Join me LIVE on Zoom later this month (July 22-26th, 2024) as I teach a metacognition course for teens (13-19). This is great information. Now I know why my teenage nephew texted me at 3 am. It is imperative to help teenagers get a hold of their sleep for their own good. Thank you.
Hi all. My new book '10 Things Schools Get Wrong' is now available. David Bott (my co-author) and I are hosting 3 free 'book launch' webinars starting Feb 17th. The first one will deal with Digital and Distance Learning. You can register at lme.global/webinars. I hope you can join us ... they will be a lot of fun!
Thank you for this interesting and informative video. My 13 son and I have been arguing about when he should go to sleep. This video compelled him to come to an agreement on a good sleep time and wake up. Thank you !!
Wow. Very interesting. I knew about sleep cycles, but never knew there was a difference between early and late ones. Gotta rethink my sleep strategy ;)
As a teenager I want to sleep all day, after in night I sleep a lot and really deep, and it's so hard for me to wake up, my mom every morning gets so angry cuz I just cant wake up... sometimes I hate to be a teenager.
Thank you Dr. Horvath. As a guest speaker, I am sharing your video + excellent graphics to a my son's Gr.8 class. Any additional points/resources that might help them adopt better practices? Thanks - DaveG.
I apologize for taking so long to reply! Yes, we have many resources for them, in fact I have a comprehensive course aimed at helping 9th graders and beyond take agency over their thinking, learning and self-management practices. Let me know if you have any questions: www.lmeglobal.net/learn
I applied the knowledge I obtained after watching this video and decided to try to get a proper night sleep supported with the recommended advice. Keeping in mind that high schoolers should regularly get 8-10 hours of sleep. I generally got around 6 hours of sleep the majority of the school days which is still more than some teens. So no it's not a drastic change of sleep alteration but it's a start. I was intrigued to see if there were self changes throughout the day. I personally would recommend other teens to try to go to sleep earlier. I think many like myself have disrupted sleep schedules. Readjusting to the school schedule, there's no room for staying up late and sleeping in. Staying up late has enforced my bad habits like procrastinating with homework. As well as not studying strong enough or getting a good rest before a test the next day. Like many, our phones have become a huge disruption and distraction. And therefore have impacts on my school or daily performance. I did notice changes and feel more energetic throughout the day. I advise others to attempt a few nights of getting at least an hour more of sleep. I see no negative effects from not going to sleep earlier.
Imagine lack of nutrition and sleep, and working on the weekends. Man sometimes I envy the ones who complain of having a simple life, if only I had that privilege...
8-9 hours is required for all people (regardless of age) to get both restorative and consolidation sleep. We know many people who sleep less and swear they are okay - but they all show cognitive improvement when they increase their sleep. I know it's tough - but routine, routine, routine is the best way to push that sleep up!
Here's a trick, start any video for say 1 hour long. Sleep after starting it. While sleeping you will hear the video which you turned on. But you will understand something else. Brain connects your deepest secrets with the environment while sleeping.
you briefly mentioned that it wouldn't make sense if our neurons keep growing bc it wouldn't fit, so it goes through depression to clean out uneeded. so does that mean memory is limited? we have a limited amount of storage in our memory?
That is awesome thinking! We still think memory is unlimited at this point - there are two reasons. First, memories become more efficient with time (less brain to maintain). Second, we think older memories may be stored non-neuronally: although we don't know where they go, theories range from interfering magnetic fields to musculature (some crazy theories there). And you're right - the brain wouldn't explode with synapses (I was being a bit cheeky) - it would become over saturated with noise - this includes disjointed synapses as well as free radicals and over-tapped astrocytic glycogen. Without the clean-up/reset of sleep, you would die most likely within 5 days (there is a disorder called Fatal Familial Insomnia where this happens - people literally can not sleep and it is fatal). I love your thinking - keep it up!
@@JaredCooney ah interesting. Thank you, your videos are very insightful! I want to know, what do you think about IQ or g factor? Do you think it can be increased?
@@Victor-oy8bj I don't just think it - I know it! For every year of school you attend, your IQ will increase 1-5 points. G will remain the same - but that's because G is a statistic that looks at correlations. Importantly, though - neither IQ nor G really matter all that much (in fact, G is not real: it's just a statistical tautology with no biological underpinning). I am working on a documentary now that looks into this!
@@JaredCooney yeah i saw that study i agree. hmm although i think g factor may be important. the documentary sounds interesting. I would love to hear what you know about intelligence types. Do you think there are types of intelligence?
As a teen this is very educational but scary cuz as a student athlete who take all AP classes so I sleep 5-6hrs daily and I hope it doesn’t negatively impact me 😬😬😬

Randomly picked a video to show my teen why sleep is important, and yours was perfect! Thanks!
Already sent this to my Year 12 son (here's hoping he'll watch it!). Thanks Jared - a 4.9 presentation!!
I hope that's out of 5 :-)
You gotta send this to the school not your son the school is the one that won't let your son sleep

This was really clearly presented. Thanks very much. Helps me feel better about my home educated daughter not getting up before 10am!
May have to rethink our routine. Thanks for the insight

Is it normal as a 13 year old, to get 14 hours of sleep on Fridays. I think this might be because I only get 7 hours on weekdays but idk.
I have to wake up at 4 since I am in boarding school how can I stay healthy
you cant really do much there, unfortunately... that would mess with your inner caveman timer
Is taking nap ok?
