- How I do this on engines that are often deemed scrap. Use this method at your own risk and wear safety gear. I ass-ume no liability on anything even if your head explodes or the world ends.
Two hours later and I'd have the heads off, crank and rods out, cam and lifters in the bin, and halfway to the machine shop to have it checked and bored.😂
I'm a marine mechanic will come in handy for these salt induced seized engines appreciated your knowledge ausie Al
Thanks man 👍
Vinegar will eat away rust, The way you're doing it Is the way I unlocked a 65 hp Wisconsin engine that was frozen for 25 years, you would like what I use to turn the Motor, It a large bar with a # 41 chain wraps around the Harmonic balancer, its 4ft , I also have another way of freeing up Motors ,I use a 275 gallon fuel oil tank put it on blocks and fill with old oil Boil the motor for 3-5 days straight, I dug up a 401 nail head motor buried under ground 30 years, It freed up in 3 days.
Cool story 😎
Thanks man. Would be interesting to see what the inside looks like after this treatment.
Vinegar is an acid that does work well on rust. If you are going to do this to a motor you want to use flush it with baking soda and water to neutralize the acid and clean it up so the water won’t cause rust again.
Irregardless of how well you may flush after using Vinegar .
Once Water is re-introduced to any Iron or steel It WILL Rust again . That is a well documented Scientific Fact .
This works great. Freed up a 292 Y-block several years ago with vinegar. Love the lever too, work smart not hard.
Thanks for pausing the vid to do repettitive stuff. I like your style. Shit works, good shit.
Thanks man 👍
i may be an ignorant moron but this is helpful. i have a locked ford and tried atf, et al.. with no luck. gonna give this a shot... thanks!
@Ecose It may take quite a bit longer than 24hrs., but it WILL work.
I work on a lot of dreadfully stuck solid junk Model A and Model T engines and use vinegar often and also use low cost muriatic acid (stronger acid) first and follow up with white vinegar. Great video!
Yeah I bet engines that old are getting tougher to find.
@@michaeljamison8254 as I hobby I try to bring back to life rusted stuck junk engines that no one else wants
Most of the time I can do that. Sometimes they are either too far gone or tracked beyond repair
Acetic acid is the active ingredient in vinegar that dissolves rust. Very cheap and effective although can take awhile. Vinegar also works great in the Landry on the spin and rinse cycle.
Tom Landry?
I have used Marvel Mystery oil, ATF, and kerosene. Never tried vinegar, although I have used it cleaning rusty cast iron skillets. Makes sense. Tank you!
Saved me a lot of time on bad ones trying to salvage what I could.
An engine that is locked up real tight from rust will often have severe pitting in the cylinder walls. You will likely end up with a usable crank and rods only. Sometimes the block can be saved with a sleeve or 2 which greatly increases the cost of a build.
Sometimes the rust will crack the cylinder so get it magnafluxed!
Sometimes my crack gets stuff in it that looks like rust!
@@michaeljamison8254 Could be a bad sign? Hope you never find any mysterious latex hanging out.
@@michaeljamison8254sometimes ppl smoking crack think they’re smart
I DO like to put rusty vinegar in my b hole. I have 2 stuck 6.2 diesels and Ima try this out. That lever is smart
Must have a big but hole to be considering getting a 6.2 up there
Way to go. I use Vinegar around the shop & home for killing weeds, cleaning things. But will give it a try on a old motor. Thanks, Happy trails.
Thanks for sharing I'm going to use it with boat engines from now on
Heat up diesel to about 130 C and tip in spark plug holes , works wonders !
I like the rear view ! Crack is BAD !! I've used this method to make old rusty main bearing caps look new..
That’s what I was going to say!!!
Hey Mike!
@@TheMt94sshey bro! Good to see you on here.
Interesting video, learned something new, greetings from Belgium, Europe
Thanks. I have a 350 sitting out in my back yard I forgot about!! This may do the trick.
I've got a 59 Corvette engine that's stuck and I'm going to try the same thing on trying to get it free . I want to build the engine and I was told it had been stored in the shop where I got it . Hopefully the cylinders aren't full of rust pit's . Cool video .
Thanks for the information. This will be quite useful as I take on another project.
Evaporust would probably work good too. The only problem with vinegar is it may eat into the steel since it's acidic.
It's great to see an actual human doing videos. not just the wake(hollywood)types.
By the Way I still own the 65hp Wisconsin, it in my skid steer today 20 years later .
Good video mate like that made up lever, did you use the baby sledge hammer as well, wondering as it was in the shot
Cool video thanks for sharing
Exhaust manifolds turned upside down good for demo derby! SBC for the win.
I was going to say this too.... Saw lots of guys flip the manifolds side-to-side, then cut little holes in the hood, and set a couple of shiny pipes there. If nothing else, it makes it a bit more exciting. If tuned right, you can have flames coming out the pipes.
Cool video, might come in handy someday
Good video, thanks
I would put kerosene and let it sit overnight
Do you want to sell it
I enjoyed the video but don't really see the point. The engine is getting torn apart anyways but I don't tear down engines so I could be wrong. As other guy said the vinegar will cause rust too especially surface rust everywhere. One product acid that never does this is Metal Prep from POR15. I love the stuff.
Leverage is the main point. Secondly it helps cut rust through a huge part of the pistons, valves and combustion chambers. Then it is much easier to tear down, get the pistons out and rinse off everything.
Yep. He did more damage to the engine just for sake of turning it (instead doing disassembly).
@GrandePunto8V the motor was deemed junk to start with, if he can't salvage it, then he didn't hurt a thing...BUT if the rust can be bored out, the heads decked and ported, a new set of valves and a crank polish... he has a great chance at reviving that hot rod motor. Only way to know is get it apart and that is gonna involve chemistry of some sort.
@@GrandePunto8V you have no idea what you are talking about, but that's ok, you're welcome here anyway 👋
Yeah you're wrong. But that's ok. Tear a rusty engine down and try to get the pistons out without doing this. It's an interesting experience.
Brilliant 😊!
I have a 225 Buick odd fire (Jeep Dauntless V6) I wrote off years ago...
Those are pretty scarce these days, maybe it can be saved.
A channel called Jim’s Automotive Machine Shop is overhauling one of those and posting videos of the process, in case that interests you. Only the first so far, but they will work it in.
YEP YOZA BOSS 🎉
I think it's great you saved that engine and I learnt something. 🇬🇧
"Saved" by introducing more damage (by chemical etching into cylinder walls and scoring them by turning the engine).
@@GrandePunto8VI suppose you would of just done a set of gaskets and run it...
Thanks for sharing this information 👍
I need a motor for my Z28 a350
Whooda thunk?
Genius!
Actually it's the opposite. He introduced more damage and wear (mechanical and chemical) into the unit. He should disassemble the engine, not try to turn it while it's full of rust (it's an abrasive).
@@GrandePunto8V Not what the customer asked for.
Or vinegar and let it sit overnight that how the old school would do it
Rust.... The original "loctite" !
I need a motor for my Z28 a350
Ive got a stuck 351m its not rusted but its being stubborn so I will give it a try
Ive unlocked several worthless motors people used to tell me Buick 3.8 231v6,2.8 Chevy 173 v6, Chevy L6, and 305 and 307 sbc, and two 307 Oldsmobile V8 's
Great video. pure ciitric acid powder made into a solution also works to remove rust. Same principle.
My dad was a mechanic and when I was a kid back in 70s, he used to use alcohol and acetone to soak cylinders to eat the rust up. This looks like it’s a lot cheaper and just as effective, plus it looks like it works quicker awesome idea!👍🎉🎊 BTW, the acetone tends to free up the oil rings. When my dad freed up a seized engine, we always got it running just the way it was we didn’t rebuild them. Put them in a car and sell it!
Depends on how long it's been stuck and how heavy the rust is. Worth a try before pulling the heads off and getting out the BFH.
Storing this to memory...thanks very much.
Now that you have it freed up pouring oil into the cylinders might be a good idea if you are going to disassemble it immediately. Vinegar is a chemical. It’s a mild acid. Adding a little heat to it will make it work even faster. In this case, it wasn’t an option for you so you had to use time by letting it soak. This would be a good video to show kids in a high school science class. Hopefully somebody can rebuild that engine and use it.
I liked your presentation and have subbed.
I love the way you flipped the exhaust manifolds, to keep the vinegar inside. I would have tried to duct tape over the openings, without the manifolds! lol!
Brake fluid works good and it's a lubricant and anti rust agent
White vinegar is a acid a very slow acting acid but an acid just the same
White vinegar and break it loose after about almost a week of sitting in there, and once you get it unstuck treat it to some atf to clean it up a bit and i still would consider it a core to build
Great video. Like the upside down manifolds. Going to try the vinegar next time. In past I've only had good luck with diesel and two stroke oil mixed together. But this would be much cheaper. Thanks.
Everyone feels better after a shower. In France, a shower is called a douche.
Excellent, new sub, thanks for sharing. Cheers.
Very cool, broad minded too….
I bet you do care about the environment really…..
Best wishes
Loved the video I thought you were going to put oil in it it's a clever idea learned something new and useful 👍
Sent this to a friend having trouble with the wife. Hopefully this helps to open up the hole. Trick is to pour it on to begin with
When I saw the upside down manifolds on it I thought it was in a boat. We used the old straight Ram horn manifolds upside down instead of marine exhaust.
You can also used "cleaning vigegar" which is slightly more acidic than regular vinegar.
Wish I had seen this 12 years ago when I had a zero cost 396, no heads, outside, locked solid. Probably could have saved it. Thanks for the knowledge!
Im going to do this on a spare boat motor! Was going to use coka cola again (had success on a sled) but if this works why not
He's right y'all cost nothing to be nice
Loved the example I've used vinegar to remove rust for year , never thought of this though
Great idea you are right i havent seen anyone else use that method looks really good it works thatS the main thing and a cheap fix
Who cares how you do it, if it works and is affordable then its a great method.
Got a Saylor Beall 9000 I'm going to try this on.
Excellent; thanks of sharing this
Cleand old ammo like magic.
I bet it smells like Italian salad dressing 😋
Interesting, would be interested in tear down and what planned usage afterwards. FYI, you can also buy "cleaning" vinegar which is a higher acidic level than ordinary white vinegar. About the same price too. Lots cheaper than evaporust, that's for sure... :)
I buy it from dollar tree, that and totally awesome for degreaser...
Good idea , BUT, why bother? 350 Chevy, a dime a dozen. I could see using this idea on an old flathead Ford, or a 12 cylinder Mercury my brother has.
Like i said in the video, not a dime a dozen where I live anymore. Thanks for watching 😎
Actually, you should have been wearing safety glasses. This engine it trash isn't it, your might be a waist of time!
Your reel schmart guy.
