Thanks for this reaction, Justin! Always one of my favorite Brian May songs. Definitely one of my favorites of this album! Really looking forward to the next track- Millionaire Waltz!
I love Long Away, one of my favorites from the album, and the first song I learned to play on guitar from Queen whnen I was a kid... Such a shame they didn't play this song alive
This, to me, is very reminiscent of My Back Pages by The Byrds but again goes to confirm the presence of four excellent songwriters in the band. Most bands would kill for one.
“Lonely as a whisper on a star chase” could only be written and sung by an Astrophysicist which would be lead guitarist Dr. Sir Brian May. I absolutely love this song with his smooth vocal. Love Brian’s creations.
Four brilliant songwriters with four distinct personalities. I don’t think there is a bad song in their whole catalog. Queen will always be the example of what a band can be and what music can do. We all miss Freddie, there will never be another.
Hi Justin. Dave from Beyond The Sea. I like your description, and I agree it is a classy song written and sung by Brian, quite similar to '39 from the previous album. I still treat it as a deep cut more than a Queen classic, but it adds to the terrific variety on this album. I think it has a Byrds vibe to it.
‘Beach boys quality’ - yes! (Brian’s pre-Queen band was called SMiLE - don’t know if there’s any connection) - this is SO well arranged- it’s a pleasant tho unassuming song made stellar by attention to detail - gorgeous details.
The Taylor, finished my suit. Call the Deacon today. The Mercury is falling, and Summer's "Long Away". So, get on with sermon, preacher. Come what May, it's cold out there, so have your say.( Because, I really want to get back to my warm home today)!🥶✌&❤.
May's song that he sings and plays on a 12 string guitar. He was a big fan of John Lennon whom he was influenced by on this song and wanted to give the tune also a Byrds folk rock atmosphere. So you are right to say it has a 60s feeling to it!
I do not often say this: First This song is sung by Brian May, i think. This album is so much underrated. It was not easy releasing this after the brilliant "A Night At..." album. Love this track.
'A Day At The Races' followed 'A Night At The Opera'..both Marx Bros films.. I thought (as did many others) their next film would be 'Duck Soup'....turned out it was News Of The World..(I believe there's a famous bootleg out there called 'Duck Soup)..love this underratedsong..nice one JP
Funny that you mention the harmonies sounding like the Beach Boys...In 1973, while Queen were recording their first album, Freddie Mercury released a single under the name Larry Lurex. The songs on the single were covers of The Beach Boys "I Can Hear Music" and The Byrds "Goin' Back" “Back in the old days, we were often compared to Led Zeppelin. If we did something with harmony, it was the Beach Boys. Something heavy was Led Zeppelin.” - Freddie Mercury
According to Adolf RickenBACKer, you went with the preferred pronunciation. (Although his grandad probably used the "ah"?). Oh, and nice song! I forgot: Andy Edwards has just put out something you might like. It's instrumental (with him playing everything - centred on the drums, obviously) and ... pyschedelic? ... it's a trip, anyway. A good one. A bad one. Good-and-bad when it goes bad, though. ruclips.net/video/40WPUq2WLwc/видео.html
Was Nirvana and Nine Inch Nails dropped from your reactions? That's not my favorite Nine Inch Nails record by a long shot but I still like hearing people's perspectives on it.
I get a little frustrated with comments that any song not written or lead vocalized by Fredrick, is not worthy of this or that. Hogwash. I like hearing something from the other members of the band. It’s difficult to have the weight of songwriting of a whole album…
That might be too broad a statement. For instance, The Prophet's Song is Brian's. (He let Freddie do his thing to it, so probably wasn't territorial about whose it "really was". I think they all helped on each other's songs?)
@@sicko_the_ew yes, The Prophet Song is one of the exceptions. I wouldn’t be surprised if the vocal section in Prophet Song was written by Brian as well. I think he expanded the idea from Brighton Rock and expanded it to three parts instead of two. Freddie added vocals to where the guitar would’ve been.
@@jaybird4093 There's a video titled something like "The Making of the Prophet's Song" on RUclips. As far as I recall, he just handed over the vocals to Freddie, and Freddie improvised over an echo, building up layer upon layer all in one take. Something like that. It's quite a long video, but I thought the time spent on it was worth it (even if, as you can see, my memory of it is not the best).
My favorite queen song. I used to play it for my daughter when she was a little girl. She still listens to it
Is 'Drowse' on this album. Love that song. One of Roger's finest.
@@greghansell5115 yes it is !
I like that groove 2

Long Away is close to my heart. Thank you for featuring this wonderful Brian May creation💖

Thank you XFL :) Hope you're having a nice Friday

Probably my favourite Queen album.

I agree that the song gets better along the way.
Bass and the harmonies are the best elements for me.
Fits great on the flow of the album
I've always liked this one. Such a gentle little rocker. You could almost call it "polite". 😂
a tactful tune ;)
A retrained rocker.
Best song on the album after this one, The Millionaire Waltz ;)
'The Millionaire Waltz' sits easily in Queen's top 10 compositions. Imo it's a top 5 tune!
@@Owlstretchingtime78 The part where the guitar starts to come in is so badass, I love it. In my top 5 Queen comps of all time :)

Sounds like Boston “Hitch A Ride”.
To me, it’s got that Tommy James and the Shondells, Dragging the Line feel.
Maybe not…
Didn't really remember this track. Nice one, though!

Seems like they wanted to write an American sounding song and succeeded. Very enjoyable.

They'll be comin
Sounds just like a Tom Petty strummer to me!
I love this album. Possibly my favourite Queen album. This is a lovely track, but not my favourite by quite some way.
My favourite album also, with 'The Millionaire Waltz' the strongest track!
@@Owlstretchingtime78 I have a soft spot for "White Man", but most of it is perfection.

I find Brian May’s songwriting underwhelming. There are exceptions but this is not one. Next up is another brilliancy from Freddie.
