  • Come and get a FULL EXPLORE of the Sideling Hill Turnpike Tunnel.
    In the 1880’s, as part of the modified and amended Pennsylvania Main Line of Public Works legislation, a railway route was in its construction phase along an east west corridor on the lower portion of Pennsylvania to cope with the impassibility of the Allegheny Mountains.
    A total of 4.5 miles of tunnel was dug through seven mountains to achieve this goal, but ended up never getting used due to the already completed and efficiency of the canals.
    Welcome to the location formally named in 1968, the 13 mile stretch of the abandoned portion for America’s First Super Highway, the Abandoned Turnpike Tunnels.

    my brother went to college and we used to get off at the Bedford exit so I’m talking about I guess early 60s or something. I don’t remember the rest stops any name like Howard Johnson’s or anything like that I think maybe they were run by the turnpike, I don’t know, I really enjoy what you’re doing. That’s cool.

    Great video. This is the most thorough walk-through I’ve seen.
    A little about the equipment:
    The big fans are pressurization fans.
    The area above the roadway where you guys walked with all of the holes and slots is the air plenum into which the fans blow air.
    The round holes in the tunnel ceiling are for the lights, and the rectangular slots are for air to enter the tunnel from the plenum above.

    The open area was the location of the Cove Valley Howard Johnsons . My mother and grandmother both worked there. When the new section of turnpike was built they closed this restaurant and build the current Sidling Hill plaza.

    Can you do a video about Centralia, PA? I’ve always wanted to visit there, but just haven’t had the time. One of the root reasons for creating this channel was for those who are unsure about a site visit, cannot make the trip, are incapable of the explore (age/illness), and so people know what they hell they are looking at when they get there. None of that "I think this tunnel was a nuclear silo" when it was just a turnpike hole. ;) Thanks for subbing.

    i heard that the sideling hill tunnel was gonna be used for a railroad once but the plan for the railroad was was abandoned since both rays hill tunnel and sideling hill tunnel were left to slowly crumble now the interiors of these tunnels have some creepy quality to them neither of the tunnels have lights so a flashlight is required

    • @ODDySEEy

      @@ODDySEEy Well, they never laid track. By then the attempts at building the railroad went under. Out of the entire right of way that eventually became the Turnpike, only about 2-3 miles outside of Somerset, PA were eventually used by a railroad. The short lived Pittsburgh, Somerset & Westmoreland Railroad.

      @@ODDySEEy Love your videos, but your background information on the South Penn Railroad is a little off. It was only related to the Main Line in that the first incarnation of the South Penn was going to have a connection to the Allegany-Portage Railroad, but that never came to fruition due to that project being abandoned. The charter was later taken over by William H. Vanderbilt, who was irate that the Pennsylvania Railroad bought a railroad in his territory in New York and was looking for a way to get back at them, along with investors Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick who were looking for cheaper shipping rates brought on by competition since the PRR had a monopoly. The project was abandoned 3 years in due to Vanderbilt realizing how much of a money sink it had become, and also from fears brought up to him by JP Morgan of what the competition may do to their profits. They struck a deal where the PRR ended up with the South Penn, but never opted to do anything with it.
      You were also very near an interesting abandoned leftover of the South Penn. Not far from the western portal of the tunnel, along Oregon Road by the CCC Camp, is a sign for the RR Arch Trail, which leads to a large (you can walk through it slightly hunched) stone culvert over a creek just sitting in the middle of the woods in a valley. They were in the process of filling in the valley for the railroad grade, and the project was halted before they covered the stone culvert. Check it out if you're ever back in the area!

    • @sinistarxx
      @sinistarxx 4 года назад

      @@RedoubtProductions1754 That railroad actually finished and made use of one of the original planned tunnels of the South Penn, the Quemahoning Tunnel. You can still see the remains of the eastern portal of it just off off the road from mile marker 106. The South Penn story is quite fascinating, there's a guy named Russell Love who has done extensive research on the original right away and what can still be seen of it, posts loads of maps and has put a few books out on the subject.

    • @RedoubtProductions1754
      @RedoubtProductions1754 4 года назад +1

      @@sinistarxx Yeah, the PWS was finished. But I think it really only occupied the Southern grade for a few miles around Quemahoning...which unfortunately that tunnel is due to be destroyed with PennDOTs plans to widen the turnpike through there. Most of the PWS followed its own grade over Laurel Mountain. I'm pondering if it actually connected for a brief time with the Indian Creek Valley, but I haven't found any maps that confirm it.
