Travis I bought seeds from Hoss for the first time and did a comparison of Abe Lincoln tomatoes from Hoss and from another company I have been using Hoss was 100% germination the other 85%. I am pleased.
My favorite squash is patty pans. Easy to grow & delicious. Appreciate you explaining types of squash & cucumbers you like. God bless you from grandma Katie in Oregon. I wish we could plant as early as you do
Your videos are a joy, they allow me to dream about planting things that are still two months away for me here. I only have spinach, which I sowed in November, emerging from its winter dormancy, gaining a few weeks instead of sowing it now.
Another great video Travis. I just started my seed trays last week and the germination rate from Hoss’s is better than any other company I’ve purchased from. I can’t wait til it’s time to get these veggies out of the trays and into the ground! Thanks, Rob
Early taters are up and lookin purty thanks to this nice weather. Glad to see yall have finally dried out a bit up there. It warmed up so fast I had to shade cloth my spinach. Best onion patch I've ever had thanks to yalls video's. My favorite tool in the garden now is the stirrup hoe (besides my tillers)! It makes for quick, easy weedin! Thanks! Happy gardening!
I like the old-school crookneck squash, but this year I am going with Goldprize and Sunburst. Still too early for us in Central Kentucky. I usually plant these warm season crops the week of the Kentucky Derby (first Saturday in May). I am also trying max pack and stonewall cucumbers. I usually grow national pickling cucumbers. I had good luck with calypso last year.
This year I'm doing Slick Pik yellow squash and Sunburst from your seed and Dixie Hybrid and Summerpac. I'm trying Expedition for the first time like you and National Pickling cucumbers from your seed. I also planted Pick a Bushel again. I planted it last year and didn't notice it was gynoecious and only planted four plants as a test. Got lucky and got a male plant in the mix. It performed well. I'm doing mine as transplants, but I'll also direct seed in another month when it's ready here in 7B NC. We have three nights coming up that will be in the 30's that is worrying me. Not freezing, but they keep dropping the forecasted temps lower with each passing day. My dog started howling while I was watching your video. Seems like it was about 7:30 mins in. ;-)
Travis, do I need a pollinator for Max Pac? Thanks for all the info. I planted bush beans a week ago and they are up already. So are the zinnias at the end of the row. We’ve got that nasty storm comin in on the 17 th ( Panama City)and I sure hope I don’t lose all those tender plants! I have all my starts ready to put out the day after. Got all my seeds from you and had good germination.
We will be planting hossinator cucumber, winter squash, slick stik, and of course zucchini..what is a good corn for beginners, our 1st year growing it,only a few
I am starting every single thing indoors this year except green beans. I have about 350 sweet corn started indoors too. Transplanting sweet corn let’s you plant them deep, real deep and you can hill them. They don’t blow over then.
Great video! I’m a fan of the old school “bumpy” crook neck yellow squash. I live frying up some fresh caught catfish, and having a side of boiled and buttered squash with it. Lawd! Alright alright alright!
I sell bedding plants in the spring, and have been reluctant to sell the gynoecious cucumbers, as I couldn't guarantee a pollinator was included...duh! Thanks for the tip about just adding an open-pollinated cuc with every sale.
Our greenhouse is usually full this time of year, and we have pretty good success direct-seeding them. Many folks (including all the commercial growers around here) do in fact transplant them as you suggested.
May have try ir tarp method can't seem get anything planted onion no potato nothing bc keeps raining did get dragged and cultivated but no till make loose yet grr
I like it when I just got done planting and get on here and ur planting the same thing. Question I’m in a new spot this year and have a lot of roots. Any tips trips tools or advice to dealing with the roots
Same here. I'm in Georgia. Dug a new plot this weekend. Lots of roots. I have a live oak to the back of my property. Didn't think there'd be so many roots.
One of my spots used to have a good bit of roots. You can take an axe and try to get rid of some of them. But I had to let some just naturally break down. Gets better every year, but I still hit one every now and then.
Amy Fewell of Homesteaders of America just gave you all a great endorsement in a recent video of hers. She said something about getting a really good germination from Hoss seeds. This is her trials of several seed companies. She doesn't disparage any seed company but does do a shout out to Hoss.
Have y’all ever tried a trap squash of blue Hubbard? I’m trying it this year after reading some research from universities out of Alabama and Michigan.
Just watched your Hoss Tools tour on Adler Farm channel. Loved behind the scenes. 😊 can you tell me why my summer squash and zucchini tend to lean / fall over a bit? The plants are healthy, but every year this happens. What am I doing wrong that they don't stay upright? May be this is normal? 🤷♀️
For sure I'll check it out at local garden center kinda new to gardening but the videos u put out I appreciate cause they help thanks for the reply its pretty cool u being famous n all!!! Thanks again for reply!!!
Cucumber help!! I think I might be confused. For the small garden, what do I do when I don't have room for that many cucumbers to make sure I've got some males?!?! I'm planting Stonewall and Diomede as well as MaxPick for pickling.
Just plant a few seeds of a standard slicing variety like Marketmore. Max Pack is not gynoecious, so it won't need the pollenator variety like the other two.
Just wondering do you plant by the almanac or plant when you get good weather? I've always try to plant by the almanac. Look like you have a good crop. Yep I like the straight neck squash happy gardening.
Maybe I need to start taking a chance. I don't know if the almanac is accurate or not I always heard plant by the signs. When I do go by the signs sometimes the garden still does poorly. It appears that you have great success with your garden.
I have issues with powdery mildew on my squash, zucchini and cucumbers every season. I plant some in the raised beds and some in pots. You mention succession planting and my question to you is; mildew is air and soil borne so once it’s in around my property will it not attack the next crop of them? Do you spray the areas with anything organic to try and get rid of the lingering spores? I’m so tired of losing my crops to mildew and throwing out and wasting so much soil from my potted plants Thankyou
We have several mildew-resistant varieties on our site that can tolerate it better than others. At some point later in the life of the squash plant, they'll all get it. That's why we pull the plants when they get it bad and plant more. They can fight it off pretty well when they're young and growing. You can also spray Liquid Copper (hosstools.com/product/liquid-copper-fungicide/) which helps.
Used to wear Muck Boots, but their quality got bad and I couldn't get more than 8 months from a pair. Started wearing these (dryshodusa.com/product/sod-buster-mens-ankle-boot/) and I can 2 years from them.
I'm in zone 9b, central California, and planning to grow Beit Alpha cucumbers. We have drought conditions and get over 100 degrees in the summer. What kind of timing do you recommend for succession sowing?
We're usually done with all cucumbers and squash by the end of July when we start getting close to 100 degrees. But we can usually get three crops before then, planting a new row every month or so.
Thanks as always for another great video. Question... is your drip system being run off city water or well water! Or does it matter? Here in Florida I have a shallow well (50’ or thereabouts) for irrigation purposes which off puts that distinct sulphur smell and has enough iron in it to turn a white fence orange/rust over the course of a year or so. I wonder what effect that may have on a vegetable garden, if any. Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.
Well water here. I'm not sure how the sulphur and iron would affect the garden long-term. If you have a way to filter the water at the source, that might not be a bad idea.
@@gardeningwithhoss Filtering the well water at the source, that’s an excellent question. I don’t know. I know that I could drill the well another 50 or so feet for clearer (less sulphur and iron) but that’s a bit overkill for a lawn irrigation system. I will look at a filter system between the spiciest and automated drip system though. Hummm.... might your products contain that very thing? Just a thought! Thanks for the suggestion.

They'll go away now that we're spending more time in the garden. They don't like disturbance. Once we start cutting the grass again, they'll move to the woods.

Thanks for watching George!

Hi! NC girl here. So glad to find a SE gardener who is knowledgeable and fun!
I like the patty pans. I boil them up and add a pint or two of home canned creamed corn. To die for.
I’m growing them this year

Gentry is a good one!
Looking really good, Travis! I'm growing Moonbean, Sunburst, Gold Prize and Golden Delight squash this year.

I got bristol cucumber from y'all so now I can compare to yours. Going to try the sunburst squash after I watch your video on grilling them.

I think growing a row of them vertically on a trellis is the most economical use of garden space, but do what works for you.

On occasion, but squash bugs are a much bigger problem usually.
