CHOPPING SORGHUM 2023 CLAAS JAGUAR 970

Welcome back! In this video we return to the countryside around the Monastier Social Stable to fly over their fields to see the sorghum chopping. At work we find a Claas Jaguar 970.
The Claas Jaguar 970 is a forage harvester, produced by the company of the same name, starting from 2020. It features a 16.5-litre MAN six-cylinder diesel engine capable of delivering 790 horsepower. It can travel at a speed of 40 km\h on the road. It weighs 13.5 tons.
Claas, John Deere, Fendt and Steyr tractors are used for transport.
The trailers are three-axle Bossini and three-axle Zaccaria.
This day's chopped sorghum will be used to fuel the stable's biogas plant.
Sorghum, or sorghum, is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family (Poaceae). The characteristics of the main types of sorghum are closely correlated with their final destination. Various groups of cultivars and hybrids are distinguished.
An important food crop in Africa, Central America and Southern Asia, it is the fifth most important cereal after corn (or maize), rice, wheat (or wheat) and barley. India, Mexico, Nigeria and the United States, the latter being leaders in the sector, supply approximately two thirds of world production which amounts to 59 million tonnes produced on 42 million hectares.
Among food crops, it is one of the most resistant to drought and heat, a characteristic that makes it particularly interesting in arid regions, where it constitutes one of the population's staple foods.
Sorghum represents a valid alternative to corn, in the production of grain and fodder, in those non-irrigated areas and with scarce or erratic summer rainfall where it is not reasonable to expect good results from a corn crop. In particularly arid environments, in the Sahel in Africa and in Asia (China, India) with annual rainfall of less than 200-250 mm, it is often replaced by millet and panicle which can ripen in 2-3 months, providing yields of 3- 5 quintals per hectare, with limited investments and in light soils, often not very fertile or degraded.
The surface area planted with grain sorghum in Italy in 2011 exceeded 42,000 hectares, almost entirely located in the Centre-North. 78% of the area cultivated with sorghum is in Emilia-Romagna, 16% in central Italy, mainly in the Marche. Yields vary from 13 quintals per hectare in Molise to 83 quintals in Emilia-Romagna. National production is 3 million quintals.
The cultivated area has increased by 25% in the last ten years[30]. In 2010, fodder sorghum occupied 7,600 hectares with a production of 300,000 tonnes (FAO data).
To meet the growing need for bioethanol, satisfied mainly with imports, experiments relating to different production, industrial and organizational models have been conducted throughout the national territory for some time. As regards sorghum, the greatest potential would exist in Northern Italy, where rainfall during the vegetative development period would be sufficient to guarantee good production yields, while in Mediterranean climate regions support from irrigation would be necessary[31]. The same considerations are valid for the cultivation of biomass sorghum for the production of biogas.
