The game's opening easily trumps that of the anime's.

There was an anime for this?

Yup, there was a 26 episodes anime adaptation in 2008 by Sunrise, and it's pretty mediocre compared to the game. It did have a little bit of additional backstories for some characters, but it chopped a lot of the moments between characters, and butchered some other crucial ones, the animation was bad and recycled at many points, and it was just an obvious lazy cashgrab that had little care put into it.
Really, just playing the game is easily the best choice instead of watching the anime.

Oh okay. Because I'm playing the game right now and I just returned Luke back to his place.

Oh? Is that so? Then let me explain in full detail what is wrong with the anime adaptation of Tales of the Abyss.
The video game is pretty successful in Japan, so it wasn't a surprise that it eventually got an anime adaptation. The Tales of the Abyss anime aired in 2008, just as Sunrise had finished working on and airing Code Geass R2, which had obviously better animation and more work put into it, however, the level of animation in Abyss's was considerably lower than R2, many other high profile Sunrise shows, or even compared to either the animated cutscenes in the game. And that's just the beginning of the problems it had.
The story in the anime literally just followed the main events that happened in the game, and added some backstories for certain characters here and there (which is a nice touch, props to that), but that's about it. No skits were included, and many of the character interaction were cut out. Sure, the length meant that obviously some stuff would be cut out, so I'm going to bring in another Tales of anime adaptation, Tales of Symphonia OVA's, which was done by ufotable.
The skits are a vital part of the Tales games, (which you would obviously know if you've played any of the Tales of games), which the Tales of Symphonia adaptation, despite its shorter length, included, and included even more character interactions, while still retaining a coherent story, while Abyss, despite it being longer, cut out the skits, and many character interactions, and just focused on getting the story from point A to point B, which just left it feeling hollow and devoid of the characteristics found in the game.
This show clearly didn't have as much as effort and care put into it as it should have. (Again, Tales of Symphonia. Much shorter, yet feels much more alive and had much more care put into it.) Sunrise even somehow managed to dull down some of the most emotional and important parts in the story, and the end result was just an above average anime.
It is a lazy cash grab because Sunrise wanted a quick buck out of a successful game, and instead of putting effort into it, just churned out a disappointing and very mediocre adaptation of a fantastic game.
The best way to experience Tales of the Abyss is to simply play the game, and if you never watch the anime, you're not missing out on much.
And for the record, I have both played the game to completion, and seen the anime, so I'm not talking based on nothing.
