www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-MSX125-Grom-2013-2016-Genuine-Oil-Filter-Spinner-Clutch-Cover-Gasket/311664317056?epid=1688773580&hash=item4890a41280:g:l48AAOSwaB5Xl3Fv&vxp=mtr or just call ANY honda dealer and ask !
When there nothing wrong with ur bike in first place why should ya then when u do it starts fucking about aka when u say that had to do a second recall because the first one didn’t work that’s bad crack why change it in first place
Well done for leaving your mess up online for people to learn from your mistakes, most would not !
Trevor Ferris 👍🏻

Mad respect you got my sub for leaving that in the video
blue Loctite works wonders and recommended by Honda on the oil spinner
Hey Tallahassee. I’ll keep my eye out for ya around town. Cheers👌
Very good video, I enjoyed it. You sheared off that one Bolt but hey, that happens to us all.
Ugh i just did the same exact thing. Just used an impact cause thats what i had on hand.. unfortunately my extraction hasnt been as lucky. The bit just keeps slipping out of the hole in the bolt. Great video man. You’re chill as hell. Ride safe.
lol never use impact gun to tighten!
The best part is I know better, and usually the drill isn't fully charged so I can get away with it, but this time it had a fresh battery and well you can see the result.
maomaniarocks Took the words right out of my mouth
what is your handguard? they look nice

I think it's a $5-600 exhaust that sounds and performs exactly the same as a Zoom bought from Tommy Davis for $200
i've been slacking, only done 1 oil change at 600 miles.... bike now has 3500 miles on it, i think its due an oil change!
Same here
My dealer has tons of crank case gaskets in stock lol.
Put foil around your exhaust pipe next time👍😊
never take the cover off without a new gasket in hand !!!!!
Say it with me kids torque wrench...
The tittle of this video should be “what not to do while changing your Grom’s oil”. What about the loctite in those spinners bolts?
Pedro Freire its not an external bolt loctite aint necessary
Your bike sounds awesome!!!
grom life. ya you are hard on your bike but at least you are driving it. that thing needs a super cleaning though. and yes some new gaskets next time you do it. or just buy like a roll of gasket paper and you can make your own.
but good on you for owning it like a champion... good tip cheers
Bro you should of went to the junkyard and get the 10mm bolts from a 98-200 civic they are the same
Every 500 miles. Isn't that rather excessive? .

You're the sort of bloke I'd buy secondhand from, irrespective of how hard you ride.

Do the kitaco clutch cover and get rid of that thing and add a real filter.
Bryan OnTheBike i heard you loose torque for wheelies
Also youre supposed to put blue locktite on the bolts for the oil spinner cover. And google the torque spec. Its pretty low.... i wanna say 12 ft-lbs..... but you can google it in 2 seconds.
does your new fuelpump have a higher pitch sound too?
stefaan adriansens I haven't noticed any change in pitch.
Never opened the engine when still hot.my some bolts will be break.
NEVER USE AN IMPACT GUN ON ANYTHING UNDER 1/2 inch, FOR JUST THAT REASON. GEEZ.
Not taking any advice from someone that reuses a gasket like that again.
To each their own.
where did you get that handguards
pablowito they're just generic hand guards they take a little work to make fit, but they work I believe I ordered them from Amazon.
Cheers🌝👍

nobody's perfect but that was just dumb... but live and learn I guess
oh no
