From Palm Beach County, moved here to Austin a year ago because we wanted change. Counting the days until my fiancé can transfer us back. It’s so depressing here and the food scene is terrible. It’s like they put so much emphasis on trying to make things looks “cool/hipster” from the outside, but where it counts misses the mark. Glad you and Katie got to see it for yourselves though.

I'm going to save everyone sometime here this review is not about the city it's literally him repeating himself over and over about a guy who looked at his car while he was walking across the street or something in the sound of his girlfriend or wife being annoyed in the passenger seat because he won't shut up about it. You can even fast-forward like 5 minutes and you will hear him say his brain could not compute to go around me. As if his brain could not compute just to move on from the subject and talk about something else like an actual conversation about the city or just a conversation in general. We moved to San Antonio and found housing and jobs are great here. We recently drove up to Austin and Congress Ave had been painted, so sad. The homeless camps were everywhere and a lot of construction. Austin is fun, beautiful and so much to do there but it's not for us.

People who grew up there are very fun, genuine, like to drink and BBQ, and they never meet a stranger. Until Austin got popular....and everyone with a tattoo and a fedora started moving there. It was great fun until around 2012, then it became a parody of itself. It's sad what the East side has become....it used to be a great black and Latino area but now it's as soulless as Dallas lol. I hear Detroit is a good place with cheap housing and nothing ever changing. I get the impression that the people complaining about "lack of culture" (what does that even mean?) and sterile aren't looking in the right places. We have plenty of places with great food, non Starbucks coffeeshops and 24 hour joints that are a hoot for late night eating. It isn't perfect, but what place is? When I visited Austin I was very let down. It's just a generic city. It's not bad by any means of the imagination. It just lacks what other parts of Texas has, such as South Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, and Amarillo to a certain point. Any of those places blow Austin by miles in terms of culture, food, people, and just about anything you can think of. Austin is like San Francisco if you took out the beautiful coastal scenery, and put it in basically a generic forest that you see basically anywhere in the south. This is coming from me, a Californian, and I generally am curious to know what people see in this place. People from Cali move to Austin, and I genuinely want to know if they even did their homework a little, and get to know more about Texas than just Austin. I know most people don't drive everywhere, but it helps to know what place offers the best setting to live for each person. I think going to Austin is kinda like a sheep mentality in my opinion. Californians hear about how cheap it is compared to LA or SF, and assume that's the best Texas has to offer when in reality Texas is way more than just Austin. Kinda like how people only know California for LA or SF when there's a lot more than that, and there might be the perfect place for somebody besides those two cities. People would never find that perfect town or city in Texas, California, or anywhere if they don't do enough research, and open their minds to more of what those states have to offer instead of doing what's most popular.

My impressions of Austin, having "accidentally" spending close to a year there after a breakup in Houston. . . in no particular order:
    1. The HOMELESS - Glad that you had the same impression that I imagine most do. Best descriptors would be ever-present...depressing...confrontational. I went to 6th Street as almost my first stop in Austin. You really can't escape being accosted in a very aggressive manner there by panhandlers. These aren't the meek, pale-skinned spare-changer kids that I have seen in places like Eureka. No, they look like they would rob you or worse after dark. The homeless camps are scattered throughout the city--not just downtown. The permissive city council attitude towards their presence emboldens their activities.
    2. Crowds & Traffic - I can't remember a single trip on I-35 where traffic didn't come to a complete stop at least once. Toll roads here, which are pretty uncommon out West. Had an estimated trip time of 16 minutes to an office meeting that took 62 minutes. Any attraction remotely above 4.3 on Yelp is going to attract lines or driving at least 10 minutes to park.
    3. Weather - It can be blistering hot with the humidity of East Texas, and 100+ extremes of West Texas. Then in winter you can get the most melancholy grey skies, followed by buckets of rain. I have lived all the way from Oregon to Florida, and Austin has the most unpredictable weather of anywhere I have lived.
    4. Community - I think that if I were in my 20's instead of my 50's, I would be kinder in my sentiments for Austin. If you like a standard playbook of food trucks, music festivals, electric scooters, micro-beards and a liberal environment, it's fine. Even so, a lot of mid-sized cities in the US are doing it better and cheaper. Compared to Arizona and Florida, however, people are generally a lot friendlier in Texas. Be prepared to fight a crowd anywhere on the weekends.
    5. Food - A mixed bag. Agreed-most of the places in the suburbs, you are pretty well forced to frequent corporate chains. HEB Grocery might be the best big supermarket almost anywhere I have lived, and I don't know why most of their Austin locations are so drab and depressing.
    6. Good Stuff. West Austin-beautiful rolling hills, nice shopping and a little bit less congestion. Lake Travis and the outdoors-surprisingly great hiking in certain parks. All of the surrounding Hill Country towns seem to have much charm and character than Austin. Elgin and Bastrop are especially nice . . . I imagine that the little towns are what some people picture when they think of moving here.
And yes, San Antonio and Houston have so much more to offer. Downtown San Antonio is probably the West's best-kept secret...wonderful Latin village, the Hemisfair Tower, Riverwalk and especially the old Pearl Brewery complex.

Austin is actually the smallest Big City in Texas, but yet it’s the most expensive. Also, it has the worst traffic outside of Houston due to terrible infrastructure! I can’t understand for the life of me why it’s so expensive compared to other larger cities in the state! It does have the Hill Country to the west but to be honest, unless you’re a millionaire, you’re it really going to spend time over there as its mostly neighborhoods and the lakes. Most of the time will be spent downtown, Domain and south Congress.

But had nice springs and lakes to cool off at.Went there last year and what a difference, way over built and super crowded. No plan for infrastructure as the roads are a scrambled mess. All the nice springs and creeks are polluted and unusable, can't even let your pet drink out of them.Very sad as how 40 years has ruined one of the nicer places in Texas.

If you want to get a cool view of the skyline of Austin. Go to Barton Creek Mall. The mall is on the southwest end of town. It's a cool view! It's clear to me when you drove through Houston you didn't drive near Minute Maid Park where the Houston Astros play baseball. Less than a mile away from Minute Maid Park Tent City. Every major city has homeless problems. You have the University of Texas Campus The (drag) The State Captial and Barton Springs, Zilker Park, and 6th street! The Capital is made out of off-pink Granite. From listening to you it's clear you haven't done much research about Austin. Austin is the world capital of music.

I really like the way you show the real side of the cities, not tourist attractions. Like when I went to San Antonio the only thing I saw was the Alamo and the Riverwalk. You show the real life of people living in places. I love the bantor between you and Katie! It is very entertaining. You are a very cute couple. The only thing I would question about your youtube channel is the name. Since you venture out into all parts of the US, why would you be called Southern Life? Just a thought. No one walking around in Austin! Someone gave you the wrong tour guide! I've lived in Austin since 82'. I've seen it change dramatically. Companies come and go. Buildings being torn down and new ones being built. Houses as well. Mall turned into a college. Having costume weapons on 6th street during Halloween to being arrested for having a costume weapon on 6th! The traffic has always been there since 90's but has gotten much worse. The cost of living is insane! If your not a doctor or well known lawyer, forget about living here! You'll end up living in Georgetown or further out and working in Austin. The good side of town is running from $800,00 to a million+! The area that used to be called ghetto has homes and duplexes priced at $500,000! The richest ghetto I know of! No section 8 available in Austin. But other services are that are similar.
As for people walking, go downtown Congress. Many business men/women walking. Tourists too. Go to town lake or Lady Bird Lake. Bunch of people walking, jogging, bycycling, walking their dogs, and canoeing in lake!
This guy must hate Austin or want people to stop moving here. He literally made the wrong turn! He missed a lot you all! It's like going to New York and turning into Harlem saying Time Square doesn't have all the lights and businesses they say. 😐 😆
The food is great here too! It depends where you go. Dan's Hamburgers, Matt's El Rancho, Weigle Ironworks BBQ, Cherry Creek Catfish, Catfish Parlor. For vegans or health nuts it's Mr. Natural. Many good places to eat.

I live in nearby New Braunfels and I worked in Austin for five years basically. Austin is very unique within Texas, it is the liberal area surrounded by more conservative areas outside of San Marcos which is a very liberal college town. What Austin is known for in our area is the drivers, they are aggressive and they are fast and they are pretty much crazy LOL. It's I-35 and it is the traffic that is always bumper to bumper pretty much outside of very small windows. Outside of Monday through Wednesday around 9 a.m. to 11 and then from around 2 to 3 you can drive pretty good on I-35 and Mopac, and in the evenings but if there is an event in town or if it's just particularly full it's bumper to bumper and forget about rush hour. Because of this drivers are very impatient and they are very discourteous to each other for being such a smaller City. I have to disagree with your tagline in regard to why are people moving here if you are moving because you are looking for a conservative type City, Austin is not the place for you. However, I am a conservative and I adore Austin, I love its energy, I love its eclectic nature, I love Congress Avenue and its vibe. No city is for everyone and if you do not spend time in the ATX you really cannot give a judgment like saying why are people moving here in fairness because I could say I don't like Miami but that's not fair of me to say because I've never stayed in Miami for an extended length of time. So it's not for everyone, there are many in Texas who do not like Austin, but there are many of us who actually do love it even with it being so different.

It was a blast everyday and the weekends were super. Austin used to be a destination thousands of people used to aspire of going to because of its beauty, nightlife, and eccentric way of living -- that was back in the day though. Austin has now turned into a homeless and degenerate place to visit and thousands of people have moved their vacations to other parts of the state. The crime is unbelievable and the lawlessness has gown to such extent that even partying down town on 6th street is putting your life at risk for the crime and shootings down there. I hear that local politics has turned Austin into the city dump it is today. I will never go down to Austin again, way to dangerous to be in that city. Have a great time on your travels and be safe.

I’m a native Texan and I agree 100% Austin tries way to hard to be “cool” or “progressive” instead of just being itself. If UT wasn’t smack in the middle of it, it would be just another small mid sized city and prob pretty damn conservative. Now I’ll say this, Austin had a great reputation up until about 20 years ago and then the city began losing its hippy, live music character. These days nobody is actually from Austin, it’s filled with people from all over the place. So there’s no real culture or traditions that define a city. Plus it’s more of a place to be outdoors, not really a big city vibe.

I agree. Watching this, I don't see what all the fuss is about for Austin.
