- So a little over a year ago I put all my sanders away in a box to see if I could cover all my sanding needs for a year just using two sanders - the #Mirka #Deros 150/5mm random orbital, and a Mirka #Deos orbital or ‘palm’ sander. These are my findings - and to make sure my judgement wasn’t clouded by potential long-term ownership, I’m giving these two sanders away, details below.
Full disclosure; I purchased these sanders direct from Mirka, but I did receive a discount; Mirka UK have kindly agreed to transfer the balance of the warranty (roughly 2 years) to the new owners, valid for UK & ROI residents only.

I'm 100% with you on the power switch thing. Like you, to me it's fundamental to be moving any sander around the workpiece (whatever it is) and doing that necessitates hand repositioning, sometimes in creative or weird ways, depending on the shape and access to it.
Thanks for a very straight forward report as usual. I recently purchased the deros and after 20 years of loyalty to Festool I thought I should venture into other brands. I have a routex sander and it is great for flushing off joints and heavy sanding. The one point I would make to you is the paddle switch is exactly the production line standards for furniture industry but in the form of compressed air power sanders. Holding the sander above the center line of the pad ensures even distribution of the downward pressure from the operator. This minimizes the risk of the edge of the disk digging in and causing swirl marks. With the routex sander using it holding by the handle it is very easy to create this condition as the pressure is orientated towards the inner edge of the disk under the handle position. The paddle switch is a soft start contactor which stops snatch when it turns on and allows the motor to ramp up to speed without putting undue torque on the motor and components.
“Call me precious….” Lol. I have a bunch of festool sanders I’m irritated with - I was considering going all Mirka - sounds like all these $500+ sanders have their own ridiculous issues. Nice review. Way more useful than a guy opening a box and doing the usual.
I’m a hobby woodworker/diyer It was your cheap tool vs Festool series that convinced me to upgrade my sander solution and since then I’ve ended up with an ets150/5 and a dtsc 400, as the cordless has served me well for the occasional time I need to take a sander to a fixed object somewhere.
Overall I’ve enjoyed every time I’ve used them since, they have been a no regret purchase.

I haven’t used the corded version and I could imagine that to be lighter, but the weight hasn’t been an issue for me as 99% gravity has that one for me.

I 100% agree with you on the paddle system I looked at the Mirka and the festool at a tool show, ended up with the Festool for that same reason
Which festool did you end up buy?
I put a down payment on a metabo 2.5 sander equivalent to the mirka deros. When I get it I will give you some feedback. I bought a cordless 150mm metabo sander with I think a 3 mm orbit which I'm very impressed with and a 125mm bosch cordless. I use a 36 cordless hikoki for dust collect and leave my heavy metabo vacuum at home for smaller jobs.
Great discussion. Working in automotive for years that style paddle trigger has been around on pneumatic sanders for decades and was never my favourite. I was going to buy a Mirka sander but then I realized it was cheaper to just pay someone to sand everything for me 👍

Just caught this video Peter and thanks for the mention😀👍. I am a former Deros owner and current Deos owner, as you said it’s a personal thing with the paddle and I don’t have an issue with it.
I’ve had the Festool ETS-EC 150/5 for over three years now and it’s a fantastic sander. Direct comparison with the Deros they are both great, but long term with the ETS I have noticed the extra weight in comparison to the Deros. For that reason I think I prefer the Deros over the ETS, especially now the reliability issues around the Deros appear to have been resolved 👍.
Cheers Leo! The ETS EC isn’t *much* heavier than the Deros, but it was noticeable when I handled one at the Festool visit. I quite liked that about it - for horizontal work, anyway! 😂👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop I can’t quite remember from my comparison video Peter but think it was around 200g, for horizontal work it probably feels more ‘planted’ if that makes sense, but when I sanded the front of the workshop back for a new finish, I was pleading for the Deros 😂😂

I have the Deros and love it - the paddle does not bother me, but I agree that it would be even better if they had the option to use the paddle or just to switch it on if you don't want to use the paddle.
I love the paddle control and find the deros excellent for getting surfaces and finishes flat.
Never used one but I agree with the problems possed by the paddle switch. 👍

I definitely see a lot of use for other sanders. In particular, I am seriously planning on getting a belt sander soon (mostly, for scribing trim), and I have often thought a linear sander would be great to allow me to sand profiled trim.
As for the paddle switch, I love it for reestablishing a radius on trim after I sand a joint smooth. I didn't think I would use it, but I get a LOT of value out of a switch I can easily feather, and now I have been using the mirka for 3 years, I honestly forget it even has a paddle switch, it is so automatic. I was worried about the durability too, as our last mirka at work had issues, but I have since just realized that the guy who had it was really rough on ALL his employer provided tools. Now I have my own, I have had no issues and actually have more cords than I started with without buying any.
I’ve been looking at the 3 m extractor. It to has a paddle type trigger as well. I’ve never owned this type of sander so I’m not familiar with the use. I do like the 3m sandpaper however it is top notch. Thanks for the different view point. I may go with the 3m to see if it’s the one for me.

Thanks to your previous sanding video I decided on the Festool ets ec 150/5 as my only sander. One year later I still love it. Very detailed finishing sanding can be done my hand, no machine needed

I use a Makita cordless. A decent corded sander would be good as the Makita performance can fade as the battery dies. Thanks for the review
I think I would agree with you on the paddle. With a sander it's helpful to be able to adjust your grip without it cutting out, I often like to hold the sander fairly lightly to save my poor raynaud's cursed fingers too. I"m not a fan of paddle switch angle grinders because they make you hold them in a set way which is not helpful when most jobs I do with a grinder I'm changing direction regularly.

My deos delta arrived yesterday, and i only used it for few hours so far. I was very skeptical about the paddle switch (nothing worse than angle grinders with one of those) but it is surprisingly comfortable and intuitive to use, i wouldn't have thought it. But then again it was the only decent option for someone who hates everything Festool with a passion. My other sanders are the old beast af a makita bo6040 and Mafell UVA. When either dies i think i will be going to Mirka

Thanks! That's the question, isn't it - perhaps there'll be a 'Which Sander Next' video to come! It is seriously a bit of a headscratcher - I've been evangelising the benefits of 150/5 sanders for years, but when you get down to it there just aren't that many around. The head says the Festool ETS EC, but the wallet says FCUK me, £600 for a sander! 😯 SO we'll have to see. Suggestions welcome... 👍

Hi Peter, As always a great video and your honest opinion, and if your not happy with the sander your not going to use it like you said why should you adjust the way you work to suit the tool , the tool should be made to suit the worker. I use a Black and Decker sander 350 watt , a Bosch orbital sander 375 watt and a Black and Decker "Mouse" sander 280 watt all 3 are good sanders. Hi Peter, informative video. As a weekend warrior woodworker/ DIY enthusiast I bought the Deros and Deos and have been really pleased with both. The fact that I have done re-decorated a whole house mainly with the Deros (wood work with the Deos) has made the 'flappy-paddle' and lightweight nature a real boon. The key thing is I think the quality of the Mirka sandpaper and with a quality vacuum, you get pretty much dust free environment for decoration prep and low dust doing the woodwork in the 'mancave'.

Took your advice and just have a Festool 125 random orbit and a Rts. Pretty much all I use unless the rotex is needed for heavy sanding. No need for the Mirka but wanted to say thanks for the weekly videos.

I do wonder if I could design a simple clip that holds the paddle in the on position and doesn’t get in the way, easily printable on a 3D printer, and comfortable.

Piece of masking tape worked pretty well, but you still have the on/off and up/down push button controls that I’m underwhelmed by. 🤷♂️👍

Hi, Peter great video as always. I use all my wood reclaimed from pallets to mostly auctioned furniture that I dismantled from 1930s hardwood tables or chests of draws, my point is I have to do a lot of sanding!! Erbauer 150mm and the smaller 125mm I have had for the past 2 years with no issue whatsoever you could have bought both for the price of one of the Mirkas and they have a 3-year guarantee!!! just don't drop one on your foot. You should test one yes I know they may be loud that why we have earplugs

iv had a dreos for 3 years. im a painter decorator with my own company. i do a lot stripping extior weatherboard houses. with 100s of hours of sanding over3 years . with in 1 year the board did fail. but was repaired quickly considering i live in new zealand. no issues since. and i do give it hell all the time. seems they have fixed the board issues in the newer models. and i think i call u "precious" when it comes to the paddle
Glad it’s working for you - I agree they’re great sanders. But if I’m chunking down a grand for the pair of them, and I don’t like how they work, I’m 100% prepared to say so. 👍
Had my Deros for 8 years now, after an initial failure which seemed a common fault it has worked extremely well. I was initially after a Festool but the sander plus vac plus goodies came at I price I couldn’t refuse via a local decorator centre. Can only speak for my self and I haven’t used the Festool equivalent but it has been a workhorse. The paddle on/off switch is a little Marmite but I’ve got used to it. I have some Makita sanders that do a good job but the Deros wins on finish and dust clearance. The big question is would I buy again - depends on price between the two manufacturers. Pretty interesting mate. Always the reason I never got one - or one of its "alikes". The paddle. It's a design straight from automotive air sanders (where mirka built their rep really). Great for plaster and fill work. Not for woodwork - for me anyway. If they just put a switch on the deros, they'd be a winner.

You can turn the paddle into a basic on/off switch via the app on your phone. But yes, that doesn't let you just toggle it on so you can wave it around and change grips.
I’ve had the deros for 10 years then it died so I got the metabo, as far as I can see they are identical, although the metabo is a good bit cheaper so I would go with that
Thanks for the videos. I very much enjoy them. I had a question regarding dust collection with the Mirka sanders. I have a Hilti dust extractor and wanted to pick up a couple sanders. The Festool customer service folks told me that my extractor would not work with their sanders since it does not have an adjustable suction dial - it only works at full suction. Have you use the Mirka sanders are full suction or do you need to dial back the suction for them to work well? Thanks
Depends what you’re sanding. If you can’t reduce the suction on the vac then the sander can get sucked onto the workpiece which increases the chance of ‘chatter’ marks on the surface. OTOH if you’re just de-nibbling or cleaning up glue lines then a vac on full isn’t an issue, generally. I usually have mine dialled to 11. 👍

Enjoyed the reviews of the Mirka's. I think if I had either I'd be gluing the paddle down, it'd annoy me that much, and just using the on/off switch behind it? Either that or the mains switch 🤦 Clearly not a perfect solution, that's why i've a Festool instead 😂
Hi Peter, I have the Metabo SXE version of this sander. Bought it early 2021 from ffx. I've used it for sanding plaster on walls, rough wood, fine finishing work, sanding paint off of metal, and even chucked a polishing mop on it. It's had quite a bit of use, and so far (touch wood) it's performing absolutely brilliant. I paid £320 for it, which was quite a saving from the mirka badged version at the time

Yep sanders should have a switch for extended use. I don’t care if moving my hands changes the finish, it stops my hands and arms cramping…
I have the Rotex 150 and Bosch 125 both have direct drive switches so I guess are interchangeable between orbital and random orbital sanders. Rotex has the 5mm stroke and in direct drive with granat 60 grit material disappears, poof 💨. Turn it down with a fine paper lovely and smooth. Bosch also excellent, but much more noisy

Great review. Not signing up as I somehow don't think you'll be tosing them across the pond. For big flat surfaces i still love my PC brushless, 5" ROS and for weid surfaces, my old battery Ryobi mouse sander with the broken off switch works great. Just finished several display stands for my wife's craft stuff. Used both extensively. Lots of different carpentry skill used, and then she wanted me to buarry it all under white paint. Oh well.😂

I love the Mirka gold sander discs, but I'm with you on the sanders absolutely hate the switch as well. Poor relation to the festool rotex and Makita equivalent. I really dislike these palm style sanders and just prefer a two hands on the sander grip, they just remind me of a finish sander, didn't like the air version of them either.
Watch it stop working tomorrow when i use it but my metabo version has not missed a beat and I’ve put it through some fairly hefty work. 2 1/2 years and still going strong

Isn't it all down to what you stick onto the pads? Like other power tools (saws), a good blade on a mediocre tool can make a world of difference. 👍🏻
Actually, no, not with sanders. I’ve never seen a scrap of difference between abrasives, whereas the same discos different sanders like night and day. 🤷♂️👍
have you figured out what it is about good sanders that makes them good? I have been looking for a deal on sanders, as I have a work provided deros and I really don't want to drop 600 on my own as I accumulate tools, but by the same token, I don't know how to actually look at a sander like say, the bosch get75-6N (way cheaper), and know whether to expect something that is comparable to a festool or mirka, or comparable to a battery powered makita you got out of a combo pack.
Not that i was in the market for mirka i did try the paddle system on the sealey you previously tested and unfortunately it was faulty and sent it back for a refund but was glad for this in the end as i struggled with the paddle system as you did. Now an owner of a bosch professional GET 75-150 a cheaper rotex but equally a do it all sander if you dont need to do details. Thanks for the video. Do you prefer your festool to the mirka?
Thanks! Rolex and totes-alike are great do-it-all sanders but tend to be compromised on weight. I prefer the overall low-profile of the Mirka/ Sealey/ Hyvst than the Festool ETS these days. I’ve moved on! 🤷♂️👍
Rotex 90 works for me with its dual heads, but that's mainly decorating stuff.
Had an RO90 myself, great sander, it just didn’t use it enough in the general woodworking. 🤷♂️👍
I think themerka deros could be a great sander but it would be better served by ditching the paddle and going to an easily accessible speed controller wheel. How can you put any force on a sander when there's a paddle controller under your hand? You might just need to push hard for a second and all of a sudden the sander has gone into overdrive.

Here in Germany the Metabo is more expensive than the Mirka Deros. My Deros is actually waitng for it's first use. For smaller pieces I use the Bosch the tiny Bosch GEX 12V-125 and I really like it

Potential reason for the power plug layout: Different plug configurations, for different power grids, and the varying voltages, and frequencies that those variations brings into the design problems.
I don't personally have a problem with the paddle on the Deros, but could you glue it down and just use the switch?
Tried that with masking tape - turns out I don’t like the switches either! 🤷♂️

The £90 Dewalt random orbit sander has a switch, is extremely comfortable to hold, an internal counterweight system to offset the vibration, a decent stroke for a 5 inch model, great dust extraction even with a simple dust bag and is quiet. Having used one for a couple of years I can't imagine a £600 Mirka is any better and certainly not worth nearly 7 times the price. I think people get hooked on high-end brands and there's nothing wrong with that, but a high-end brand name like Mirka or Festool doesn't guarantee you a better tool. In fact it seems like the more you spend, the more likely the product is to have some daft design decisions or omissions.

Ashley...the main benefit of the mirka is the dust extraction..it beats everything else hands down when it says dustless it is....I agree that it's massively overpriced but for me the time saved on potential clean up times it will pay for itself...I admit I was a sceptic until I got one..the abranet pads last for ages too
@@10MinuteWorkshop That's the one. The DCW210 is identical but cordless, I have both and they're excellent. No dust with a good extractor either.
@@davewright9312Personally I find the dewalt can be almost "dustless" with a good extractor. It has an internal fan that adds suction and forces dust through the extraction port. You'll always get some fine dust in the air with certain jobs but the dust extraction was one of the reasons I bought it.

**EDIT Two Not sure about the power pin layout, but in the last year or so they've made available rewirable tool end plugs, so you can make your own leads up, so as far as cynicism goes, that's not Mirkas motive to sell more leads.
Had my Deros three years, hundreds of. hours with full days on it, only ever had an issue with the power lead. Only ever seen wood workers have switch issue. Just bought a Leros-S, probably has 10hrs on it, sands beautifully compared to other 9" machines as it's also random. Will be using it on some woodwork at some stage, does not have paddle switch.

@@10MinuteWorkshop yeah my field is coatings. I ramped up my woodwork game because it was a real struggle to find a decent joiner interested in building to specs where I'd be dealing in microns for finishes.. in as much I'm in several forums and groups dealing with vatious substrates and never ever came across the switch issue, the Deros was always highly recomended over Festool and other similar tier brands.
My hypothesis is that there may have been compounding factors of bad batch components and differences in practices, where in other trades a lighter touch is fundamental. Not saying carpenters are rough, but maybe inclined to be harder on the gear.
I'm,using the leros primarily for redec work on domestics but workshop wise I'm keen to utilise it for the likes of cabinets figuring that,a bigger pad should run truer. I think with a thicker interface pad you could even putnit to use in boat building and auto body work at the lower grit end of the game to cutnout a lot of area quickly.
I'm going to try it with some 100mm diamond dry polishing pads (like four or five at a time) and see how it goes on masonry. I use 125 & 150mm diamond discs on the Deros, ideally I'd be using Swiflex 8 hole discs but hard to get outside of UK/EU, so I drill the vent holes into the thicker dry pads youd see a tiler use on an angle grinder or to fit a planetary head floor grinder. 50-400 grit is generally ample but anything over say 10m² is a real pain with a small machine.
NB: Leros-S is short boom for tight spaces so good ergonomics for mid sized articles compared to full size for large planes

I agree that you shouldn’t have to change the way you work to fit a tool. Especially for a non-specialized one, and even more so for something this pricey. I must say I laughed at the sarcastic “you won’t believe what happened next…!”

Hey Peter. It looks like that you did not yet use the ETS EC 150 from Festool. This is the sander you are probably looking for. Do you know this sander? I made great experiences
with the product, much better than the Mirka Deros!
I used one at the Festool open day I attended and it was a lovely machine - and the logical choice. But yikes, so expensive! 😯🤷♂️👍
Wouldn’t it be fair if you mention the ETS EC in a future video? U just mentioned all the other Festool sanders in this video without mention this one. Just to inform people about a good/better alternative from a product perspective.

I prefer the Festool ETS EC, you should buy and test it as well. It really worth it, trust me!
I have watched reviews of these in various channels I watch from various countries, I just dont get the price level, as I am just a hobby woodworker. It seems to be an elite club status to have certain things. I always ask myself if the product is three times the price of what I would normally purchase is the result or experience with it three times better. Its just a sander. The Sand paper is highly important, to last a long time and allow for good dust collection.
I’d politely disagree about the abrasive; I’ve never really seen any difference between them, other than the more costly ones tend to last a bit longer. But the size, weight, noise, vibration, dust extraction, longevity - these are all tool-related not abrasive related, and I’d say they’re far more important to the comfort and health of the user than the sandpaper you end up using. 👍
I am only a hobby woodworker, so I do not feel much benefit to many of the items you listed for the additional cost. This is my cost/use factor only doing my hobby when I have time and not having to Sand everything I make. I do get the good tools though as I notice my motivation to start and complete projects goes up when I have purchased a new tool, as the fun factor goes up, and hobbies should be fun. I have found the 3M pads give better dust removal especially on the very fine pads, which I assume are generating finer particles.@@10MinuteWorkshop

Nicest possible way to top up a review: they are get given away for free... sums it all up! 🎉 🥳 💥 sometimes, many times, it can be really difficult to make a choice of power tools in between all the prices, specs and brands available but I would rank sanders (together with pilar drills where there isn't that much choice and one either gets something cheap and crap or pays a fortune for a good one and there aren't that many of these around...) the most difficult tool group to chose from if one has got a tight budget and can only buy two main sanders (I get by with a Metabo SXE450TURBOTEC 240v 6" Dual Orbit Random Orbital Sander + cheap BOSCH Professional GSS 23 AE orbital sander and unable to afford a Rotex 150 I make do with an inexpensive belt sander...) whereas re jointers the hated Domino beats everything else fair and square as long as one can stretch to one or both of them...
Thanks! Yes, having championed 150/5 sanders for years, I’m realising that there just aren’t that many of them around. I also had the Metabo 450 dual orbit sander, then picked up a used Festool ets 150/5 which was night and day a better machine, so I couldn’t go back to the Metabo, having moved on from the ets. Very good point about no middle ground - as is becoming the norm, it’s either supermarket specials or top tier tools! 👍

As a starter these machines are out of my budget. I have to use my trusty old Makita.
Absolutely nothing wrong with Makita sanders. I've had Makita palm sanders , 1/3 sheet and 1/2 sheet orbital sanders for years. They work well, have never let me down and leave an excellent finish. I do wear a vibration absorbing glove if I have a shed-load of sanding to do though!
I bought 2 Deros when covid hit. Only after 1.5 years, both sanders broke. I took them in for "warranty" and they charged me $259 to fix both of them. I honestly don't know why they call it a "3 year warranty". Only the motor was covered in one of the sanders. I honestly will never buy a mirka product ever again.
That was the general experience of a few people I know and what prompted this long term test.
That paddle switch is clearly a case of engineering a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Such a shame, I'm sure many will have no issue with it, any honestly I'm not in the market for such a sander, but I do find examples of this type of innovation for innovation's sake often results in a flawed product.
Still, it's an 'Unique Selling Point' for the marketeers.
I suspect it’s more of a case of it being a solution that worked well for their air powered sanders used in their (much larger) automotive divisions. But workshops aren’t production lines. 🤷♂️👍

Certainly does seem like the on/off paddle is more brand gimmick than innovation.
To be fair it can also used to control the speed, and the paddle is a standard on the industrial air sanders that Mirka have vast experience in.
I just cannot get excited about Mirka sanders. As far as I can see these are no real advantages over the Festool equivalents, and like you I hate the paddle switches
The low profile of the deos looks like it’s be easier to use on vertical surfaces than the Festool rts 400. I’ve recently bought the rtsc 400 with adapter. The flappy paddles would annoy me also
I have the deros and have considerable experience in using air fed DA sanders and I have to say the paddle switch doesn't cause any problems at all ..on the air fed sanders there is a type of paddle switch under the handle..I am quite comfortable gripping the sander with the paddle switch under my hand
