You missed the most fascinating aspect of Macquarie Island. It is the only place on earth where rocks from the Earth's mantel are being exposed above sea level. In fact, this is the actual reason it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not because of the wildlife.
Socotra Island, the native people there have a string of DNA that no other ethnicity has, even their human population is unique. And as for the Dragon Blood tree, it has a lot of health and medicinal benefits
Yesss I love my island in it’s nature, now there are sadly more people there who don’t respect the religious boundaries as well as UAE chopping down 20,000 of our trees 😔
Lovely documentary. Showing the fascination of islands and their communities, though of course there are many others in this world. You finish on Tory island, what a nice touch. Followed this on Google maps.
Easter Island was already a mess when the Chilleans got there. Notice the deforestation? Inner tribal warfare had reduced the island to a shadow of it's former greatness.
How does that diamond mine not end up flooded? You’d think being that it’s an island that they would have water coming into the mines there. I mean I know you could pump it out, but seems odd to me, can’t pump out the whole ocean worth of water that could constantly keep refilling. Obviously that’s not happening. But just seemed odd to me.
I would imagine they use pumps like they do in the taconite mines of the iron range. Even hard rock mines have to pump when they dig below the water table
I helped design and build Diavik. We used a water-tight cutoff wall to keep the water out. But it was challenging, because the cutoff wall was built in the lake where only the surface freezes in winter. Everything we built would become permafrost, and the cutoff wall had to work while the cutoff was still thawed, while it was freezing and then afterwards when it froze solid (today). We also used deep grouting to further reduce water inflow that might come from deep in the rock.
I love islands. I live on an island, off the coast of another island, and have three islands on my land. Lol All islands are cool, because they're all different.
Sealand actually announced it was extending its territorial waters the day before the UK did and argued the UK was in its waters mostly as they knew the UK would do the same!
Not true.. some norwegian scientists visit it regularly..as owners..but obv due to its isolated status plus semi permanent icey situation, no one else does.. or would want to..!!
Oops and then there is ahem Rockall in the N Atlantic. Part of Scotland tho both Denmark (thru the nearby Faroe) and Ireland deny that such a uninhabited and frankly downright uninhabitable piece of rock, can generate a 12 mile fisheries limit round it!!
Hi there, thank you so much for that correction. I'm the narrator for this channel and I always try to find a reliable source of pronunciations. That one, if I remember correctly always gave me trouble to find a correct pronunciation. 😊
You are lying, it was Peru who took the people from the Island to the Continent as slaves. The chilean navy came to rescue the natives who where starving. And, the people stopped building Moais centuries before the time you are speaking about
It’s always disappointing when a colony of feral cats is identified somewhere and everyone gets excited, and people start feeding them because they’re cute. There’s seldom a discussion of the ecological devastation that released cats cause local species because they are very effective hunters. They are terrible for the environment. The proper thing to do would be to exterminate the whole population, like any other overrun invasive species introduced into an ecosystem. If they didn’t have fur that’s likely what would happen.
This case is different. Oh and you are completely wrong about people not discussing the eco effects. People are banging on it about all the time. People like you for example. We all know about invasive species. Programmes to catch and release are in full swing in most areas. You are ignorant about Cat Island. You seem to forget humans exterminating many wild cats. Your statement of killing the whole population has me wondering about your mental health. After all aren’t humans outside of Africa an invasive species. Your ignorance on removal of cats on certain islands is amazing. On one island where the cats were removed led to a rat explosion and rats eating eggs of endangered birds.
It's good to have a notion of the earth's ups and downs, you couldn't make a worst mistake at dating the figures on "Easter Island", the guessing age you mentioned is hundreds of thousands of years off mark. I'll just have to bear the bunch of lies that science comes up with.
A lot of bad false information here. Rapa Nui people on the island for 1-6 thousand years? And the building of Moi stopped because of European invasion? No wonder so many people are completely misinformed about everything
About Rapa Nui island: The people living there already destroyed the Island themselves before Jacob Roggeveen visited the Island.
Yea deforestation. The arrival of Europeans actually made it better.

That is strange cos their habitat has virtually disappeared. There are schemes in place to help them in Ireland and Scotland
