Vassar's technique is so damned impeccable. His tone is gorgeous, his note choices are delicious and I love it when he slides up into position with double stops like. Masterful.
I play fiddle because of the brilliant Vassar Clements. As a piano player I had the pleasure of jamming with Vassar, John Hartford, John Herald, Bob Tanner and so many others at Terre des Hommes, Montreal summer of 1971. From then on I've been a fiddler. Thank you Vassar. Ne plus ultra!
Vassar is the American Stephane Grappelli ! There will never be another like him - completely original, stylistically distinct, and absolutely brilliant on every note.
Vassar does this with Gerry Garcia and David Grisman on Old and In the Way, 1973. Check out all the Old and In the Ways - Panama Red, Wild Horses, traditional, etc.
Ummm...what about John Hartford, Mark O'Connor, and Jerry Douglas, too, doing this OAITW classic? Vassar and I used to hang out at the IBMA awards in Owensboro, KY, Mucho years ago. Got a great shot of him and I and my band shrooming.....yeah, he loved to party!
@WyattD18 - Ummm...the names you mentioned have been in the video description since the day I uploaded it. Click under the video where it says "Show more" and you will see all the musician's names that are in this video.
John, Vassar and Tony all gone up home. I miss them.
Simply the best fiddler ever. Just fearless. Loved him so much.
So many legends on stage together
tony's solo has the most replays. and the way he raises the energy as he plays the last few notes is so effective

One of those fiddle players/musicians you can tell it’s him within a couple seconds of hearing him play. He’s my favorite fiddler as well
Ain't NOBODY could play like Vassar!

Very cool.
Vassar Clements made beautiful soulful music. His playing is an exceptional example of compactness of motion. His art is an American treasure.
One of my favorite Tony Rice breaks!
All of these guys are so good!
jerry douglas always killing it
There will never be another Vassar.
Mark O'Connor never ceases to amaze.
The fiddle Vassar is playing in this video was given to him by John Hartford. Both simply amazing people!
They were something, weren't they? God bless these guys ~
There are wizards. Wow. All stars like no other.
What a Great Tune.... first heard it on the "Old n In The Way ".. Vassar was in that line up 2!! 🎵👍🎶🎵🎶👍
Tony’s smile at 1:31 says it all ❤️
Those 3 are up there jamming and what a sound may that bring! You would have to use the saying 'other worldly' to describe that.. RIP Mr T
Hartford's break is one of the best banjo solos ever.
Agreed he sounds like Earl Scruggs. Tony’s break is one of the best tony breaks I’ve heard to. Also I didn’t know Marc o Conner played mandolin.
@@mikeatwell3646 and guitar!
Hartford added a jazz element to his Scruggs style that was unmatched man
Tony Rice...R.I.P❤
There's no getting better than this!
vassar is one of my faves! Its so good to see Tony and \Vassar play together here. Thankyou
Tony Rice - superb tone, on-the-spot timing, incredible syncopation, tasty licks, well conceived breaks, so far above the rest.
Jerry Douglas amazes me. All those guys, too.
Vassar is the American Stephane Grappelli !
There will never be another like him - completely original, stylistically distinct, and absolutely brilliant on every note.
Amen to that
i like VASSAR MORE , mr Grapelli is great but Vassar dont play as many notes but still sounds hot ,mo n orleans ,u could say .
my favorite fiddler by far
What a lineup!
Vassar had the coolest sweaters
Band e musica straordinaria !!
I have a cd with this tune and Vassar says that Dickie Betts came up with the name ‘Kissimmee Kid’ when they recorded it the first time.
John’s banjo solo absolutely floored me
This makes the player feel the roots
I saw Vassar live in the 1980s at a live music venue called My Father's Place in Roslyn ? New York. He was awesome!
All the greats! Man I loved this Never saw it before! But not the Old and in the Way style.Different players and Vassar. This is from a long time ago!
Who else but Vassar could craft a lick like 1:39 ?
Vassar put more into this one tune than God put into human DNA.
I was at this show. Vanderbilt University in Nashville Tn.. Most awsome.
Vassar does this with Gerry Garcia and David Grisman on Old and In the Way, 1973.

10-4 originalformula.....I wasn't being critical, though it seems that way!
bit more lively and colourful this one
I love Old & in the Way too but calling this song an "OAITW classic" is somewhat offbase historically
Vassar! You beast! 😊😊😊😊
john is the hide glue of a future in grass him and only a few could see 🦩🦩🦩bloody brilliant
