- Can you Grow an Apple Tree from Seed? You may have asked yourself this question before, I know I have. I’m here to tell you that you can, and I can show you how! I harvested Apples from a tree I planted after only 3 years!! Now I have my own Apple variety, the Prigioni Apple!! I have now been growing this Apple for 10 years and it brings a smile to my face everyday I go out and see it, not to mention all the fruit it produces for me!

I did a science project with my kindergarten students with apple seeds. They themselves took the seeds out of apples, and wrapped them in wet paper towels. I took them home to put in my fridge. When they showed signs of sprouting, I brought them back to class and the kids planted them in cups. They each ended up with a little apple tree to bring home! It was so fun! Now I’m going to do it for myself with your inspiration. Thanks!
When my kid was in 1st grade, he would save all the apple seeds and germinate them. After 3 years, I have 9 apple trees. They are not producing yet, but I'll probably have to remove some from my backyard in the next few years.

My parents house backs up to an unused pasture. An apple tree showed up a number of years ago and now produces large, sweet, gold apples with a nice pink blush that are ready to harvest around the first week of august. Easily the best seedling apple tree I’ve ever found!
Look up the Dorsett Golden Apple. Your description of the apples on that random tree that grew reminds me of it.

I came close to your experience when I owned a home: One day I was mowing the lawn, and noticed a rather healthy looking , tiny, tree growing. I steered my mower around it, and kept doing so. >> It grew into a 20-30 foot tall Mulberry tree! I was as thrilled as you were with what I had done! I enjoy eating Mulberries; still do. I "had" the tree for about 25 years. Although I lost my house and the tree is now gone; I still have the memories of it, and hope to get some land in the future and start things anew!

Oh yes, I can tell you now that I'll be watching this at least ten times. I'm interested in dwarf apple trees, and keeping them pruned small. Your advice on everything from soil to water to pruning is invaluable! Thanks James! Thanks Tuck!

@billyd7628 yep grocery store apple. It was from three different premium varieties and had planted 6 trees , three of which fruited and all three that fruited, when ripe were decent. To note I live in sub tropical climate so a pleasant surprise to have any fruit at all.
@@jmunsamy im gonna try with some cosmic crisp seeds i got. im in a very sub tropical place. as in basically only freezes like a few days a year on the years it does freeze. and the freezes are just 32f never under the 30s.
I like to plant random seeds around public where there are drip systems or near ponds and city lakes. Sunflowers are a great starter. The city should be a food forest. Maybe I will start mixing in apple and pear seeds.

Thanks for the update, James! Your first video about this years ago inspired me to try this. I kept seeds from my Kindercrisp apple tree, which was pollinated by my neighbor's tree (unknown variety), and planted them in the fall of 2021. In spring (2022) only 1 germinated, but it grew fast! A rabbit chewed it down to the snow line the first winter, but it came back in spring 2023 and surpassed the previous year's growth that was lost. It's now protected (fenced in) so I'm excited to see what happens next spring! I can't wait for the day that I get to taste an apple from my own unique variety!

I wonder if I can plant an apple tree by dropping a few apples on the ground in the fall? This is how nature does it, and the seeds would experience stratification over the winter. Has anybody had any luck with this method?
I did it, and it worked
I haven't tried that before of letting the seeds out in the winter but there is this one time I have grown apple seeds from the pink lady apples what I have noticed about the pink lady apples the seeds in them are usually sprouting I do think for easy growing I would recommend the pink lady apples
This is awesome bro, lately I've been dreaming of lush vegatation & growing my own food stuffs. I have been experimenting with making apple fruit flour amongst other fruits to make bread & the endless possibilities with the right methods, I have been mind blown why bread companies haven't come up with different types of breads & my homemade bread makes store bought bread taste bland & boring!
Just the thought of walking through a garden & you're surrounded by the things you have grown from seed & feeling good that it's because of you that made it happen, & it helps you to love & appreciate yourself better, it's therapeutic, just hope that it doesn't turn up feeling like a chore, because nobody really likes chores!😊

I grew a plant from an apple seed out of an apple I got from the Farmer's Market about a year ago and people told me it was going to turn into a crabapple,,,so I appreciate your correct information about growing from a seed out of an apple you ate 😅🍎 The plant is still alive too!! My Gradson and I have planted gala apple seed and now have seedlings sprouting up so far we have 13 that have came up we planted about 28 hills 3 seeds to each hill.
That's really cool! I also have my own apple going on, it is possibly a crossing between crabapple and a regional summer apple (a sort of sauce apple) that is really nice. This year it grew to 60 cm, from 20. So soon I'll also have fruit.

I planted apple seeds in a McDonald’s cup in my garage, just for fun after eating an apple. Long story short, it’s 5 days later and they are already sprouting. I heard that they needed to go through a cold period or some process to get them to germinate so I honestly didn’t expect anything to happen. But to my surprise this morning I checked all the seeds I planted and the apples are growing just breaching the surface of the soil
Thanks for another great video. An apple that grows true from seed is the Antonovka apple. I think it does good up to zone 8. I have lots of seedlings from other apples that will probably be crab apples but I need them as pollinators so I'm pretty happy.

I’m feeling confused on how you made it your own variety.
Today I planted two apricot seed that I have kept in my refrigerator for a couple of months. I bought the apricots at the store. I hope they are wonderful trees someday that I can give my grandchildren fruit from.

Such a fun video! I have several acres now to work with so my experiments of growing apples from seed aren’t that crazy after all lol. Last year I sprouted dozens of apple seeds and was so excited but a freeze killed them all as I was away from home. Sad. I do still want a honey crisp apple tree though. ☺️ Still experimenting is just so much fun so I’m excited I have the room to do it. I love the Prigioni apple tree! Beautiful! My, you are patient though ! 👍🏻

The problem with growing apples from seed is that since they need pollination to have a successful apple it’s common practice for commercial apple production to use crab apples as a pollenizer. Which is what I assume happened to your apple tree there as it looks very similar to a crab apple.

Same! I want dwarf or miniature trees, to keep them in control. I'll be looking at Stark Brothers, Rain Tree, and Bay Laurel as sources. I'll be paying special attention to climate hardiness and whether or not the trees need more than one planted near each other. James' videos with tips on pruning and care (like Surround Kaolin clay) will be invaluable as I go. Good luck to you!

We don't have apple tree in our country the Philippines but this month a planted a seed in a tissue and it sprouts.from now on it is already 20 days old and having a three leaves coming out.

Had a transplanted apple tree twice and nearly some decades old. Forgot the variety but looked like it's a HoneyCrisp and after a couple of decades it was producing over medium sized to large sized apples. What can you suggest to expedite the growth into larger apples instead of waiting a couple of decades. In Japan, they cut off multiple apples once the flowers had changed to fruits so that more of the nutrients would go to the remaining apples in the cluster. Will continuously doing it every year cause the apple to naturally grow into larger size? Also glad to see Tuck's still up and have a healthy appetite, my Yorkie Terrier had some great last months before it passed away after 11yrs.❤🍎
You should thin the fruit so there is only one apple per cluster and no fruit closer than 6” apart. You have to do it every year, the tree won’t “learn” to do it.
I've got two four year old apple trees from seed in the garden. No fruit yet, hoping they'll be edible and not crab apples😂
You can always graft another kind of apple tree to it if it’s not good
This would be neat to do and top graft domesticated apple scions to the tree.

We plant some apple seeds every couple of years. The strongest ones grow very vigorously. It took less than five years to get our first fruit from one. And seven years from the second. The first one is a lot like yours. My kids call them Cherry Apples. The second tree makes little yellow apples, tons of them, but they don't taste good. It's a very fun experiment.
Since starting to play with apple seeds, I've learned that my little red and yellow apples were probably cross pollinated by a crab apple and that most commercial orchards have crab apples to help with pollination for better fruit set.
So if I were to collect apples from trees with no crab apples around, any fruit bearing trees from those seeds would likely be bigger. That's my next experiment - to collect some seeds from some abandoned orchards in the area that do not have crab apples nearby.

I planted some germinated apple seeds (germinated in the apple) about two years ago. Mine is less than a foot tall at this point and I think it's not getting enough sun.
I wonder if it will be OK to move it or will I damage the tap root?

Crab apples are used as pollinators in commercial orchards. Collect seeds from an old orchard where there isn't crab apples present and your results will be much closer to the parent tree.
I`ve just found some Malus Pumila seeds in the cupboard. Just potted them and put outside in the cold. Cheers. I`ll get back in 10 years if they work out ok. :)

I've heard about needing to put your apple seed through a cold period but I just soaked my fresh seed in water over night and then sowed in soil and kept the soil moist about a week and a half later a seedling sprouted... But I know typically I won't have that luck again
