Thank you! I get emails all of the time from people saying "you copied this!" or "they copied you!"... no... unless someone lifts the pattern contents straight up, it's not a "copy" and it infuriates me. I have a pattern in the works right now that looks just like one that was released last week. Clearly she was a couple weeks ahead of me on testers, but sheesh!
omgosh! This was an awesome video! I was putting pattern pieces together from a bag maker and I was thinking how much work goes into creating a bag design. I was thinking about how could I do this? Then, luckily I saw your video series on this subject. Thanks for passing on all of your knowledge to us viewers! I just love your personality and how much fun you have making these videos!
OH GOSH! THIS HAS HELPED ME IMMENSELY! BUT I DEFINITELTY NEED TO CHECK AND SEE IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER BAGS OUT THERE THAT HAS THE SAME DESIGN I CREATED.
This is the most helpful video. I would love a part 2! I found you and have been binge watching all of your videos. I absolutely love all of your help!
I seriously need to do the second part. I always try to time it around when I'm designing a new pattern, but then I end up getting carried away and forget to document the process!
When making more complicated bags (backpacks especially) it is great help to create a paper/cardboard version so you can work out how to assemble the pieces and find mistakes and issues early in the process.
I discovered your channel yesterday and I binge-watched many videos, love your channel and your sense of humor. could you please make videos constructing bags using different types of stabilizers, especially the stiff ones
Hello! I just watched this video and love it! I watched several others of yours before this one, and then was excited to see this - but sad there isn't a part 2 yet. Is that something that you will put out soon? Would love to see how you do that as there is a bag I have had in my head for years and would love to try and make it a reality ;-) Thank you!
I have been meaning to for quite some time now, but every single time I sit down to do it, something has come up to derail me (new job, cross country move, marathon training). This particular series is a long time coming.
What a great gaming chair. Hubby would be jealous. Hubbie sews and would find your second tower a bonus? Thanks for sharing how to make a bag pattern. I've had something in mind for a while and had NO idea how to translate that into a workable pattern. While I'm an artist and can easily fold boxes in my head, the measurements for consistent reproduction isn't something I'm familiar with. I can easily do a "one and done" but what if I want two? Making a pattern AFTER I've sewn one that works is a little tricky since I really don't take notes on how I made the first one.
So happy I found your videos! It’s like a masterclass on the inside of bag making. Love it!! Do you ever use leather? If not, do you recommend anyone to watch to learn?
Funny thing is, I'm scared to use leather! I mess up more than you can see in the videos :P I don't know anyone off-hand who does leather bags and posts tutorials, only those who tool leather and post progress photos on Instagram :( badmoodleather and tempestcreations.
That's a great follow-on question! I tend to base this on size. A smaller bag won't do well with a super heavy canvas, for example. The way that you wear it and how well formed you want the shape will be will also dictate your interfacings. I will cover this in more detail in the next video, because that's about making the first pattern pieces and starting the testing process.
If you're intent to design a bag at the very beginning is to copy someone else's design down to the pattern pieces to make your own pattern to sell, it's a huge moral issue. Ethics aside, it's just a crappy and unprofessional thing to do. If you're taking someone's design to try to make a bag from it and the bag isn't hugely unique, I say go for it. I mean, I've been basically working on a Loungefly mini backpack pattern with a friend for a while now. We just won't be marketing it as a Loungefly knockoff or using their name anywhere. Nor did we disassemble any of their backpacks to try to figure out the pieces. THAT would have also been crappy.
Hi thank you for the videos they have been very helpful!! I was wondering what app or program do you use on your iPad for drawing up your sketches? I have been trying to find something like that, thanks
I have been playing around with the ruler tool in photoshop trying to figure it out, Please, can you explain to me how use measurements in photoshop, for example on a pattern piece if you want to put a small circle 3/8" of a inch away from the bottom edge of a image, how do I do that? Thanks in advance for your help
As long as it's a PDF pattern, just print it out by percentage. Instead of 100%, do 75% or 90%. Edit to add: make sure you adjust expectations for seam allowances, final sizes, and zipper sizing too when doing this!
Would you say it is unethical to try and recreate another designers bag if it is strictly for personal use and without the intention to sell the recreated design or publicize it?
OUF... I'm going to get DRAGGED for answering this either way - I wouldn't have a problem with it if someone did that with one of my patterns as long as they didn't turn around and sell the knock-off.
I get what you're saying about a cross-body bag, but us fluffy folks also wear them. Folks who are fluffy think about how it's going to fall on the hip. An adjustable strap is a good fix, as is the size. It just needs to make sense. So might want to add that caveat.
I have an ethical question: A maker whose work I greatly admire sells patterns for bags. His stuff is entirely made out of leather, and I'd really like to develop some cloth versions that are the same or heavily inspired by them. Is it okay for me to buy his patterns and then sell the bags I make from them? Or is it only appropriate for me to use his patterns for personal use and gifts?
Most of the patterns I have purchased will state if you can sell products made from them or not. If you aren't sure, reach out to the pattern maker to ask for clarification.
I'd say generally, no, from an ethical perspective. HOWEVER, there's only so many styles of tote bags you can make. As long as you do the patterning, designing, and instructions on your own without straight up copying, you are better than most people out there. I've seen a lot of outright pirated stuff.
I really do love making patterns and designing .....I started making bags at school and l must say l was just curious what really happens in the industry of bags and l had to do researchs and I'm glad I did .....once again thank you for the videos they really inspire me
Very few "original" handbag patterns out there. The majority are just making patterns from bags already on the market.A tote is a tote is a tote, but every designer has a pattern for one.
@@fiercekittenz And there is no copyright on designs. If you created the pattern without referencing another pattern, there should be no problem or offense to the other designer.
Good day I am looking to make a custom bag I have watched your videos and love your content and wanted some extra tips and mentor ship do u have a email
I don't provide mentorships unfortunately. I just don't have the extra time with a full-time job, streaming, and raising a family. RUclips is where I like to put my instructional videos.
I’ve been designing for 27 years.. there is nothing wrong with looking like another’s. Done every day all the time. It’s called the fashion food chain

Hello is there ever going to be a part 2 ? Just wondering sorry if this is bad to ask
How would you work though what materials you use on a bag based on use case/designed use case?
That's a great follow-on question! I tend to base this on size. A smaller bag won't do well with a super heavy canvas, for example. Fantastic video, Can’t hardly wait for your next ones. You always give so many great informations really feel we all learn something important 👍🌺
I absolutely love love love that hip bag🥰
What problems arise from coping someone bag design and selling it. Can I modify it for sale? Dig your show...

What if you can't draw. I have this bag I designed but everything went from head to fabric
When is part two coming out
Hopefully soon! I'm working on another (free!) pattern, and I want to use it as an example.
Good morning, how are you?
Regarding the vynil. Would that be okay to use " contact cement " for the interfacing.
Thanks for your advices
No I don't think I'd use contact cement. It can be corrosive.

How do you resize a purse pattern to be a smaller size
As long as it's a PDF pattern, just print it out by percentage. Instead of 100%, do 75% or 90%. Edit to add: make sure you adjust expectations for seam allowances, final sizes, and zipper sizing too when doing this!
