    Open choppy water removes all the bucolic peace from these narrowboat videos.
    Part of the charm for me is the closeness of people and communities as these boats ease through the canals.
    If I ventured out in that I’d want some width and A LOT more horsepower.

    I wonder how many narrowboats have done that trip down the Thames.
    Or better still how many have made it around the Maplin sands and up the Crouch or Blackwater, both those river have a small narrowboat population.

    Surfin! .. you can almost hear the people on the sailing boat.... " is that a.... narrow boat passing us?"

      definately a WTF!!! moment for them. :-)
      I spend a lot of time in deep keel boats offshore but would be getting twitchy in a narrowboat in anything more than a 2ft beam swell. I expect Victoria sits a lot deeper in the water than most narrowboats, but I'd chicken out and strap some outriggers across her as extra insurance... even if she might look like something from "Hawaii 50" :-)

      @@malcolmelliott1876 just think of a narrow boat like a miniature super tanker...

    • @malcolmelliott1876
      @malcolmelliott1876 5 лет назад +1

      An EMPTY supertanker!!.. 70 ft >> 1000ft. = 3ft >> 50 ft swell... Not so bad if the tanker is laden and 30% below waterline but wouldnt fancy being in an empty tanker in a 50ft swell. Had enough excitement in my life without tempting fate one more time :-) .. saying that though I bet you i will be doing the same trip within the next 5 years.. plus Wash, Humber and Severn... would be interested to know which of those was hardest for Victoria during her travels.

    Interested to know which of the Thames, Mersey and Humber was the hardest, and have you done the Severn from Sharpness to Bristol yet?

      Hi, they all have their own difficulties. I'd say the Humber has the greatest navigational difficultly as the channel snakes from one side of the river to the other. The Thames/Medway passage was awkward as there is no where to conviently tie up to wait for the tide, so timing was important. The Mersey was quite simple, but access arrangements (to MSC for example) are a pain. Obviously all of them provide some big traffic that you need to keep clear of, and weather issues are a big factor. Knowing the waters and how the react at in different weather, and different tidal flows helps considerably.
      I've not managed the Sharpness/Bristol trip yet. I wouldn't mind doing it, but it's a bit out of the way for my usual cruising areas.

      @@mykaskin Thanks - I imagine the Mersey will be the first I tackle next year then. I'll leave Thames and Hull for few years time. Did you haul out the boat since or just let the fresh water scrub off the salt?

    Has anyone tried braving the trip to the Isle of man in a narrow boat? The looks alone would be funny. WoW. That guy is really lost. Have you seen a canal around here? This lake is much bigger than I thought.......

      There have been specially designed narrowboats which have done some serious coastal trips to Channel Islands, and around Wales up to Scotland. Search for Ocean Princess or Chris Coburn on NB Progress.
