THE BEST cover version of Patti Smith's Dancing Barefoot! I recorded this off an LP from 1988. There are a couple of pops and crackles, but that's okay. It's not an LP without them. I was lucky enough to see The Feelies in concert on February 23, 1990 at Max's On Broadway in Fells Point (Baltimore), Maryland. They performed two shows that night and I'm glad I saw the second show because they didn't play Dancing Barefoot during the first show. What a night!!
A Feelies Fan was Here. Peace.
The Feelies were insanely under-rated!! I love them. I love this cover. All hail The Feelies!
I think this is my favorite cover of all time.
it's that good.
The Feelies are disgustingly underrated.
I think it is even better than the original which is already very good
Feelies were as tight as a mouses ear! Lol.
"Paint it Black" by the Feelies is also legendary.
And VU's "what's going on". The Feelies are a great cover band. :D
This song introduced me to The Feelies, and the love affair with their music has never stopped...one of my all time favorites, and it's a cover!!!
My introduction to the band also and still to this day play them almost daily.
When I was in HS in the 80s this was a radio-only 45 rpm and almost impossible to find. You had to hope your local used record shop had a good relationship with the local progressive rock radio station. I used to lose my sh*t every time it was played and crank it way the hell up. Once file sharing sites like Napster made tracks like this available, it was THE first song file I downloaded, and it had a skip in it. Did not care. It was clean in every other way, and I still listen to it to this day, skip and all.
The best American indie band of their time.
I received a Feelies demo CD(with this song and Higher Ground)
from a college radio station in 1990. I've been a fan ever since.
This is my favorite version of this song (sorry Patti) I listened to many times on College road trips.
Thanks for sharing this hidden charm. Guitar team, drummer and voices make The Feelies a true gem in American rock.
i am physically disabled by a car accident 18 years ago since then, music is my support, thanks :-)
I'm Here for you too in spirit... From a fellow Feelies fan,.... Prayers, Love and Support☮❤✝♾
This was a popular track to spin at William & Mary's WCWM college radio station back around 1990, which is where I first heard it--and later wound up spinning it myself. :-))
Beautiful song played by the most gifted group
Great cover of the Patti Smith original. Better than the original by a wide margin, IMO.
One of the clerks at a record store I used go to in high school in the mid 80s told me this song was made available only to radio stations when it was released, and not the general public. Before the internet it was almost impossible to get a hold of it. One of the bands' best performances on record. Why they made it so hard to get is a mystery to me.
Yep, I heard it on WHFS when it came out, and I couldn't find a copy anywhere. It drove me nuts. It's so easy to find music now.
@@lisagd22 Yup, WHFS. I went out looking for it the same day I heard it and was lucky enough to find it on vinyl.
I saw them do this live! I adore The Feelies! One of thee most underrated bands ever.
one of the underrated band ever..they are so fckin good!!
They need to put this in the next season of Stranger Things so this cover gets the love it deserves.
Thanks man.
Saw The Feelies open for Lou Reed on the New York Tour in 1989. They gave us a Feelies cassette at the door with this, Higher Ground, and What Goes On. Never saw any of those songs available anywhere but youtube. Lost the cassette years ago.
Jim??
@@rachel112263 Only my family calls me Jim.
I have never heard this song before ten minutes ago. I listened to Patti Smith's version first (for the first time) and then I immediately found this one on youtube minutes later. Different styles, this one is blissful, however i prefer Patti's. About to go further into the Feelie's catalog tho!
this is Superb
I remember hearing this on Kristy Michael's night show on 93.7 The Coast (Hampton Roads, VA) in the early '90s.
Great freaking song. I love the Feelies because of this cover.
bad ass cover.
It was also released as a single-sided promotional Flexi disk in an issue of The Bob magazine.
bjorn2run
Yeah..that's how I got it!
Definitely, how lucky you got to see them!
I got this one on a gift flexidisc from The Bob Magazine on the 90's!
Love The Feelies
Thank you so very much for this video. I'd never heard this if not for you. 🌷
When WHFS ruled!!!
Yes.
Yaaaaassss!!! When they changed format, that was the beginning of the end of my radio listening days.
With the best in new music, this is WPSU, State College, University Park.
Always played that station id over this intro.
with a brilliant interjection, iggy pop
thank you so much 4 this
This band never ceases to amaze me... Unbelievable.
Wow!
Love this version, bought it when it came out way back when..... great live band....
Ah Max's. Seen many great shows there in the early 90's. I also have this 12". Bought it for this cover and glad that it came with "Higher Ground"
Great cover!!!
+Joan costitx...yep this is a great cover.... I am going to see the Feelies in concert at the 9:30 club in washington DC tonight.....I've seen them perform live 2 others times
lovely cover
Excellent track
Super. I love this cover. I love original, also recommend First Aid Kit who sand it to Patti Smith at an awards show, also U2! Great song sung different ways :)
The first First Aid Kit song I heard was Fireworks one day at Starbucks. It gave me the same kind of feeling I get when I listen to this song ^.
Love the cover. Thx, Rachel!
Joya 📀🔥
I saw them at McCarter theatre at Princeton. Then , it was off to Hoboken.....
very amazing
Very cool, thanks for this!!!!
awesome!
Nice tune!!
Wunderbar
This the first time I've heard this cover and I posted it to my Facebook "Tributes" group. Love it!
Me too! If you watch this whole video, I have two set lists, both from that show. The first was from the 7:00 pm show; the second was from the 11:00 show where they played Dancing Barefoot. It definitely sounded EXACTLY like this. The guitar sound was incredible!! I was standing literally 6 inches from the band - front row of course!!
I found Pattis cover of teen spirit some min. ago.... THAT was a good cover. ^^
merci à Radio Monte Carlo de m'avoir fait découvrir ce morceau hier ! géant
miuy buenos, me encantan The Feelies!
I totally agree. Thanks for tuning in.
I like it but my favorite cover is by The Mission. The Feelies are a great band though. I was able to see them in '88 at the Fillmore right after their Only Life album was released - great show!
There are a lot of covers of this song. U2 did it in '89, and that version was included in the soundtrack to Two Girls and a Guy. Simple Minds has a decent cover of it too.
Liked it a lot
Patti Smith's original is potentially as beautiful as this Feelies version but isn't because it's spoiled by the 80's drum production. As usual the Feelies have an ear for what's very good and make it brilliant. The same is true of their version of Love Tractor's "Fun To Be Happy".
sounds like the byrds❤
Had no idea they'd done this
Who is the vocalist? It doesn't sound like Brenda! She sang at a higher register. Have always loved this enigmatic band since I saw them open for REM in Buffalo 1985. Best live was Boston's Paradise early 1990 or late 1989. Wish they used her singing more! She slides in so perfectly here! No knock on Glenn but he could force his vocals and they could have used her. But what makes this band a precious jewel is their determination to do it in their zig-zag quirkiness, often only playing near Haledon NJ on holidays when the paint store was closed, often changing their name or members. Must have made marketing types nuts! So who is the vocalist? Compare her to Speed the Plow, where Brenda sings. Not the same. Thanks for posting this. I'd been searching for it for a while...
The Midnight Golfer Sounds like Bill Million, who typically sings in a higher range than Glenn Mercer.
This is definitely Brenda. I stood right in front of her and watched her sing it. WOO HOO!!!
Thanks, Axe. I think the guitar sound is incredible!
Qué buenos, joder
Y que lo digas
@@hominido67 jajajjaja
@ezrametz -Sure was. Lou played NY start to finish, took a break, played a bunch more songs. Good show and a cool old theatre.
Yeah, what Go Getter said!!!
Saw them open for Lou Reed on his "New York" album tour (around '89) in DC. Great show, and this was definitely a highlight of their set. Is Sedan on the 7pm set list Neil Young's Sedan Delivery?
same here, lou turned us on to feelies, (as well as smithereens, another fav...)
Ok, the guitarre solo was good. ^^
Thx ! But... who's singing ? This definitively the Feelies's sound but I don't recognize Glenn Mercer's voice.
+Stephane J should be Brenda Sauter, the bass player. She sang it when I saw them at the Warner theatre in DC
+lonestar3 I love her voice on this song.
le petit reptile qui me sert de frigo vient de s'éteindre à bon escient dira ma femme
@lonestar3 I think I was at that show. Was it at the Warner Theater?
Was this ever recorded on an album?
Saw Patti do this live 4 or 5 years ago. Concrete Blonde does it too. Better. I do like this though.
Is this Brenda’s only lead vocal?
Yung Wu and Speed the Plough are some of the other bands where she sang lead vocal.

@@rachel112263 thank you! Got the Wild Carnations vinyl last record store day! 💚
Je préfère la version original "Patti Smith " puis la reprise du groupe The Mission.
je suis d'accord, il n'y a pas de comparaison a la sans pareil Patti Smith!!!!!!
I like good covers, but sry: I really dont get why this should be bether than the original? Really: IT IS NOT, NEVER...maybe the mainstream radio version?
Prefer U2 and Simple Minds' versions
