@@Misatoo Oh it certainly is hey, but it also adds this whole new level of adventure to travel.
The 'vegan passport' is super helpful in translating the meaning of vegan for us as we travel. Though some cooks don't realise the small amounts of shrimp or fish in the sauces they use in cooking, so there are still times when we are served non vegan food... But times are certainly changing.
I have a link to the vegan passport in the description above if you're not familiar with what it looks like 😁

I think in Thailand they put fish sauce in everything even if it's vegetarian which is why it tasted like fish.

Suggestion: a lot of 'viewers' actually listen to YT videos as if they were podcasts because we are multi-tasking. I think you know how much of your video one can 'get' by audio only. Also, if you are going on edit audio instead of adding background music, invest in a lavalier mic so that background crackles don't interfere with voices

You are totally right! The yellow Jay/Jae symbol on all the packets in supermarkets & corner stores makes finding snacks super easy in Thailand. Next time we are in Thailand we can go into more depth about the things to specifically look out for when travelling as a vegan.

Ok, I hope I can clarify a bit about Buddhist diet for Westerners. But if you're not interested in reading further, then just know that if you're vegetarian or vegan, it's better to visit Vietnam than Thailand. The only Buddhist diet that is strictly vegetarian is in China (except Tibetan monks who eats meats), Vietnam and Korea. All other Buddhist monks in other countries has defiled the Buddha's teachings to the point where they think eating the mutilated body parts of sentient beings brutally murdered in slaughterhouses are in line with the Buddha's teaching of compassion for all sentient beings. These meat-eating monks includes Tibetan monks, Thai monks, Cambodian monks, Burmese monks and Japanese monks. This list is not exhaustive.
The reason Buddhists started out in India as lacto-vegetarian and not vegan was probably because they didn't kill cows in India at the time of the Buddha due to the prevalence of Hinduism, and given the fact that Indians had been addicted to dairy as much as the West has been. That traditional Buddhist lacto-vegetarian diet has persisted til today among all Buddhist monks in Vietnam, China and Korea and they have not make any efforts to upgrade to veganism even though the cruelty of the dairy industry in modern time is so shocking that should require them to take a hard look at their diet. This is only criticism I have with Chinese Buddhist monks, because they should be the ones leading to make the changes to remove all dairies in their diet.
I really have a hard time addressing a vegetarian Buddhist monk as "master", which is expected of me when speaking to them due to the fact that I'm vegan, which is far superior to them in terms of compassion for animals. As for the meat-eating monks, I will not waste my time mentioning them any further except for the fact that people need to see them as the worst hypocrites among all Buddhists in the world., and that includes the dalia lama as well. All he ever does is let people worship him like a living Buddha. But would a Buddha partake in the violence of meat-eating and the mundane business of politics? He's the biggest hypocrite of all of Buddha's disciples.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain the different variations of Buddhist diets in Asia. It’s very interesting to read your insight about them and find some clarity. We too have found it very odd that monks and Buddhist restaurants in a lot of the places we have lived predominantly tend to include meat in some form or another. Hypocrisy indeed. Thanks for leaving such a thoughtful comment 🤙🏽

Efforts to portray Hindus as champions of non-violence are deceptive. The Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda, revered scriptures of Hinduism/Brahmanism, indeed endorse animal sacrifices like cows and horses in 'yajna' rituals. Despite Hinduism's attempt to claim credit for promoting virtues like non-violence, historical evidence indicates systematic persecution and executions, including barbaric methods like impalement, by Hindus against proponents of such principles, often with the support of ruling dynasties.

While it is getting a lot easier to find vegan food in Thailand, it’s not fool proof. Especially when travelling outside of the tourist destinations.
