Hard topic…you did well trying to share your thoughts! I relate to your dilemma, I LOVE fashion, I love it for the creativity, the fun, the self expression…but I very rarely buy new! And yet, I obviously count on someone else to buy it and discard it eventually…so again, it’s a very real dilemma. Wanting to wear creations that excite you, yet not wanting to partake in the “ugly” side (child labor, pollution, waste…) of fashion. I love watching fashion runway shows, yet, at the same time I want it to stop. All that to say, I do wish for a happy healthy earth, so our overconsumption is probably what is most likely where most of the blame lies. The job aspect is interesting, I don’t know how I feel about that defense…. Okay, I won’t ramble more, but I appreciate you sharing your “crisis “, lots of food for thought!☺️💛☺️
I agree with you very much. I also used to be strictly for thrifting and against fast fashion. It made me a condescending person, especially towards people in my life who couldn't thrift because it wasn't available to them.
Of course thrifting is better than fast fashion, but you can also have an overconsumption problem if you thrift too much. When you’re wearing your fast fashion long (because you chose a piece in a relatively good material) and treat it well it can turn out not that bad. I think the bigger problem is that consumption is easier than getting creative with what you already own. That can happen if you thrift too much as well as if you buy too much fast fashion.
Laura ~ I wish you well on your journey. Whenever I see a butterfly, it reminds me that God does, in fact, care about beauty. That is not a manmade thing. Fashion = Beauty.
Realy good talk on the end there, you made realy good points. I think that we just need to buy and consume less of everthing - Food (variety), wat to big houses, clothes, apliances . We will still have fashion, architecture, high-tech and pretty much still Everthing and the world will regulate itself naturaly to a less consumerism capitalist behaviour. That should and have to be tought to children in schools right along with economics. In short we are as individuals have to buy less of EVERYTHING.
I totally agree with you but I do think the fashion industry could step it up! Make things from recycled fabrics, rework already made items, promote clothing recycling. There are options to do it in a very sustainable way. But this goes with every major company. Instead of producing cheap shit that falls apart or doesn’t work after a season. We need to do better. PS- I love the jumper! ❤
I always love your outfits!! Totally also don't watch tv for months and then binge haha! I can't do anything else once i get into a show so i have to hold myself back from even starting 😆
Yep, the big questions in life. When you really think about it, there are so many industries that employ people but are really not good for the planet and humanity. I personally wish I had gotten into thrifting earlier in life because I love fashion AND I am a big penny pincher :). The helping the planet is a very big bonus so now that is mostly what I do when comes to fashion.
Curious to see what you think about Three Body Problem -- I only got about one quarter in before I lost interest, but if you finish it I'll def give it another go!
There's always dilemma with sustainability.. but I've recently been very interested to start to sew my own clothes, to be able to use more natural materials, designs I want to wear, and to gain more skills. I would like to see less global fashion companies, and more local artisans/creatives creating for their communities.
I see fashion more as a business rather than an important center for creativity. If there was no more fashion industry, there would still be people who are creative with what they wear, the popularity of so many cores over the last few years has shown us that. In relation to jobs, if i have to choose between saving earth (which is also creating a lot of new employment opportunities) or keeping the fashion industry as it currently is, it's an easy choice and that is coming from someone who really enjoys fashion
I agree! We can’t enjoy fashion if we don’t even have an earth to inhabit. But I do think if the fashion industry shut down we would be looking at a catastrophic outcome to economies. I hope we can build on regulations for better manufacturing and laws for safe environments and evolve that into planet saving jobs and innovations.
I also *just* bought three body problem. I'm a little intimidated to start because of the heavy math and science i know is in there🤭 the show on Netflix was so amazing, and I can't wait to see what comes next. Also, Grey's Anatomy for life📣 well... the first half of the series... post plane crash is hard for me to watch🤭 but everything that comes before is television gold✨️
Appreciate hearing your thought! Human behavior is a force to be reckon with and we are creatures of habit who needs to be clothed and express themselves with tools of creativity and beauty. Fashion is necessary and a tool but the fashion industry as it is, is not necessary and not being a tool used for the good of and for people. Greed is high and everyone is affected by either lack of money or abundance of money, which makes people who haven't been taugth that money is just a tool that is supposed to be used for good of humanity and people. Way too often people don't care about other people but has one thing that makes them "special" and saught after and therefore succesful. Those peope benefit from other people in hurtful and unethical ways and they get away with it, just because it gives the consumer something they wouldn't maybe have had otherwise - cause they too want to feel their confidence rise and feel important or special. And beautiful. But those who want to feel important or special usually tries to make up for something else and it can go very wrong. If everybody took care of themselves, their health, their homes, their things and clothes like we used to, because we didn't have access to a lot of things we have today, and taught people and our children the value of all those things, we would have a very different fashion industry and even world. It needs to be taught and skills and tools must be passed down. Quality over quantity in everything. Literally everything. And building strong principles with big convictions. We are, at the and of the day, just passing by here. We are only caretakers of this world and those around us. We are valuable and everything in the earth is too. The earth in itself and galaxies are valuable and reflects an intelligent designer, beauty and force. And so do we. At least thats what I am convinced of.

i would do some Australian Tv shows you might like , The kettering incident , Glitched , Bloom ... I know loads more but i can't remember them right now 🤣
A show called ascension, and another called invasion are pretty good. Plus the Australian movie 'these final hours' makes you wonder what you would do. Sidenote, I really enjoyed the tvshow Lovecraft country, it is a lot more than it looks in the first episode. It explores the horror fiction of hp Lovecraft through the lense of racism in America (its a book as well as a tv show)
First on the Greys Anatomy, I completely agree with the “why do we put ourselves through that emotional torture” … on the recommendation side of things, if you haven’t seen The Expanse, it’s spectacular. (It’s a book series too)
I feel fashion has a purpose as expression and a reflection of who we are as a culture. You look as fashion from the 1960’s and 70’s and you can see where the collective mind of the country was going. Women wearing pants for the first time! My grandmother never owned a pair of pants in her life due to her age and the way she was raised. I do believe we should not participate in fast fashion under any circumstances. It is a promotion of exploitation of child labor, cheap material not meant to last and a huge contribution to the landfill problem.

i agree! i feel lucky i have the free time to thrift it takes a lot of time to find something that is suitable for what i am looking for and fits.
I agree with you very much. I also used to be strictly for thrifting and against fast fashion. It made me a condescending person, especially towards people in my life who couldn't thrift because it wasn't available to them.

Well said! The answer (in my opinion) is to use what you have. Any over consumption isn’t healthy for our planet.
