The thing that makes Bisbee look so weird is there was almost no flat ground to build on around the turn of the 20th century. What little flat ground there was was taken up by railroad yards and mining facilities, so residential and retail properties had to build up into the hills, and most retail ended up in multistory building to make up for the lack of buildable lots. Now that the railroad is gone and mining is just about gone there's plenty of flatland available, but there isn't much demand for it after the collapse of Arizona real estate a couple years ago. The condition of the basketball courts is probably due to the town having so relatively few kids. Bisbee is a visibly aging town, with the average age of a resident being 43. Many of the residents came back to Bisbee to retire. Combine that the largest per capita gay population in the state and you can see there aren't many reasons to rehab a basketball court.
I lived there for a good chunk of my childhood and can tell you there’s plenty of children it’s just not everyone is documented. And it’s a very poor town which is why there’s many rundown areas
A lot of tiny towns in AZ and NM look like this. Take a trip off the beaten path between Santa Fe and Taos someday its beautiful and interesting as hell

I lived in Bisbee three times, '00 to '01, '03 to '06, and '14 to '16. St. Elmo's is actually the oldest continually operating drinking establishment in the state of Arizona. They converted to a "soda shop" during prohibition, and did take-out "soda" during the heart of the pandemic. You must have been there before they opened that evening, everyone I've asked said they're still very much open

Spending half my childhood in Bisbee and returning there to visit many times as an adult I can say you really captured the weirdness vibe of the town. Lol If you walk portions of the 1000 Stair Climb you’ll see tons of cool unique art and architecture amongst the houses. The stairs themselves are artwork. Loved the video! Thanks.
I spent a summer here, in 1986. I lived in the older part of town behind the courthouse, on a narrow one-way street just like the one you drove down. What some call "quirky charm" others call a "run down dump". I worked in a co-op grocery store on the main street. Charles Manson once said that if he was ever released he'd move to Bisbee because it's the most like the 60s that he knew about.
I love this content. Showing how places near us have notable differences in the architecture and culture is interesting. If you have other places to cover, i would love to watch it.
I remember going on the mine tour on December 31st, 1992 when I was a kid with my grandfather! You had to wear their mining uniform and hard hat with a light on it. That was an amazing experience as a kid!
Oh wow it's been 14 years since I've been to Bisbee but I remember it looking so much more beautiful and polished, def don't remember it looking so worn down and beat up and old kind of junky stuff everywhere. It was much more a nice art town like Sedona, crazy.
Actually, being a resident of Bisbee I can tell you it is kept looking this way because we like our old stuff. But don't be fooled it's way cooler than most places. I'm raising 2 children with my beautiful wife, a local artist. We love it here.
It was never like Sedona, lmao- even 30 years ago. An argument can be made that Old Bisbee, on a whole, looks better than it used to due to many property renovations over the years. That last part just shows an old building that's been there forever. Rents and real estate is no longer that cheap, either.
BIsbee, the cheap version of Sedona. Psychic vortex and magnet to the impressionable mind. Now that pot is legal in AZ, this would be a good place to go on a trip that will blow your mind. Since you are doing this type of video, I can only suggest: Jerome, Cornville and Clarkdale. While I have been all over AZ in the 43 years I have lived here, those came to mind rather quickly so there must be a reason. This state has treasures beyond the imagination for those who want the unusual. Thanks for exploring Bisbee for us and I, for one, vote for more like this (as well as the malls as both are good).
This is such a great little town, I highly recommend the ghost tours if you ever go back. They also have e-bike rentals that are a blast to explore with, oh and "The Table", so yummy

What you described as old go-karts look like Soap Box Derby Race cars from the '60s. Bisbee would be a great place for them because when racing, they only go downhill.
Most of my family is from Bisbee. Most of them buried there too. Besides the Copper Queen, there is quite a lot of unique sights. Locals will know the 3 families from "tin town". If you go back, don't miss out on the fresh coffee in the Bisbee Subway.
Good timing. I'm heading to Bisbee for the weekend in a couple of weeks. One of my favorite AZ cities. Years ago there was an annual go kart race down Tombstone canyon every 4th of July. Actually more of a soap box derby. Used to go to it in the late 70s and early 80s. Warren and Lowell are also cool parts of town too. Im old enough to remember when the mines were still open here. I hope to do a lot of photos while there. Fun video - yes do more! Lots of interesting places in our state.
You should do Superior next. It's a mess. There's a book that shows how it was in the early 1900's and it was actually pretty cool. Much like many of Arizona's copper boom towns.
I remember taking the copper mine tour and eating breakfast at a restaurant in town which was very popular on December 31st 1992 with my grandfather. I don’t remember the name of the restaurant but vividly remember the great food and an amazing tour inside the copper mine as a kid! Loved it! Please do more videos on Arizona towns like maybe Yuma, Nogales, Sedona or Page! Loved the video!
That run-down Basketball Court would be a good place to build a skate-park. Patch up the concrete a bit, and get some volunteers to build some wood ramps and boxes. And you all set, a skate-park for the community.
Bisbee is a mineral collectors dream city!!! The copper minerals that they produced from the mines there are legendary (I'm a gem/mineral collector, who as quite a bit of Bisbee minerals in my collection lol)!
I don’t know if this is the case or not, but that fountain may not be in use due to water restrictions. Arizona is mostly desert, so it’s a possibility. Or it may just be neglected as said in the video.

Nice vid. I live in Tombstone, but I've only explored Bisbee one time for about 2 hours. Going back for a big explore when my grandson gets here in March, 2021. Hopefully, Covid is under control by then so that we can enjoy the trip better.
Definitely encourage you to do more small "City Archaeology", as I wanted to always see Bisbee. That may encourage me to go take a drive outdoors more often during this pandemic.
Oh, wow, I love Bisbee, and it is so, SO weird. The Art Deco courthouse is one of Arizona's most beautiful buildings. My brother and his boyfriend and I tried to convince the wonderful ladies who run a great bakery to change the name to Lesbian Cupcake Factory**, so that gives you an idea of how eclectic it is. It's almost like Tucson with everything normal and boring removed. One thing I'll say is that you have to have an extremely high tolerance for Southwest kitsch, because you will come face to face with Kokopelli and sugar skulls every two feet. **Which I still think would be just about the greatest business name ever.
Bisbee is a VERY bohemian kind of town. The go carts are remnants are from past coaster races down Tombstone Canyon Road. At the right angle, the Iron Man statue looks like he is holding his private part!! 😱. Lots of great night life and places to eat. THE best pizza 🍕 is at Screaming Banshee Pizza by the Iron Man statue. Be sure to check out the court house. It is in the Art Deco style. The bronze entry doors 🚪 are a work of art! In October, , Bisbee hosts the Bisbee 1000 Stair Climb. Also, some amazing bed and breakfasts to choose from. We have stayed at the Inn at Castle Rock. I believe our room was haunted, as I felt someone “sit on the edge of my bed!”
I went to Bisbee in March & happened to be there during the motorcycle event. I FELL in Love with that town. It’s calling me to go back and I can’t explain what it is. Like a spirit or something lol I really can’t wait. Not to mention when we were in one of the book shops my grandma got her hair pulled by something in the store. She thought it was me but I was on the other side. Creepy but cool. 😅
I visited Bisbee in 2006. The mayor (or former mayor or some member of city government) had a business giving jeep tours of the town. I got an earful on the history of Bisbee while riding around with him. He admitted he was an "old hippie" and he stopped to talk to a friend who was rehabbing an older home on a hillside. He was an "old hippie", too. They both came to Bisbee in the late 1960s to get away from society and family expectations. They stayed and became part of the establishment of Bisbee, which I thought was ironic. It looks more rundown than I remember.

I live in Tucson, AZ and so I’ve been to Bisbee countless times. If you didn’t get a chance to see it, next time you go you HAVE to visit the Miners and Merchants Antique Center. The best antique store I’ve ever been to!
I grew up in Bisbee in the 60s and 70s at that time almost everyone worked for Phelps-Dodge. Other than the buildings the town is nothing like it was. As far as some of the things in the video, the park and basketball court I went to Central school 3rd and 4rd grade and we would use that for our play ground. As far as the carts or coasters go on the 4th of july we would have coaster races it started up the canyon it was about 1 and 3/4 mile it ended by the post office and big P D store. Every boy in town couldnt wait until they was 9 or 10 so they could drive in the race. when u signed up you got the wheels and all the rules for building and racing. Bisbee was a good place to grow up, i have been back a few times i miss the feel and way of life of the past
One thing I like about this channel is how every video, no matter how run down or abandoned a place is, you can market it to make it look appealing. I think this place is sad and hearing those people in the background seems like folks down on their luck and into drugs and such.
@@gustavo733 It was open pit, and part of the reason it closed was that it was at the bottom of a canyon, and they had already gone to steeper terraces than are usual for that kind of mining. If they'd continued they basically would have collapsed the entire town into the pit.
Despite a recent & tragic fire, Bisbee is booming right now. Sales tax collection records imply tourism is up 30%. You should spend a few days (and nights) here during tourist season. There may only be 5-6k living here, but it can feel like you're in a crowded urban center during peak season with too much to do and see. As another RUclipsr said, sensory overload.

I have the same memory from around the same time. I still have photos somewhere and definitely remember amazing breakfast food.

Oh, while you’re there, go east down Hwy,. 80 to the traffic circle ⭕️ and drive through Lowell. It is a part of Bisbee, frozen in time!!

I live in Tucson, AZ and so I’ve been to Bisbee countless times. If you didn’t get a chance to see it, next time you go you HAVE to visit the Miners and Merchants Antique Center. The best antique store I’ve ever been to!
I grew up in Bisbee in the 60s and 70s at that time almost everyone worked for Phelps-Dodge. Other than the buildings the town is nothing like it was. As far as some of the things in the video, the park and basketball court I went to Central school 3rd and 4rd grade and we would use that for our play ground. As far as the carts or coasters go on the 4th of july we would have coaster races it started up the canyon it was about 1 and 3/4 mile it ended by the post office and big P D store. Every boy in town couldnt wait until they was 9 or 10 so they could drive in the race. when u signed up you got the wheels and all the rules for building and racing. Bisbee was a good place to grow up, i have been back a few times i miss the feel and way of life of the past
l live in Bisbee and I really enjoyed this video! Bisbee is very historic with new discoveries around every corner.

Interesting town. I went to look at it on Google maps and it looks interesting there. Three mini towns that converge on a traffic circle.
One thing I like about this channel is how every video, no matter how run down or abandoned a place is, you can market it to make it look appealing. I think this place is sad and hearing those people in the background seems like folks down on their luck and into drugs and such.

yup. you can stop and have a look at it. It's literally next to the highway.
@@gustavo733 It was open pit, and part of the reason it closed was that it was at the bottom of a canyon, and they had already gone to steeper terraces than are usual for that kind of mining. If they'd continued they basically would have collapsed the entire town into the pit.
Despite a recent & tragic fire, Bisbee is booming right now. Sales tax collection records imply tourism is up 30%. You should spend a few days (and nights) here during tourist season. There may only be 5-6k living here, but it can feel like you're in a crowded urban center during peak season with too much to do and see. As another RUclipsr said, sensory overload.
the mythical town of Bisbee a place that arzionaians known of but none have really been there. It's a interesting looking place and defentally doesn't belong in az.
