  • Hi, this video shows you how to use the Xbox Adaptive Controller on the Nintendo Switch. This might be useful if you are a limited mobility gamer and find using the Joy-Con or Switch Pro controller hard.
Remember this is not supported by Nintendo and it will not work as well as it does on the Xbox One console. Hopefully in the future Sony and Nintendo will allow the use of the Xbox Adaptive Controller natively without any adapters. But until then it is still possible to use it as shown in this video.
If you have used this Xbox Adaptive controller on Xbox, Switch, PC or PS4 etc. then please add your feedback about it (good or bad) down in the comments as it will help others who might be thinking about buying it.
I have only tested it for a couple of days and I am able-bodied so there might be many things that I don't understand or have missed out in the video.
    Thanks for watching it.
    Vince :-)

Xbox and Microsoft have done a fabulous job with this controller. I am the average gamer, the 99% that do not need anything beyond the standard controller, but I appreciate how game-changing this is for the 1% that need this. The Adaptive Controllers is a beautiful piece of hardware that opens up so many possibilities for players, apparently even cross-platform!
Back when Animal Crossing on the Wii was released, I found out that the game was playable with just the Nunchuck in my left hand, and ever since I’ve been interested in alternative control schemes and such in games. The adaptive controller is the next giant leap in customization and usability that I’ve hoped to see. I’ve seen different button and pad configurations used, such as in Microsoft’s own product demo videos, but for some reason I never even thought of using flight sticks or even building my own buttons as you suggested. Amazing!
I’m really excited for the opportunities that this controller offers to people. Thank you so much for your work!

The xbox adaptive controller has changd gaming for so many people, inc myself. I can now play without my disability limiting me as much as it did. I play with a sip/puff switch (a straw i blow into and suck for left mouse/right mouse click, A/B buttons on xbox etc), four ultra switches (tiny switches about size if end of finger that need tiniest touch to use). I then have a bluetooth device on my wheelchair which turns my wheelchair joystick into a mouse. I’m playing Witcher 3, FO4, Skyrim Ark and other games which would be impossible or me to play without this setup. (I have spinal injury and connective tissue disorder so no movement in my head or neck at all, weakened arms etc),

I can see a lot of potential in the Adaptive controller, MS has really made a nice device there.
A small tip (maybe obvious): if you're cutting a cable with two connectors, cut it somewhere in the middle, instead of right end at one of the connectors. That way you can use the second connector for something else.

@@anonymousshoe842 oh I got it now, but it wasn't well explained tbh. I thought "in the middle no that doesn't make sense" so I thought he meant in the middle VERTICALLY, so it would be easier to put it into switches, I guess. But cutting it directly in middle only makes sense if the cable is long enough to do so.

It never occurred to me that these adapters would work with this, it's good news for those who need it. Nintendo and Sony should really accept or license out these controllers for the good of the industry but I can't see it happening unfortunately.
Thank you for making this video, I know a lot of people struggle with the switch. It won't fix obligatory motion control issues I imagine, but it's a good start.

Microsoft would need to allow the other two to license the technology for their own consoles and make their own versions of the controller (should they choose to do so) or Sony/Nintendo would need to allow the Adaptive Controller to work with their consoles as is.
There's no reason the other two can't make something similar, but if the point is to make it easier for people who need it, it's a massive pain in the ass to make three separate controllers at high price points instead of universally allowing the one even if it is made by a rival.

Thank you so much for this video! However, when you went to demonstrate how to use the final set up on your TV/computer screen you did not include instructions for how to use the Nintendo Switch mount to transfer the image successfully on the larger screen. Since the May flash has to be inserted into the USB-C on the bottom of the Switch it makes it so that it no longer fits into the mount. I tried plugging the May Flash into the USB-C on the back of the mount (the one where you have to flip it down to have access), but seems like it has no power.
Thank you again for this video. I lost the use of my right hand four years ago and I only have partial use of my left. Hey Vince, I don't know if you check comments on old videos like this one but over the years I've recommended the Adaptive Controller to a number of people who have disabled friends or family members and told them to look up your videos so they can learn what adapters they need for their gaming set ups and how to jury rig any extra parts.
I got a message out of the blue from an old colleague that remembered how I mentioned this set up to a client in the past and wanted to know the details. Their cousin had gotten in a motorcycle accident and has lost most of the fine motor control in his left hand from the crash. Just wanted to let you know that there are a some very happy folk in a local Smash Bros scene here that get to keep playing with one of their friends because of your videos. I know the big 3 console players don't really like to play nice with each other (especially when they become market leader), but if Nintendo and Sony have no plans for a similar official Adaptive controller, would be good if they made the Adaptive controller work without the need of adapters etc.

Yes. This would allow disabled gamers to use controller across the board and allow increase sales on these othe consoles which currently arent accessible. Nintendo switch is the worst of the consoles for accessibility as hardly any games allow remapping of buttons, which is a basic thing to make gameplay easier for disabled gamers.

I do not think adapters would cause problems to your system as long as you are up to date (same goes for adapters with updatable capabilities). I think adapters were invented for many different reasons like if you are on a budget or do not like the original controller design or you want to try an old controller on a new piece of hardware or the other way around- working a new controller on old hardware! (Sounds way cooler imo too, but do whatever you’d like) I like that invention. I LOVE my PS2 and Dreamcast adapters.

Actually beg to differ on it being not Nintendo's responsibility if it screws up the switch because they're suppose to be on spec to the USB-C standard but sadly they're not. If a PC motherboard manufacture did that us Tech crowd would hold that manufacture responsible. And we wouldn't stand for them blaming the consumer like another company that uses a fruit as their brand.

I think it could be a fun challenge and you can get damaged one's quite cheap.

I have made a program that will let you send keys to the controller like a macro
You can give the program a file that says what the order of keys to press and the time of when to do it and also when to release the key
For example you could record you playing Mario Cart and it will play it the exact same way every time (aside from power ups getting In the way) it works by using a arduino (any kind of them works) but you can use other boards as well as I’m still working on the program.. I have also designed a controller that wirelessly connects to the Xbox game pad and will send signals that way so you don’t have a mess of wires. This requires another arduino next to the game pad with a Bluetooth module but the controller I designed doesn’t have a arduino in it instead I developed my own circuit board that has Necessary parts inside it :P the controller I made is designed for pro gamers who want to have a modular controller but this doesn’t stop people who have a well a nice way to put it is a hard time using a regular controller.. next up on my list is to develop a USB C adapter that replaces the game pad altogether but that’s pretty easy and since it already exists I’ll do that later unless people really want a cheaper one as Microsoft is definitely overcharging the device! Anyways
My controller is modular it has design inspiration from googles modular phone that never hit the market... you can look that up on RUclips.

Great video! Have you figured out how to do multiplayer with the switch and adaptive controller? I work in a hospital and our patients would like to try playing agains staff/family members but I haven’t been able to figure out how to set up multiplayer with the Nintendo switch and Microsoft adaptive controller

I mean Xbox and Nintendo have already worked together on cross compatible games like Minecraft and they seem pretty close. Idk if that says anything about them patching this or not but I hope they don’t if they see this.

Knowing 0% about gaming this video made sense to me, so thanks. I’m wondering if Microsoft’s adapted controller could also work with a Nintendo Classic mini? My daughter has CP but she’d love to play w her brothers.

Hi i am blind and i use the Switch lite. Love your house to videos. What have you ever done how to want soon on making the switch accessible for the visually impaired question with speech question I’m hoping that in the future Nintendo does that because I don’t see the screen and like if I want to go into the Settings on my own to speak. But I love your videos. Robbie.

Been looking for something like this for awhile. My daughter only has use of one arm (left) and she loved playing video games before her stroke in 2016. I want to get back to playing video games with her but it's been rough. Vince, does this work for a Nintendo Wii U as well?

Hi there, I haven't tried it yet but I can see if there is a way to get it to work on the Wii U. I am going to be busy most of this week so could you message me next weekend and I will try out various different adapters to see if any work with the Wii U :-)
