I am from India. Kudos to these two young economists who seem to be genuinely interested in their country. It is so heartening to listen to nonagenarian Mr Babar. I hope there are more discussions of this level to motivate young entrepreneur.

This is something I have been thinking about forever, why don’t conglomerates is Pakistan invest overseas. Turns out they are not allowed to 🥶
This is something government should work on an urgent basis, at least allow Pakistani companies to make investments in Marketable Securities of the world for a dividend in USD

Fascinating to listen to someone who was already a youngster at independence time.
Somehow, what is missing here is the fact that lot of hatred and prejudice is being injected into little children through school curriculum. This is harmful and root cause of problems.
Addressing it will create a new generation who can think freely and innovate better

Babar sahib was talking about Sehgals (from Chakwal) the name he forgot. Sehgols not only invested in oil gas, they put up largest textile mill in Lyall Pur / Faisalabad named Koh e Noor textile mills with hundred thousand spindles (a number which defined the size of mills at that time)... Now only Koh e Noor city and big shopping mall is left as remnants of this industry. 😢

Now to the slightly hollow feeling, feel Babar sb is just way too decent and courteous to actually hit the nail on be more forthright on the reasons and causes of our national malaise.
I can see the subliminal frustration in Dr Atif as he kept pushing for more insightful answers but couldn’t really get those.
In the end, full respect to Babar sb for his optimism but I really don’t think we have any chance or hope any redemption.

Don’t give up. At the age of 98 a person that’s seen it all says this with humility and the blessing of wisdoms. Deeply inspiring and grateful 🙏🏾. But key areas were removed / not addressed adequately. Pakistan has to stop hating India or treating it as a peer. We have moved far ahead and will continue to do so. Yes regardless of Indian politicians also being crooks seldom we have elections, rule of law that jails said crooks 5/10 times , a military and police that protects us and not the other way around, and a really vibrant civil society to ensure our Muslims thrive. Hindus and so called lower class Muslims are tortured in 95% of the cases in Pakistan. Was shocked to learn Pakistan never had a constitution for so long and grateful to the wisdom of Patel , Ambedkar and Rajendra Prasad for giving us a constitutional framework 🙏🏾

12:42 Fazlur Rehman did a blunder, in hindsight. Completely stupidity to overvalue a currency of a developing country. 😅
16:20 The key problem that Pakistan just wanted to be close to America. This was another blunder.
17:56 So the issue was never Muslim as the deciding factor, Even a Ghulam Farouk would stay back because he had a big job in India!
20:25 Another big blunder, delaying the constitution. No pardon for this blunder.
23:04 What a revelation. That no one had the vision of looking the future. Clearly, it looked like a Jinnah power grab story?
24:21 The obsession on Kashmir, that was another blunder!
27:01 The Bhutto blunder of Nationalisation😢 and the private sector brains flew out.
35:00 The deregulation also did not help, unlike India.
36:15 The highways and infrastructure was built only to feed the greed of the powerful Military Junta, and that is how possibly the Chinese took roots in the usurious loans for infarstructure.
37:55 What an example of Mahindra and Mahindra, India. But you missed that this company was half owned by the first FM of Pakistan. It was called as Mahindra and Mohammed😂
40:20 Obsession in Real estate is another blunder.
46:40 This point on “collective interest” index. Pakistan is way way down on this index, how?
ALL OF THE ABOVE, is only because of “power grab” mentality….The Army which became a Military Junta of politics. Nothing else will help.
With the army establishment and the paranoia of Security State, is the only and only reason why 49:01 a drowning of Pakistan is inevitable.
51:00 The factory of creating hatred, it is so much in Pakistan!
      54:01 Staying Positive. 😊

I am against the idea that Syed Babar Ali says "... you are sitting at a place which generates new thought and we need it"! Because if you will have this attitude that the first hand knowledge will be created in the west and it will eventually be copied in countries like Pakistan, you will never motivate the idea that "We too can think, create, and use knowledge to make ourselves better" !!! Why to look up to the west and wait for them to make a move and then copy, why not motivate the idea of innovation and discovery from Pakistan

Addressing one driver won't change the situation; what's needed is a Persistent Package to address ALL the drivers.

The thing is those things can't change because that's the fundamental identity of Pakistan. If you take that away it collapses. So, pakistan can only splinter further(like it happened once in 1971). Basically like that dialogue in sholay: thakur na jhuk sakta hai na toot Sakta hai thakur sirf mar sakta hai.

  • @TheKmunjal
    @TheKmunjal 21 день назад +2

Good discussion but I feel you have not even touched upon one of the other key factors - for things to change, the political/military establishment will need to have a change of heart and that includes stopping this obsession with your larger neighbor. Otherwise a dis-proprtionate share of national resources will continue to be mis-allocated.
I am an Indian and feel India did three things rights during the first 20-25 years after independence that created a different trajectory for it vs. Pakistan:
    1. As you pointed out, putting together a constitution and maybe more importantly creating the linguistic basis for creation of states. That laid the foundation of the federal structure we have today
    2. Heavy investment in creating an industrial base led by the state with whatever US or Soviet capital was available since as Babar sahab pointed out, private capacity was lacking.
    3. Most critical might have been investment in higher education (albeit at the cost or primary education) with the creation of IIT’s, IIM’s and regional institutes that has led to the world class talent that are the envy of the world now.
Asim made a very important point in that a lot of countries go through a period of corruption and crony capitalism and eventually grow out of it when a few companies start churning out products that are globally competitive. The big hope for India now is that we churn out 5-6 such global firms that can compete with the best from the US and China. We can then be the next China with the additional advantage of a stable political system. Granted we keep our social structure open and inviting for everyone.

Things have to change in Pakistan. The first step towards change is acknowledging that something is wrong. Even if anybody still refuses to accept it, it has become so apparent and obvious that people have started questioning everything. The first step in that process is to look back and get some understanding, for which this session is a good beginning. The next is to accept that current power structures have to change and also that revival will be slow. The third step would be to focus on scientific education and invest in it's people. Try and keep religion for everyone to practice in their homes and follow progressive education. Right now, anybody who desires progressive education there has to basically go abroad. This needs to be remedied as a first step towards progress. The next decade is crucial for Pakistan on whether it can come back from the brink or at least stop the decline. However, at such crucial junctures, half measures don't help. It has to be all in or else the slow decline would continue

It would be good if Pakistanis learn about their own history. Congress never repressed Muslims but did not share seats with Muslim League in provinces where they were a majority. Even before that when a constitution as a precursor to demanding home rule from the British was drafted called Motilal Nehru Report by Congress in 1920s, Muslim interests and proportional representation were all taken into account . It was trashed by Jinnah and Muslim League. Jinnah even for once wanted to live in a unified nation. Instead he bargained hard for disproportionate representation of Muslims. Eventually India was partitioned to create a Muslim homeland, but neither Jinnah nor his followers had any blueprint unlike Congress top leaders to rule the homeland. They were after power to rule people of an independent nation without any vision of how to govern. Indian National Congress had a pre independence ideology to build a secular democracy with socialistic control and federal structure. It took 3 years to draft a constitution and not looking back, even though the state controls cost heavily to the economy. Pakistan was rudderless because there was no vision to serve the populace other than power grabbing - a trend that has continued since 1947. Leaders were assassinated, exiled, pushed out, hanged, jailed, overthrown by military. A weak political foundation can never help build an economy

It's a doomed territory nothing will happened until and unless it breaks and two-nation theory breaks it's head again and again. That will weaken political Islam till a point and will weaken the idea of fight with Hindus and India more and more. Think and analyse thoroughly 🙏🏻

Institutes are there to create an honest society, honest politicians, and honest businessmen. But who is going to create honest institutes. It is an egg and hen situation. Our problem is that we believe there is another way to get out of this vicious cycle. A divine intervention.

I think why Pakistan has not developed is because the critical mass of the country is the elite of Punjab ,also the Army, which has flourished manifold but an average citizen has been left behind..ditto fir india till ironically a Punjabi,dr Manmohan set the ball rolling..and hopefully we don't look back..

What bunch of hypocrates. Elder man says, "India had occupied Kashmir by that time!", without batting an eye. The others have no conscience either. Therein lies the problems of Pkstn, they are far removed from reality or truth.

    "India had occupied Kashmir"
Except Pakistan had invaded Kashmir after lawful transfer of Kashmir to India by the ruler.

    That’s the dichotomy
Reference Dr Manmohan Singh - from a 2 percent minority of Sikhs but that does not matter to us. His competence is what we benefited from .
