It really comes down to bending. I hate having to grip too hard to bend, so I set the string height such that I can easily grab a string and bend it without feeling like I've got to grip super hard to keep the string from slipping under my fingers.
In the fourth position box, you forgot to mention notes you can grab with your pinky while bending another. Like if you're bending the 13th fret on the B string, you can grab the 13th fret on the high E string with your pinky...
Hey anthony, thanks so much for the box videos!! I have been stuck in box 1 pentatonic forever and playing to tracks is so boring stuck in 1!! Greatly appreciated!!
@regelemihai Different strings, thicker tone in Box 4, plus you've got the option of using the E string in your licks. Personally, I never understood why, given the choice, someone would play Box 2 stuff in Box 4 though.
Box 4 looks like a pattern I've played for a long time. To me it's just the pattern where the root is on the 3rd string and mostly like the 4th box except I extend it up to the root on the 1st string and 5th on the 2nd string above it. I play my fastest blues licks in this position (blues shredding), although my go-to box has always been the Albert King. The BB King box is what I call my "country" box, throwing the major 3rd in. On rare occasions when I play country.
I like the tone, the reverb, the patient explanation and the camera angle. This is a discipline, and therefore requires motivation... ...you have provided it very well. Thank you.
Awesome lesson Athony; as usual. Just one thing about the switching of the positions seems not to go over too well in my mind. If the licks in box 4 are identical to the ones in box 2, why do players bother to play it? Isn't it easier to stick with box 2 without moving the entire action down the neck?
It’s a little thicker tone, and I find it easier to hit big bends on the b higher up the neck then on the e closer to the nut, but I have thought that before Forsure and I usually stick to box 2 myself lol
@FreaquedeMusique I probably sound tired because I shot it late at night rather than in the morning like I usually do. Also, Box 4 is my least favorite, and least played position, so not my favorite subject. And don't worry, Free Lesson Friday is a gift, not a promise, so if I don't feel like making a lesson, I won't :-)
this isn't a comment on box 4, but could you do a review on the Ibanez Bottom Booster? I want to use it with my TS-9 but was wondering what it was like.
From this angle your action looks fairly high. I know it's all personal preference but is there some reason behind it? I can't play a guitar that has action higher than the edge of a coin being able to slide under the 12th fret. I had the rare opportunity of playing Eddie Van Halen's Wolfgang back in '98 when they were here in Japan. Lowest action I have ever seen. I honestly don't know how his tech keeps it from fretting out.
I would like to know what amp you are using and what effects are being run there. I'm guessing it's some type of Fender and I hear the reverb. Anything else in there? What gauge of strings are you using?
@gr8bluesgtr I'm a beginner as far as this subject is concerned :-P But in my mind, when I see those are identical notes, the licks also seem to be identical (with the exception of the ones you can do on the E string that do not correspond to box 2). The idea that the tone is thicker in box 4 does make sense, though. I never thought or noticed it before.

another great lesson on phrasing,,thanks for the shapes in box 4 as it relates to the other boxes!
Tired or not it is still a great lesson, and build on what I am learning from my guitar lessons. Thanks

Anthony how is it that the action is so high, yet the intonation is perfectly fine?? What is the secret?!
Thanks Anthony. Great work and very helpful :)

@opcer his name is anthony just so you know.
the thicker tone is really really important - sounds totally different.

The thicker tone is in box 4, right?
