I see tons of comments about the braided ground strap rotted off the trans. I did see it 👀. However this has NOTHING to do with the 2 wire A/C pulse generating speed sensor. Don't get distracted by something that doesn't apply to the current problem or you will go down rabbit holes. Think of it this way if you can't stop thinking it is, or could be the problem. If I had removed it completely you would never have know it was there and would never have thought it was the problem because you would have been focused on the facts and not the distractions 😉 And no... the missing ground strap could not "cook" or ruin the sensor in any other way. You have to trust me folks.....
His honesty should never be questioned, This man could of easily edited his mistakes out but kept it in the video, Most of my lessons come from my mistakes .. That is a REAL man working on these videos, they are great !
I love how Eric talks to us as if we are actually standing there in the shop. SMAC videos are addictive because after a few minutes I feel like we HAVE to get this fixed.
The best part is that he talks to us like he we are his friend and he’s giving us an inside and exclusive, privileged insight to his work! You know how when friends goof up and make mistakes and everything like that everything is still good. make fun of maybe a possible miss spoken word, things like that so don’t worry Eric, it’s all good. You had me laughing pretty good so I greatly appreciate it from this partially disabled but fully depressed dude down in Connecticut who works on cars and a lot of other things. Thanks for all that you do, and all the time you spend editing videos, and all that sort behind the scenes that we don’t see, so you can make these videos! Thank you again. Hey Eric, I am an automotive wiring technician (I work on classic cars, trucks, motorcycles, trailers, etc.), and I have cerebral palsy and I know what it's like to be frustrated with communicating. When you said "I do know in my head I speak perfectly clear though", that is exactly how it is for me all the time. I think you're doing a great job with your speech and it will get better soon. Your perseverance with your dental appliance has inspired me to try to use mine more regularly, even though I can barely understand myself with them in. I always tell people the same as you about doing things, I guess it's time I take my own medicine! 😁 Thank you Eric!
Don’t worry about the speech Mr. O! As long as your not in pain that’s all we care about. We still listen to the wealth of information your share. Thanks for everything.
Your sense of humor and general demeanor is just throughly enjoyable to watch. We get to see the diag process, hear some funny jokes. Easily my favorite channel on RUclips. First I've seen Andy in a video, pretty cool to see you roll into his shop like that. Project looks pretty cool too.
Worry less about your speech, and just continue doing what you do best, teaching us all a methodical approach to problem solving. It's a skill less used now days what with everyone just loading the parts gun and firing away. Keep up the great work.
As you say, those old style VR sensors can easily float their own ground independent of the transmission ground, since they make their own voltage and current, with the processor only coding frequency. For some reason I really liked this video, it has a perfect mix of entertainment and education. My wife caught me laughing out loud when you found your SMA shirt used by Andy as a shop rag.
Besides the entertainment value of the SMA videos, Mr O has done one thing for the auto mechanic community. He has shown that a logical approach is the only way to diagnose the modern auto.
Best Toyota transmission real I've seen,ever... Rare problem solved. Then rechecked for intermittent possibilities and found true cause and fixed. PS: I don't know what He's talking about.... I perfectly understood every word he said. Good job Eric
Poppin in on Andy's shop was very cool!! I love the small town vibe, and it adds another layer of interest to your channel. Big part of wrenching is BSing with your buds. Hope you can include little gems like that more often.
I am not a mechanic but I do like problem solving and the knowledge that can be learned from step by step gathering of information to find a solution to any problem. Your videos are great.
I really enjoy the variety when you work with your brother, or in this case, Andy. It’s fun to see people working on other types of machines. Hopefully, you can add more farming and tractor videos soon. Also, I’ve been wearing my family’s SMA Christmas presents around town (KC). Makes me feel smart like Eric O!
I love your scotty comment about the toyotas. Excellent catch on that sensor failure under heat. I could tell it was bugging the crap out of you as to "why" it acted up. No trust issues here Eric. Love the big rig segment
I’m not a mechanic, but I watch your videos often. It's always refreshing to watch someone who's good at their job. You think and speak in "mechanic/technician, a language I don’t even understand. Yet, it's interesting. An honest, competent mechanic is worth his weight on gold.
Mr. O, I just wanted to say thank you for this video! I have an avalon that has been having the exact same issue, and it goes away when she's cold. The heat is the main issue I noticed, and since it's a Florida car, it'll happen just from being left in the sun. Great video, and always helpful!
I'm a new viewer and not a car guy AT ALL, but I love this channel! What keeps me coming back is the thinking-out-loud problem solving process. I don't care about your new lisp. You communicate just fine. Please keep doing what you're doing.
You are a bad a** my friend. I have been automotive Tech for 25 years. you make wiring problems that I will pull my hair out over and over. simple I've learned a lot from you I'm opening my own shop dream Come true 25 years in the making. My skills are more Orientated In Engine mechanical Drive train And differential. I'm a little dyslexic and I have to constantly double check myself with electrical stuff to make sure that my connections are solid for my test equipment. And I'm not over thinking. You are truly one of the best Technicians I've seen Probably the best on RUclips. And I'm no dummy Let my certifications lapse but used to be a California Smog technician. In my experience speed sensors are just like Cam and crank sensors Mess up High temp hot soak and then start working again 10 minutes later Sometimes no code make you nervous to drive the vehicle down the road cause you know you're gonna get stuck
Talk about deja vu! I had the exact same symptom on my personal 2007 Tundra last year except it was a P0717 (ISS fault). Resistance on the sensor was in range and all that just like yours. I didn't have a scope (though this problem was a factor in deciding to get the AES Uscope). Since they're the same sensor, I ended up swapping the ISS and VSS and my P0717 turned into a P0722. Swaptronics for the win. If that wasn't an option, I would have winged a sensor at it anyway, so you're not alone in that. Good ol hope and prayer auto repair and tryignostics when it's your own vehicle 😆
A few days ago you ask, what kind of videos we would like to see. All videos where you share your knowledge are good videos. Content where you do repairs of the same kind are just as good, as videos of new repairs. Nobody learns their lesson's on the first day of school. Keep up the good work Eric, and keep them coming.
Eric don’t even worry about your speech, we understand you just fine and we appreciate the videos, if you really think about it you are inspiring people out there to do what you do or become as productive as you
Again, as a Tundra owner i love the knowledge. Scotty did lie. But they dont break very bad. I love how you proved the sensor was bad. You in the end were dead sure what it was.
It’s hard to find something to say, that’s not already been said several times, so I just want to thank you for your great videos. Your honesty and integrity shine through in a genuine way. Always enjoy seeing Mrs. O, your kiddos, and your Kat. Happiness on display! For those who are not mechanics, let me tell you, Mr. O is the real deal!!!
My son just got a expander himself. You two sound the same. Especially the S sound. Played him a ‘South Main’ video to show him he not alone in his speech impediment. Tell you the same as him that it will get better with time. Love your video’s.. Keep up great work.
I use a great method for avoiding the seatbelt dinger. I put the seat belt on. London cab drivers are exempt from wearing seat belts but most of us just put them on anyway. It's a lot better than bullseying the windscreen.
Back in the 70s and 80s I disabled every seatbelt dinger, buzzer, bell and monotonous female computer voice. In the 90s I bought a car with passive shoulder belts -- no defeating them. I learned to put my belt on. I put it on every time now. It's a good idea, but I hate that I was socially engineered into accepting it.
@@jamespfitz Nobody likes being told what to do even if means getting injured to prove their point. Everybody thinks that they are such a good driver that those accidents only happen to stupid people. I also know that nobody cares what my opinion is. Stay safe it's a jungle out there.
I know I'm repeating myself, but if I had those dental appliances doing their thing, I'm sure I'd be curled up in a ball in a corner somewhere, whimpering. The fact that you're still out there making video's for us is greatly appreciated.
Who would have thought that the guy who took the time to test was almost led astray by the results while the guy who just flings parts would have just gotten it fixed. Eric, sometimes you are just too good for your own good. Thanks for keeping it real.
You are the man Eric O! Im 32, and I smoked for 14 years and I didn't take care of my teeth well. So I've been suffering from some dental issues myself. I will eventually need dental work too. I use sensodyne rapid relief toothpaste and if I don't use it, I have horrible teeth pain. It's amazing stuff and helps me tremendously. We watch for you and your incredible knowledge and the way you teach us and explain things. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't know half the things I know about testing and diagnosing. I'll admit I was a parts cannon shooter for awhile. I'd read the engine light codes and just replace that part. But then I started realizing it's not always what the scanner says. And now I double and triple check before I make the call. If there's any haters in here, get em out. I'm gonna be ordering my SMA shirt this week! I've sent a lot of people your way too and it's the only automotive work and diagnostic channel I go to. Thank you for your dedication and doing videos for us when you don't feel like it. And taking time from your workday to shoot videos for us! You leaving the mistakes and second guesses in the videos is what separates you from other "mechanics". You don't hide anything and that is just awesome. Thank you again. -Tyler H from Ohio.
I like it when you go for a test drive around town I'm amazed at the lack of people walking around Loved you having a chat with your mate Andy you should include more of that just call in & say hi Oscar
Thank you for bringing back a child hood memory. I'm in my mid 40's. The way you talk reminded me of the cartoon Duck Tales from the late 80,s Make me happy. thank you!
Those of us that need a vehicle fixed know it’s not hard to find a mechanic, but it is hard to find a good one with integrity. They only thing that changes with Eric is his hair color and now his speech. All other atriabuts are still the same over the years we have watched. A good man, father ,and husband are definitely his best atriabuts. Nice work sir.
Your speech is not how you think it is, it’s much clearer now. There is so much knowledge gained here so we just focus on your abilities to get to the end result. Your customers are very fortunate to have your talents nearby.
Always educational as well as entertaining. I'm glad that you are continuing with content in spite of the speech issues. It does remind me of a story that I learned in grade school. I may remember it wrong, but it was about a young man in ancient Greece who had a speech impediment. He learned to speak more clearly by putting pebbles in his mouth and forcing himself to speak. Eventually, he became a great orator. By the way... "Welcome back to Sauf Mein Oddo" is kind of a cool way to start all your videos. 💪
A few years back, I got veneers on my front teeth, and afterward I had for the longest time a horrible lisp, but it did go away. I’m confident you’ll get over it as well. Good luck. Cheers.
Great find. I had an Impala speed sensor go bad. Installed a new aftermarket one and it worked fine for a couple days then started having intermittent problems. Took it to a dealer mechanic friend and he couldn’t find anything wrong. He was checking resistance and inadvertently bumped it and resistance when to zero. So much for new parts. Installed new OEM good to go.
Sometimes Mr. Eric O, we all are so close to the problem we can't see it at first. I think you are the world's greatest mechanic/automotive technician. I might be slightly biased, but I wish you could work on my wife's jeep. It's been at the shop for 6 weeks for front-end work, wheel bearing assembly, and ball joints. I called to check on it, and we are working on it is the reply. I don't know if it is a problem getting parts or not. I just wish they would give updates. It is just my wife's daily driver she just likes the 1999 Jeep Wrangler. I hate calling them because I don't want to pressure them, but would appreciate knowing.
The very next video RUclips played? You repsiting a Dodge Ram that spits and sputters! You'll get the hang of speaking with braces soon. Usually after the sores on the inside of your mouth go away. My daughter went through the whole headgear type setup. Keep up the honest work Sir!
Don't worry 'bout the speach thing. I went through something similar last year and the difference you're hearing is not as noticeable to others as it is to you. I mean, "Sufferin' succotash !" a little change is good for everybody and it'll be over before you know it. You have a good brain and a beautiful wife. You are doing better than about 95% of the rest of us. Just keep doing what you're doing and you will always have a decent audience. Later.
I wanted to just thank you the videos and the fact that you like cars and live in NY mad me get back into working on cars again so again I say THANK YOU
I've seen and replaced a lot of bad sensors but never ran into one that just went open circuit with a low amount of heat. Good thinking ; my work motto was fix it right the first time so I appreciate your work !!!!!! And I did subscribe too
I like the Toyota videos! Probably not many dealers around there, but currently working on my 4th gen 4runner 4.7. I know you take 'em as they come; what people bring in. I think your videos are great! Cool seeing that sensor fail with a little heat. God Bless you. Take care buddy. 👍
😂 Fellow Rust-Belter here, in the Detroit area. I love the broke woven green-crusty wire, at ~4:38, as you’re showing us the sensors. Keep up the great video Mr O!
What a fantastic thorough diagnostic process Don’t beat yourself up Eric I was so impressed the way you checked every possible issue So many times you can undo a connector and it fixes the issue but then heat it up WOW brother so so so impressed and the Daffy Duck impression made me piss my pants😆😆😆🇬🇧👍
Commenting, to indicate I understood what you were saying at the end of the video, lol. Keep the vids coming. Your content is great. Loved it when you realized that the lower amplitude of that sensor was because the lower RPM.
Eric, not sure if this helps, but I also saw that the transmission ground wire was completely rusted off. I replaced mine on my 2010 Tundra a few years ago just because the engineers placed it there for some reason, usually to reduce EMI or EMF noises generated by ignition systems. Thanks for all of the great videos!!! I hope you have yourself a great day also!!!!!
Great to see some Semi stuff i worked in a small mom and pop shop for 10 years til they closed. then went to Heavy trucks working on Kenworth , Isuzu and Hinos
Hey Eric! Hope you see this out of the thousands of comments. But I own a shop in California and I would love to see your diagnostics steps on a no crank no start situation for this type of vehicle in the video. Preferably the 4wd version with the outcome of being a starter needing to be replaced. I had to tackle this at my shop. The “easiest” I found was to take the starter apart on the car and remove it and then take the new starter apart and reassemble once in the car to avoid removing the front wheel drive axle
Watching your vids I liked how you show us and teach us things instead of just changing parts and that's it. I've learned a lot watching you and, even though I will never be a mechanic like you it's nice to know some of these things that might help me and my brother working on my truck in the yard. And if we run across an issue you've probably covered it on a video we can go back and watch. That all being said the one thing that even made me like you more is when you were concerned about the cat and letting it inside. A great mechanic AND a great human being who's both concerned about his customers and the littlest of things like animals. My respect for you increased 100% more than the 100% it already was. Thanks for being you. Take care.
I was told the speed sensors can not be intermittent. You proved that can be! Our Saturn ran and then quit. Later it would run again. Changed the speed sensor and it always ran fine.
That’s a Georgia accent, don’t worry about it! 🤔 your dedication to the trade is unmatched. Everyone that watches your channel should learn something from every post. Even if it’s how to hold a camera! Thanks
Hey Eric, you never disappoint me in the way you work things out. Making mistakes is part of being human, not going down the rabbit hole is what really matters. I have to hand it to you in the way you think things through, never assume anything without testing every angle of the situation. You never disappoint in teaching me something new to think about. Have a nice day😊
I beg to differ...in that as you say "if I can do it, you can do it." - I don't think I can do it, like you do it...for numerous reasons. That's why I prefer to let those do what they do..normally, vs me trying at it...! - Kudos to you.
I have a 2008 Tundra and had the same issue with the output speed sensor, resistance tested fine cold and when it was in the truck and ran for a few it would throw the code. Replaced the sensor and the issue was resolved. This also happened to on the input speed sensor and same thing, tested good on resistance unit it was warm then failed, which was only a year later.

I always trust Eric O. I would like to interview the engineer who decided that was a good place for that ground though.
We trust you mr o good vid as always
Redundant grounding.
It's interesting though, the more electronics you have the more you need to make certain that you have a good ground I guess.
His honesty should never be questioned, This man could of easily edited his mistakes out but kept it in the video, Most of my lessons come from my mistakes .. That is a REAL man working on these videos, they are great !

Eric you have the best automotive repair channel hands down!
Never a dull moment. It never gets old. I really enjoy watching you buddy.
I like it when you go for a test drive around town I'm amazed at the lack of people walking around Loved you having a chat with your mate Andy you should include more of that just call in & say hi Oscar
I saw seven slivery snakes slowly sliding southward... say it 10 times very fast, should get you one million views!!!
Thank you for bringing back a child hood memory. I'm in my mid 40's. The way you talk reminded me of the cartoon Duck Tales from the late 80,s Make me happy. thank you!
Thank God you was able to put some heat on that sensor to see it failed that was totally awesome love the videos
Thank you for the videos on the Tundra. I have a 2015 1794 Tundra. My favorite truck
Junk.
That was Demosthenes.
A few years back, I got veneers on my front teeth, and afterward I had for the longest time a horrible lisp, but it did go away. I’m confident you’ll get over it as well. Good luck. Cheers.
You sir are a class act. Love your channel and have learned a lot from watching over the years.
Later.
I wanted to just thank you the videos and the fact that you like cars and live in NY mad me get back into working on cars again so again I say THANK YOU
Man you actually sound like a real mechanic now with the dental work!!! Now they won’t hate so much!
Rescued a Toyauto, rescued a cat...the Avoca superhero! I can see a cape and tights in your future!
I've seen and replaced a lot of bad sensors but never ran into one that just went open circuit with a low amount of heat. Good thinking ; my work motto was fix it right the first time so I appreciate your work !!!!!! And I did subscribe too
That was very entertaining!! Especially the Peterbilt tour! Thanks for starting my day on a high note.
That’s why Olde truckers never quit/die, the just get a new Peterbuilt.....or rebuilt. 🤷♂️😏👍🏻💪😎
I like the Toyota videos! Probably not many dealers around there, but currently working on my 4th gen 4runner 4.7. I know you take 'em as they come; what people bring in. I think your videos are great! Cool seeing that sensor fail with a little heat.
God Bless you. Take care buddy. 👍
Morning Mr O! Thanks for keeping us entertained and educated 🙂
😂 Fellow Rust-Belter here, in the Detroit area. I love the broke woven green-crusty wire, at ~4:38, as you’re showing us the sensors. Keep up the great video Mr O!
What a fantastic thorough diagnostic process
Don’t beat yourself up Eric I was so impressed the way you checked every possible issue
So many times you can undo a connector and it fixes the issue but then heat it up WOW brother so so so impressed and the Daffy Duck impression made me piss my pants😆😆😆🇬🇧👍
This one was awesome. Failed when hot... I just love your deductive reasoning. Definitely a wise choice leaving the new sensor in there!
I would pay some good money to hear you say "Sufferin' Succotash!" PLEASE. That would be gold!
Thermal intermittents are the worst to diagnose. GREAT JOB!!
That was a nice truck Eric i’m still watching some RUclips videos from 5 and 6 years ago keep up the good work mate
You’re the man. Seriously. I’m so glad you share your knowledge and experience. God
Bless you and your family! Keep up the good work, Eric O! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Commenting, to indicate I understood what you were saying at the end of the video, lol.
Keep the vids coming. Your content is great.
Loved it when you realized that the lower amplitude of that sensor was because the lower RPM.
Don’t worry about the speech. We got ya!! Thanks for taking us along. Great troubleshooting!!
Good diag, torch test and repair. That truck in Andy's shop is fantastic!
Great to see some Semi stuff i worked in a small mom and pop shop for 10 years til they closed. then went to Heavy trucks working on Kenworth , Isuzu and Hinos
Another great diagnosis Eric, even you fell into it, you still fixed the truck. Customers are always job 1! Without them, we wouldn't have a JOB!
I can imagine how frustrating the speech situation must be for you. No worries on my end, glad you’re taking care of yourself!
Thanks again for the video. You are by far my favorite mechanic on RUclips. Keep up the amazing job, and keep posting the videos. Thanks again 😁👍
I understand everything you said no need to apologize. The best on the tube just keeps kicking out videos. 😎🤺
Thanks
Thanks!
Intelligent approach and confirmation 👍.
Eric getting his weekly diesel fix 🧐🏨🏥.
Great work and video Dr O.
Thanks for sharing
Hey Eric, you never disappoint me in the way you work things out. Making mistakes is part of being human, not going down the rabbit hole is what really matters. I have to hand it to you in the way you think things through, never assume anything without testing every angle of the situation. You never disappoint in teaching me something new to think about. Have a nice day😊
Hey Eric, a can of freeze spray along with a heat gun can really help sometimes. Any electronics seller has the stuff. Love your videos!
Flip a can of canned air upside down for cold
@@davidsato8756 But don't huff it!
I beg to differ...in that as you say "if I can do it, you can do it." - I don't think I can do it, like you do it...for numerous reasons. That's why I prefer to let those do what they do..normally, vs me trying at it...! - Kudos to you.
Perfect!! This is where the old saying "I thought I was wrong, but I wasn't" comes from! lol Good catch and as always, great reasoning!
I'm an Aussie, you sound OK to me. I finally understand you.
Eric O doing a drive by with the parts cannon! FIRE
