firmware is the software that tells the hardware (the phone) what to do and how to act. It's basically the base programming that controls everything. Updating firmware can fix bugs and add new features. On the N97, you can update it either from the phone itself via the SW application or connect it to a PC and use the software suite that comes with it.
The N97 mini is released with v2.0 firmware already installed on the 23rd of october, we can expect the update for the normal N97 a few days after that.
Will they add smooth rotation theme effect also? Because if you have to turn on the theme effect in order to activate the kinetic scrolling, and the rotation (fade out and fade in) is still the same, the slow speed of rotation will continue to annoy you. I always turn the theme effect off because of that reason, too.
You can't find the SW application? Its in the "applications" menu for me. If you can't use that/find it then use the Ovi software suite that came on the CD with the phone. That can update the firmware just as easily.
I was hoping Nokia would add kinetic scrolling everywhere. Good job. IMO having multiple home screens sounds kinda interesting but don't know how it would take up ram and affect the overall performance.
@DareKGenesis I`ve used my n97 mini with opera and it wasnt running out of memory even with few tabs open in browser unless they were flash heavy - performance with things like 3d photo browser from beta labs was awesome too, even hundreads of photos didnt make it slow down, running browser, some, media gallery in background and some other things wasnt problem either. Just make sure you dont put some bugged widgets on main screen. If you keep phone memory disk free phone will be really smooth.
omegaice8 I have one Iphone 3G and one N97, and I agree with you about your comment Voice over 3G, etc... but I have to say that I'm disapointed with my new N97, the softwares reboots 2 or 3 times per day without reason, the lock unlock mechanism for the TouchScreen sometimes cant comand the software and the touchscreen gets activated in my pocket, the facial sensors that should recognize face getting close sometimes doesnt works good and my face press the HOLD ON button..
I dont have one but I think its like this: there is n97 and n97 slim; They are two different phones. Then there is two different firmwares. I think any n97 and n97 slim can use this new firmware.

I need that for office productivity (PBX). Nimbuzz and Fring fail because they have to make a connection to their server first (what for???). Please Nokia, firmware update 2.0 must bring (back) the native SIP client.

omegaice8, I own N97 and I'm dissapointed by it, for the unavailability of native SIP client. I thought Nokia were going to fix it. I did my research before buying it, and I knew it didn't have native SIP client (unlike E71). But I was attracted by the screen size and the fact that it has newer version of S60 platform (5th in N97 vs. 3rd in E71). With all that consideration I chosed N97, and _believed_ that Nokia was going to add SIP client soon. So far Nokia has been silent on that.
just updated my nokia n97 in white using the nokia software update. i recived a text from my nokia saying that the update is ready to be istalled. i'm in the uk and got the update, my network is on orange! and i got it so.. might be out for every one worth a try to see if you can get the update.
the difference of the two is just the case... it's a matter of style if you're the nice light free spirited type of person... or serious, and loves black.
@DareKGenesis try visiting nokia beta labs, use updater from nokia site and check if your service provider uses latest firmware, try things like n-desk or spb mobile shell . If your phone is slow just do hard reset, delete all apps you dont need that instal on phone main memory and set default install dir to mass memory and not phone memory.

That means, solution like Nimbuzz Fring Truphone are not an option because they route the call to their proxy first. Second: about the "beauty" of symbian: anybody can make a program. I don't know if I'd call it "beauty". It's a _must_ and it's actually a "feature" of any OS, not just symbian.

you can get it from the site..download the SW updater from the nokia site..then follow the instructions..thats it..i just upgraded mine..and its working just fine..

N97 in 1st months aftter launch got crappy firmware and lacked app so its only strenght was really ergonomic \keyboard and design, but nowdays its no mroe true. Nokia made AWESOME improvements to this phone and its one of best on market nowdays, unmatched keyboard ergonomy, system which no one would guess is run on symbian and ngage support. Check for yourself

The day I watched the N97 pre launch video. I saw the nice visual qwerty on screen keyboard, showed you how fast you could txtd without opening the device.... I purchased mine and Nokia had stolen the virtual keyboard back. 8-( Without telling us? In all the years of owing a mobile, I have never seen anyone advertising a product, then remove part of the OS. Well done Nokia 10/10 for pure cheek! Yes my nokia man said something like that nokia n97-2 has no optic cover, it's a slim version and it has no d-pad on the left of the keyboard, this firmware is for the n97 in general the capacities are the same so the guy in the video with numbers 1 and 2 just separates the phones, anyway the slim version is not released yet at least to my country but even if it does i still prefer d-pad and lens cover even if the phone is bigger don't care i love that phone i sold my iphone 3g to get it!

Apples iPhone works much nicer and smoother, you can't just deny that. This nokia, however, has much better value then the iPhone does. It has more functionality. iPhone performs the things it contains PERFECt, while the nokia brings much more things and does it well. That's how I like at it. I'm no apple fanboy, but you simply can't deny those things. The iPhone over the N97 anytime, but people that don't have that much bucks to spend on a damn phone have a good buy when they get the n97.

finally crisp and clear favorite contacts pictures in the homescreen. Now they are very blurred which is hideous.

Nokias Softwares looks like a windows 3.11 style, why is so difficult to make a beautifull design for it?

when i try to update my n97 it says that V 11.0.021 is the most current version why is this?
