The song is about how some people look to rock stars for answers to the world’s problems, but the singer, who is just a singer in a rock and roll band, has no answers.
And I quote "Don't tell me, I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band". We all have a voice. Theirs reached a huge audience. Yours and mine reach those we interact with, one on one. Each can have an impact.

This is a song that shows the band getting tired of people perceiving them as having all the answers. Their music and lyrics were really searching and introspective, and some of their fans saw them as gurus. They were searching too, and their music/lyrics were deep and felt personal, and I hope you get to hear more of their material. Someone below mentioned that their seven albums from Days of Future Past (with "Nights in White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon") through The Seventh Sojourn (with this song) contain much of their best material, and I agree, even though I discovered them in the 1980s. "The Story in Your Eyes" and "Question" are worth it, and I'll also add "In the Beginning/Lovely to See You" and "Watching and Waiting"!

I think a guy in Austin camped out for a month before the Moodies came because they had all the answers. This song was the encore every time I saw them, in the 80's

This song is a lot like 10 Years After "I want to change the world" in that he says he is just a rock singer and not the person to fix all of their issues. A lot of people think that musicians should reflect and fix our world problems in their music.
As a former "Singer in a Rock and Roll Band", I have loved every album this band has put out, eagerly awaiting each release. They had, in my opinion, everything I love about music! And, yes this is from Seventh Sojourn!

This song was written after too many fans had interpreted previous songs and thought they had the answers to everything....and when they didnt the fans were disgruntled.....hence the "I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band"....in other words...I dont have all the secrets to the universe......if you want answers or changes go find them or make them yourselves.

I have been loving The Moody Blues since 1964 and Go Now, through when Justin Hayward began singing with them, and all the way through. Fantastic band.

John Lodge was apolitical and wrote this after someone started talking politics with him he responded, 'I'm just singer in a rock and roll band.'

The first seven albums are epic. I love every song on each one. No other band has done that for me.
Not quite, their 1st album, The Magnificent Moodies, was mostly blues covers, having their breakthrough hit, Go Now, which was also a cover. This was, what the band referred to, as the Moody Blues, mark 1. Denny Laine (later, of Wings) was the guitarist and lead singer, with Clint Warwick on bass, and then 3 guys associated with the "classic" lineup, Graeme Edge on drums, Mike Pinder on keys, and Ray Thomas on woodwinds. It is albums 2 through 8, that are called the "core 7" albums, with John Lodge replacing Warwick, and Justin Hayward replacing Laine, that comprise their peak period.

Yes you are both right. Even though I do like "Go Now", Days of Future Past is the beginning of the best line up of them.

I have followed the Moody Blues since 1965. There’s no one like them in the “Progressive” genre of rock ‘n’ roll.

I love an awful lot of Moody Blues songs but for some reason this has always been my favorite. Just a total banger with a lot of meaning and compassion behind it as well. Absolutely love that Bass line!
Great song from the "Seventh Sojourn" album. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Isn't Life Strange", "Ride My See-Saw", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once.
the Moody Blues were my very first concert, 1971! i would suggest doing The Question, followed by The Balance. first and last songs on their album A Question of Balance.
The pictures were album covers or gate-folds from their albums. This is from their "classic lineup" period, and all five band members composed songs, each having a distinct style, giving the band's sound variety. Nights in White Satin and Tuesday Afternoon were written by Guitarist Justin Hayward, who tended towards balladry, although his hard rocking Story In Your Eyes, is my favorite Moody Blues tune. I'm Just a Singer, is from bassist, John Lodge, who, wrote some great rockers like this and Ride My See Saw. Lodge could toss off ballads too, Isn't Life Strange and One More Time to Live, are stellar. For I'm Just a Singer, Lodge was feeling frustrated that by the end of the turbulent 60's with various protests, wars and riots, some fans were viewing the band as messianic, and having answers to world problems. After this album, the band took a 3 year hiatus, and while they did reform for Octave, Pinder an early driving force for the band, was disenchanted with the Rock and Roll lifestyle, and, having some personal problems with Edge, left the band, as they started a 3rd phase of their careers.
They have some great surround sound versions of their albums for those that have a setup at home or special headphones. For me growing up in the seventies, the album, this is the moody blues, a double album of their hits and additional songs was my favorite. Now I love all of their albums. Got to see them in concert several times. I was a little jealous of the people that saw them in the sixties because I read they use to be known for giving very long concerts. 😂😂😂
The sounds you hear are often played on a Mellotron, one of the original electronic keyboard instruments.
As someone else mentioned, be sure you also listen to Emerson, Lake and Palmer, a progressive rock supergroup. Keith Emerson was one of the best keyboard players you've ever heard. There is a video of the song Knife Edge which will show you their style.

Ride My See Saw and House Of 4 Doors are 2 of my fav's off "In Search Of The Lost Chord" album......My other all time fav albums "7th Sojourn, Every Good Boy Deserves Favor, On The Threshold Of A Dream, To Our Children's Children's Children. They also put I'm Just A Singer out as a single...... Most albums you have to listen right through as they tell a story with each song......This is a long journey but so well worth it. Justin Hayward wrote many of the bands songs..
There's another one of my favorites. Ride my Seesaw is a great song.

I love the Moody Blues. I had their first 7 albums and have seen them live twice...I always play with a symphony orchestra...last time seeing them was at Red Rocks with the Colorado symphony orchestra...was a night to remember for sure

Oddly, this song was released as a single directly after "Nights in White Satin" (from the "Days of Future Past" album that had been recorded in 1967) was re-released as a single in 1972 and peaked for a couple of weeks at #2 on the US Hot 100, if I recall correctly. "I'm Just a Singer ( In A Rock and Roll Band)" peaked at #12.

One of my favorite albums by them is "A Question Of Balance". Check out the song "The Question" for starters and "Melancholy Man". "Go Now" is a good older one. And then a couple of later ones are "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" "You're Wildest Dreams".

My fav Moody Blues album is "A Question of Balance ". Humbly suggest that you give a listen to the first track on the album " Question " and then the last track on the album " The Balance "but do them together...you will be pleasantly surprised....IMHO...
This song is from their album Seventh Sojourn, which is meant to be listened to as a journey through their music experience! Do yourselves a favor and listen to the album start to finish! It really is a beautiful ride! Speeding up slowing down back and forth a teal musical experience!

One of my absolute favorite groups and I've seen them live 3 times.
You must do the live version of Question. I've seen a couple of channels. Do a certain live version that's out there and it's astonishing.

I heard the song writer, bassist John Lodge, say that he wrote the lyrics out of frustration because the band's fans would continually come to the musicians for answers about larger questions of the meaning of life. Apparently, because the Moody Blues tended to invoke cosmic themes, people thought they had some kind of special insight. In the song, Lodge was saying that the musicians really didn't know anything more than anyone else, despite the mysticism of their lyrics and the spaciousness of their music.
🇨🇦 The best music has come between 1959 - 1989 and if you are keeping score, more songs from this era are Vibrant, Energetic, Happy, Upbeat, Original, and Creative compared to the so called music of today ! 🇨🇦

Man I miss concept albums. By this album they had gained an almost religious/cult status with a lot of fans. Their telling them "we're just singers in a rock&roll band". I think the only artist who still attempts stuff at this level (but it takes her awhile) is Kate Bush. You should react to her "Nocturn" off Aerial". She takes you to another world.
Love your channel .. just finished my own Moody Blues medley their greatest hits .. in high school & college when they exploded ..
This band, which I didn't realize until a few years ago, is English with two vocalists. As I listen to them know I've made a discovery - at least for me. I think 🤔 the most similar American group, to The Moody Blues, was a seventies powerhouse named Chicago. Chicago relied on horns and orchestral arrangements. Only difference - Chicago had a much longer career span (nearly 17 years), put out 22 albums and did more ballads. Similar in material. If you didn't know better you'd swear THIS is a Chicago tune. I did until a DJ said otherwise. Great musicians in both groups.

If you have seen concert, photos, video of Paul McCartney & Wings, there was one other consistent member, Denny Lane. Denny co-wrote with Paul, played guitar, played Bass during concert if Paul wanted to guitar. Denny was with the Moody's from 1964-'66. He sang on their first hit "Go now". Mow when the Moody Blues were inducted in the Rock Hall in 2018, Denny was included with them. He originally wasn't. I recall an interview, where Justin believed Denny was in with Wings. Wings had a rotation of members, -so only Paul McC' went in solo. Justin went and asked the Rock Hall to go back ,and ad Denny in their group as an original member. That was very "cool" of The Moody's to do. Denny died recently in Dec'2023.
And, the Moody's should have been in the Hall years earlier!!

Heads up when It comes to Moody Blues Nights in White Satin. There is a poem called Late Lament at the end and that is the way we heard on the radio when it came out BUT The live versions don't have it because they do the poem at the beginning of the concerts and from the studio album it is listed separately so you need to make sure it is attached. ...Moody Blues Nights in White Satin/late lament. Also there is another Moody Blues song to do the same thing I was told that Procession is a great lead in to The Story In Your Eyes... Procession/The Story In Your Eyes.. .and others agree as you can find it listed that way.

According to John Lodge, bass player, who wrote this song, people were using the Moody's songs as, "a new beginning, heaven, on earth, etc.," and they were looking at the Moody's to lead them into the new "Promised Land." As John said, "We're just singers in a rock and roll band. We're nothing special."
OMG I saw them several times, the best was at Harrahs Casino at Lake Tahoe in around 1990, 33 years ago was the last time, I can't believe it has been that long
Agree with folks who say that pretty much anything from the Core Seven albums is worth a listen. There are so many good songs that I've never been able to pick out a top three favourites, or even a top ten. Nights in White Satin, of course, but after that it could be just about any track from any of the core seven albums. For My Lady from Seventh Sojourn is nearly always in my list, but after that it's often whatever I listened to last.
And then there's the fact that several were "concept albums" where listening to the whole thing is an immersive experience and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. They continued to produce some beautiful albums for years after those seven, but to me none of them were like "every song on this is great".
Despite the contempt from music critics, they have a huge and loyal following, of which I'm a proud member. They're the only band that I have more than three of their albums (a dozen or so, not counting a few 'best-of' ones), mostly on vinyl.
In Search of the Lost Chord is a great album. Of course this song is from Seventh Sojourn.
They had it all….and for many years. Many,many hits you would love if you continue.

Glad to see you got to this song. As you noted it is a metaphor for the time it was written and the fact that they are just singers in a rock and roll band, but with hindsight we now see how much singers and music influenced things back in the 70's.
A couple of suggestions from their later work are The Voice, Gemini Dream, and The Other Side Of Life.
This title came from an encounter with John Lodge and some dude who confronted him at his house. Apparently the guy was ranting about something and John basically said I'm just in the band or something like that.
Greatest Moodies Rocker is "The Story in Your Eyes".

"Gypsy" and "Eternity Road" are great tracks from the Moody Blues album To Our Children's Children's Children.
The Moody Blues made a comeback in 1981 and charted big with an album called "Long Distance Voyager" and a song called "The Voice". It's up-tempo, and a Listening Experience as well. Then later on in the Eighties, their last two big hits were "Wildest Dreams" and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" - two midtempo pop songs that are two of my favorites. Please react to "The Story in Your Eyes". It's a great Rock Song.

They were being honest, and not necessarily into the poetry they elude to. That's an audience thing. In an interview they did with the BBC they recognized that aspects of their music and poetry had lead to a situation where the Moody Blues songs became almost religious to an audience where LSD had an influence on the "meaning" of some of their deeper moody songs.
It was one of the reasons for this song, they needed to explain themselves as musicians, to an audience which was perhaps infatuated with the other side of life. I love their music totally.

Melancholy Man is an excellent choice to check out. The Balance is also similar in subject matter
Four great writers and singers and musicians. Nobody else like them. They could do "progressive music" in four-minute songs -- didn't need to do 20-minute pieces to get things across.
Some look to celebrities for guidance and also ask them to stand for a cause and help with a cause. The Beatles had a similar song.
