As much as it hurts to have Ace die, it's a canon event. It's the real origin story for Luffy. It's the reason for 3D2Y. The reason Luffy vowed to become even stronger, as he realizes what he has now isn't enough to protect his loved ones. But it's truly traumatizing for Luffy and I can see why post time-skip strawhats are way more serious than before.
