  • Please visit us at: botanyboy.org/ For the last 14 years I have been tracking a population of a critically endangered jewel orchid, Odontochilus hatusimanus, on a mountain near my home in southern Japan. This unassuming species is easy to miss unless you know what you’re looking for. I first saw it out of flower and thought it was a relatively common species, Goodyera foliosa. I photographed them in flower a couple years later and shared these with an orchid expert in Japan. He told me I had stumbled on the ultra rare Odontochilus hatusimanus, a species once thought extinct by Japanese authorities. To date it is only known from two populations, one in Kagoshima Prefecture and the one featured in this video. Lots of other plants featured as well. Why don’t you come along to see one of Japan’s most endangered orchid species in the wild!

      Ha ha! Lots of mountain climbing/cycling my whole life has made me what I am. Yes, I am hoping that coming generations do not completely forget about nature, but right now I fear that is what is happening. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thanks so much for sharing that! How beautiful and precious. Great to know they exist and you found them. Also love those forests.

      I'm really happy you liked it. I plan to be up there again in a few weeks to capture another orchid in flower. The only problem are the biting flies, which can be as big as your thumb! I plan also to make a "meditation/relaxation" video of this forest in the not so distant future, so keep a look out for that too.

      Sounds great :D (except for the biting flies).

    Wow! What a great video. Great determination to find the orchid and to go back one week later for the flowers! Beautifully captured!!! Reminds me of my bird and orchid hunting adventures in the Costa Rican cloud forests.
    I recently photographed some Cypripedium acaulie in Canadian boreal forest, but it was not the trek to find them. But still my heart fills with joy at finding them each year for the very brief time they are in flower.
    Looking forward to your next orchid hunting adventure.

      I have to say that botanizing the cloud forests of Costa Rica sounds more exciting than looking around the local woods here! I grew up around Cyp. acaule as a child, and it may have been the reason I got hooked on terrestrial orchids. Thanks for watching!

      Botanizing in CR cloud forests is great but it's difficult to find IDs for many of the orchids encountered. The orchid museum in Monteverde helped with a few IDs. What's interesting is how some orchids like Epidendrum radicans grows like a roadside weed. Others grow very well hidden as epiphytes on the sides of trees and along streams.
      Perhaps, in the spirit of sharing such wonders, I'll post a video of all these orchids. Maybe a few people might enjoy that.

      Yes, when I was in Sichuan I had the same experience - finding plants that even the experts in our group didn't know well. In fact our tour group found one new species of Amitostigma that was subsequently described, a NOID Habenaria that probably was also undescribed, and an alba form of the common Neottia acuminata. It was a blast seeing all those new plants. Please do post a video of your adventures, I'd love to see them!

      I'll have to do some digging because that was 15 years ago, but yes I think I'll have to make an effort to simply preserve and share all the orchid treasures that I saw.
      And yes, what an experience to find some orchids in your travels that stump even the experts! Worthwhile tourism in my books. Though sometimes difficult to organize without the proper contacts.

      It is the green penny fern, Lemmaphyllum microphyllum, a common epiphytic fern in the warm humid climates of east Asia.

      Excellent, your videos are highly informative and your camera work is great. I love seeing the woodlands and plants of Japan. I also really liked how you replanted the little baby orchid since it slid out of position, that is totally something I would do too.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  7 лет назад

      Yes, Japan has some cool things left, even near the big cities. I probably didn't have to replant the washed out plant since they seem to just wash down hill and take root again. Like you though, I couldn't resist. From what I've read about this species, individual plants are short lived, perhaps no more than 5 or 6 years. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Should you tell people where they are?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Kathy. It does seem counterintuitive to mention where they live, but within orchid circles online the whereabouts of this population has been long known. On the Japanese side of the internet it is common to see blog posts and photos of them on this mountain.
      The other issue is finding them. If you are determined, you will eventually locate them. That said, they are tiny things and are of little interest to most, even orchid enthusiasts. So in terms of humans taking them, I don't think that will be much of a problem.
      Thanks for watching! Tom

      Yes, there are many species of "jewel orchid" found throughout southeast Asia. This particular species has been only found on the island of Kyushu in southern Japan so far. I would call this plant an interesting species, not beautiful.
