  • The Crusades: an Arab Perspective - Liberation: Acre and the End of the Crusades (Episode 4)
'The Crusades: An Arab Perspective' is a four-part documentary series telling the dramatic story of the crusades seen through Arab eyes, from the seizing of Jerusalem under Pope Urban II in 1099, to its recapture by Salah Ed-Din (also known as Saladin), Richard the Lionheart's efforts to regain the city, and the end of the holy wars in 1291. Part one looked at the First Crusade and the conquest of Jerusalem. In part two, we explored the birth of the Muslim revival in the face of the crusades. Part three examined the Battle of Hattin, Saladin's siege of Jerusalem and the Third Crusade. And the final episode tells the story of the Muslim liberation of the Holy Land and the end of the crusades.
In 1193, Salah Ed-Din Al-Ayoubi, known in the west as Saladin, fell ill and died, leaving the Ayyubid dynasty in disarray. Six years earlier, he had defeated the Christian forces in the Battle of Hattin and opened the way to the liberation of Jerusalem.
"The successors of Salah Ed-Din ruled over Egypt, the Levant and Iraq. But they failed miserably, unlike the founder of their family. Salah Ed-Din had gained his legitimacy, and that of his state, by embracing the project of defending the Islamic nation and its sanctities against crusaders. His successors relied on a policy of reaction. They never took positive action, relying instead on peace initiatives," explains Qassem Abdu Qassem, head of history at Zaqaziq University.
The First Crusade, a century earlier, had succeeded in establishing four Christian enclaves in the Levant and, above all, in the capture of Jerusalem. The Second and Third Crusades, each led by powerful and famous European monarchs, had ended in abject failure.
By the end of the 12th century, after 100 years of Muslim fightback, the territory under crusader control was reduced to a tiny coastal strip in the Levant. The crusaders were forced to adapt and revise their targets.
"Pope Innocent III called for a crusade to atone for the failure of the Third Crusade, but the campaign could not secure a means of transport," says Abdu Qassem.
"The main army hired the Venetians in 1202 to ship them to the east. They couldn't afford to pay the Venetians the fee that they had agreed," adds Christopher Tyerman, professor of the history of the crusades, of Hertford College, Oxford.
So instead of heading towards Palestine and Egypt, the crusaders landed in Constantinople in 1204 - and sacked it.
"This is a remarkable thing for a crusade to have done. To have sacked the greatest Christian city in the world. It provoked outrage across many parts of the west, of course in the Greek world, too. And interestingly, one contemporary Greek writer says 'Look, when Saladin recovered Jerusalem what did he do? He spared the Christians and what have you done? You Christians, you have taken a Christian city and you have killed Christians. You should follow the example of Saladin. He was superior to you in the way that he behaved here," explains Jonathan Phillips, professor of history, University of London.
"Innocent III was a pope obsessed with crusading. He inherited the failure of the Third Crusade to recover Jerusalem and the Fourth Crusade which he launched that captured Constantinople, the great Christian city. He tried to inspire yet another expedition that we know as the Fifth Crusade, and this was designed to go through Egypt and use the fertility of the Nile and the wealth of Cairo to have the resources to then recover Jerusalem," says Phillips.
In 1218, the crusaders finally found their way to the Nile Delta. The armies of the Fifth Crusade landed in Egypt and captured the port of Damietta. For three years, the crusaders made no move to advance southwards towards Cairo. But when they finally did, their move would prove disastrous.
"This went down in history as a failed crusade due to the flooding of the Nile and the fact that the crusaders had no clue what happens to Egypt during the flood season, how hard it would be for the horses to move on such wet land. All these reasons caused the crusade to fail and achieve absolutely nothing," says Afaf Sabra, professor of history, Al-Azhar University.
Meanwhile, the three Ayyubid brothers were engaged in deep infighting. And one of them, Al-Kamel, the ruler of Egypt, took an infamous decision. He decided to seek an alliance with the Holy Roman emperor, Fredrick II. Fredrick helped Al-Kamel and, in return, was given the keys to Jerusalem in 1229. This came to be known as the Sixth Crusade.

It makes me re-examine the history I've been taught and has been a wonderful journey through this smart and well presented documentary. Thank you so much. I'm very happy I subscribed.

best documentary I've ever seen in my life. I was a big big fan of BBC for their unequivocal documentaries but you just surpassed it. Just one thing to here for all human " religion never dictates war, it's men who want to rule the world amd use religion as a shield to gather support and empathy. Those men are not doing good neither for mankind nor for their religion". Though religion told their disciples to defend their home but attacking others just for land , money , business , etc is evil .

First of all I think that AlJazeera are becoming more known within Societys, Communities, Universities, and other industries for it's resources of information about the Middle East. Therefore; this source of production is vital on a globle scale of informing the world about the histories and contemporary information on the gulf wars etc.
Secondly I enjoyed this documentary very much because it provides an insight into the beginning of man kind wars in the Middle East. I totally agree with the comments from an Arab elderly towards the end of part 3 Liberation "imperial of colonisation".
From an Indigenous prespective: It was the Maori people who were the very first to discover and settle in Aotearoa (New Zealand) . The Maori people had their own Maori world view of religions, gods, beliefs, values, traditions, Maori medicine and culture systems instored. After the British, Dutch and French early settlers and traders arrived Maori life systems came to an end. The British with the help of French and Dutch wiped out a colony of a Maori race killing kings and queens, confiscating the land and resources, spreading white diseases, giving alcohol to them and raping the Maori women, capturing Maori and trading them for slavery. This was the beginning of colonisation, and the arrival of missionaries converting them into Christenaity, and Catholic.
Back to the "doc" in part 1 there was at least 3/4 different religions, Muslims been the domineering. It is remarkable how the culture of different prespectives of religions lived side by side, until the invasion of Western countries which changed the face of the Middle East and the world in the fault of history. In todays society there are many reigions for example the famous king of reggae Bob Marley also a true Rastafarian like many other Rastas believes that their god is a living man "Heile Selassie I 1st"
I was digusted about many things how the Western countries turned religion into a war zone to gain authority, power, and greed all for territorial purposes. I was born and batizied a Catholic and it was like a shell shock knowning that the history of a Pope gave orders to kill in order to gain power. The Pope in todays world as I wonder if any of the cardinals and close links to the Pope have researched about the history of the Pope. If I had of known this information I would of not returned back to Catholic religion. I now understand more from an Indigenous prespective about the insights of the Arab kingdom that I feel more at ease, it's provided knowlege, I feel alot safer now than before walking amongst Arabs here in Australia, understanding a bit about the Arab and Islamsic lores. However; I fear more from an Australian white population as they are driven deeper into pyschotic drug taking of "Ice". I like to thank the production of Al Jazeera for sharing the documentaries god bless. Many blessings to the Middle East that 1 day there will come peace and harmony first of all from the small groups of people, into the small cities, than work your way into the larger cities. Peace will come 1 by 1 to the countries, be patience.

I love seeing history from different viewpoints like this and how major events had an impact on our world in so many different ways. I felt it a bit of a stretch the way the ending wrapped up by comparing modern expansion/influence to the original Crusades but certainly a view worth considering and not wrong. There's just too large a time gap vs. the original Crusades to directly associate internal and external influences in the same scope. But this was a very good production. Combined with other historical information, it's easy to see how this was part of setting the stage for European Expansion (almost directly because of knowledge gained from the Crusades) and ultimately for industrialization and the World Wars.

The holy land was conquered by the first islamic empire from the byzantine empire. It is quite funny that all these historians see the crusades as a conquest of muslim land, while the spread of islam by sword into the mediterranean area was not an aggression. However, the mongol invasion was the real set back for the medival arab world.

Mohammed Haitham It was Roman for a long time, and there was a huge influence of Greeks, they pretty much defined culture with gimnasia and libraries such Alexandria. Natives were allowed to remain Egypt pagans, because Rome was generally tolerant of other religions. Of course, that tolerance can become a weakness at some point.

    • @Omar-kw5ui

Tehanu Reaver it was native for much longer... And it still is... Plus the Romans were not religiously tolerant. Do you forget what they did to the Jews and early Christians? Or even to the pagan gods that they didn't follow. Lol, it's funny when uneducated idiots express their ignorance so willingly and openly.

The biggest mistake Muslims did at that time was they stopped the fight in Acre, it would be best if they continue attacks to the crusaders then crusaders couldn't devise plans against Muslim lands.
Salah Ed-Din and Baibars the liberators of Jerusalem were not Arabs this makes clear that we should not relay Arabs in Saudi and other Arabs.
We are coming back, crusaders prepare your departure, and know we are not stopping until we reach your homes in West. Inshallah.

For me it's only a matter of time before they fully revolt in the name of jihad and start a grand scale uprising.
