    Good, honest review. You actually rode it for several thousands of miles instead of just a press launch. It's also good to hear about the quirks, something every single bike I've ever ridden has (no such thing as a perfect motorcycle nor perfect riders). Love your videos! Always look forward to them!

    Darn good evaluation of the Pan Am. All those buttons could stand to be back lit as well. There was a flash to help the start up procedure. I never experienced a real issue because they flashed it before I took delivery.
    I'm getting excited for my tank bag and top box to arrive. For the time being my pan Am "Bender" is a road warrior, splitting those Bay area lanes as I travel between Humboldt Co and San Luis Obispo Co. I put up a couple rambling videos on the 46, and the 101 South of Salinas on one of my rides.
    The pan Am is a total sweetie.

    WOW! You solved the starter issue! This issue has been lingering on the web for awhile, and nobody has understood the issue. You just saved Harley a lot of sales. So the starter issue is actually a good thing! Because if the starter didn't have an overload protection, it could shear off the starter gears, or burn out the motor. The starter is actually designed to be more reliable, but dropping out when it's overloaded. You hear of big block Chevy engines snapping starter gears or flywheel gear teeth, from the engine being so hard to turn over and the timing being too far advanced, etc. So a starter overload protection is a good idea.

  • @AliasTekTV

    The starter issue is actually a combination of it having a pretty high compression ratio (Even coming from Harley, gave me an odd look) and the engine most likely not having an automatic compression release on the camshaft. Most modern high compression motorcycles have them usually outside 4 cylinder sportbike engines. I think if this is the case then the starter does in fact seem undersized or the starter gear reduction system is not low enough to give the desired amount of torque to overcome the high compression.
    If it's as bad as people have talked about I could see HD making an update/recall on this as it has the possibility of leaving you stranded if enough failed attempts occur (Flooding after a tipover. Yes it's fuel injected but oil from a breather into the airbox can do this as well.)

My ‘15 VStrom 1000 tops out near 100hp. That add’l 50hp would be very enjoyable indeed. Hope to test ride one soon. Do wish the words and numbers on the display were bigger; as I get older, those things matter. lol

    Really down to earth and useful information. Thanks. Unfortunately this is not a bike for me (I do not like heavy ginormous adventure bikes). Only bike that would be interesting as an off road bike for me, would be the Yamaha T700. Back in the days I have ridden Yamaha XT250, XT600 Ténéré, Suzuki TS250 off road (more like a motocross bike).
    For now I'll ride my bike (2019 Fat Boy) and loving it.

    I think they really hit it out of the park on this one. BMW and Triumph had decades to perfect their craft. This is HD's first shot. Saying it's in the same league as them is huge praise.
    The buttons do seem overwhelming, but is it really worse than digging through menus with a wheel or D-pad to get to an option buried deep? I feel like as weird as the buttons may seem at first, I appreciate having physical buttons for everything instead of just a joystick and constantly having to look down to see what menu I'm in. Cruise control stock is pretty fucking epic. It's utter BS that more bikes that are FBW don't have this feature out of the box. It's a huge savings on your hand for long rides on the hwy.
    That suspension drop is pretty epic. I'm short, only 5'9", and 1000cc adv bikes kinda suck for me because I'm only ever tippy-toeing them, which sucks ass on dirt when you have to put a foot down. I was going to get an F750, but now I'm kicking the idea of one of these around. I absolutely loved the 4000 miles I did on an R1200, but I had to emergency pull-over due to a blow-out and I almost lost it in the ditch because I didn't have the height to stand it back up, it's really too tall if you're a shorter guy.

    • @shadowrider7072
      @shadowrider7072 2 года назад +1

      I joke that I'm built like a gorilla. Big torso, long arms, and short/stumpy legs. I wear a 28 inseam in my jeans, but my arms stick out of every jacket I own. That said, I'm able to hop on the Pan American with the default seat seat to the low setting and the adaptive ride height option installed.
      I went ahead and ordered the reach seat just because some of the roads I drive on are at very steep and strange angles, so when I come to a stop I might be able to flat foot easily, and other times I might step "into the void" and feel like I am about to fall off a cliff! Actually pulled a muscle doing that on a ride. That said, I wouldn't be able to ride a BMW GS at all without taking my entire ass off the seat at every light.

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 2 года назад

      @@shadowrider7072 Haha, damn, yeah 28" inseam is shorter than me, I'm like 34" I think (I'd have to double check). That is fucking awesome that you're able to ride it just fine on the stock seat, def. gives me hope. I didn't even know they had a low seat for it.
      The R1200 is pretty easy to ride because the CoG is so low, but it's exactly like you said, when you're off-road on one, and you need to come to a sudden stop, you better hope to God you have footing on the side you need because if you have a shorter inseam, it is so damn hard to get a solid footing, and really frustrating, and even then the CoG is low, when it starts to lean over because you had a larger gap than you thought under your foot, it can be REALLY hard to right that SOB. It's the worst feeling ever. Same if you're trying to back up a slight hill and there's sand on the pavement - you can't get any traction when you're tippy toeing it - makes you really appreciate that reverse starter trick the Goldwings have.
      I think I need to ride one of these. It's def. a fair bit more expensive than the F750, and the F750 doesn't have the same height problems that the R1200 has (it's high, but not "fuck you" high), but damn this thing brings A LOT to the table - and I'm a sucker for cruise control b/c my right wrist falls asleep on the highway. Utter bullshit that most manus don't put it on while they have FBW, it's almost free for them to do it.

    • @shadowrider7072
      @shadowrider7072 2 года назад +1

      @@MrSlowestD16 That cruise control is a god send. I will never own a bike without it again, but I have 2 messed up wrists. I feel you on the "going to sleep" thing. Too many years of using power tools messed up the nerves.

      @MrSlowestD16 2 года назад

      @@shadowrider7072 Yeah, it's really a terrific invention on bikes. Did you ever have any issues with the bike when on the side stand and the camber was going away from you? As I’ve had this once on a test ride and even with the adaptive ride height it was difficult to get it upright as the ground was further away due to the camber?

    • @shadowrider7072
      @shadowrider7072 2 года назад

      Can't help you with the front end seeing as how that's subjective (and I like it), but I can tell you about the suspension on rough paved roads.
      I have the special version, and it handles crappy paved roads like a champ. I tend to ride out in the country/mountain backroads of NC, and those roads are either brand new or absolute crap without a lot of in-between. There is also a stretch of highway I ride that recently had the surface removed and hasn't been re-paved proper yet, so I've blasted up and down that road at 80mph quite a few times.
      Bike has been great on all occasions since you can adjust the suspension in the rider mode options. I created a special mode for that rough highway with the softest suspension to eat up the bumps and the move aggressive engine mapping and throttle to keep up with traffic and overtake trucks. Works like a charm.
      Only thing that feels smother on those crap paved roads is my Can-Am RT touring Spyder. Beats the snot out of my various Honda cruisers and triumphs. Makes my 2500 Silverado pickup feel like I'm driving in an earth quake by comparison.
      Also remember this bike is designed to be ridden standing up as an option. All you need to do is slap some tank grips on the side of the bike and maybe some risers if you are over 6 feet. I've hit some really stupid things and didn't feel anything by standing.

    OBERVATIONS
    Heres the *_thing_* about Harleys, i.e. facts that are well known...
    - Harley Davison's unreliability is historic and it rates far below Japanese bikes in reliability (shameful). Oh, remember AMF Harley's = Joke.
    - Harley Davison is on it's last leg & is trying everything to survive (changing their entire line up, electric bikes, now the Adventure area of sales).
    - HD customer NO-service is famous for not caring about the buyer.
    - It is becoming apparent Harley Davidson as a company is dying due to their mistakes.
    So Harley, historically is a _failure_ & is well known to make unreliable cycles & have _poor quality control._ Hence, most people that ride Harley's are mechanics & older.
    For the past 4 or more years Harley Davidson's bike sales have declined. In 2020 it went down 17.4%.
    Sad.
