    Now that’s my kind of tent/camp. Well organized and equipped. I like the ample space of this tent because when you get all your gear in it, there’s still enough room to move around without tripping on stuff. Good video budd. Happy hunting. Watching from Ottawa 🇨🇦🤜🤛🇺🇸

    Appreciate the video. I bought an alaknak 13x20 for hunting season and sold it before the next season. Getting condensation with a wood burning stove was unacceptable. You have me sold on a Kodiak tent. Reading the comments and learning what you're about, made me a subscriber. From here in Idaho, God bless and thank you for your service.

    • @DIYoming

      Ok...wow! Thank you. I appreciate your kind words. Made me feel like the time when I had a conversation with a hunter. He was bow hunting the September season instead of waiting for the end of October rifle season like he normally did. Well by then I've usually got my camp out way before the rifle season. So we're talking and he asked me about my camp and if it was my first year to camp there. I said no that I spend weeks camped there every year. And he said that he passes through there every year and never knew that someone had been camping there. He said it in passing but I took it as the highest compliment because I take great pains not to mess the area up beyond the flattened vegetation where I had my tent.
      Anyway, back to tents. You think the condensation is bad using the wood stove? Try running a propane heater in an Alaknak tent! You'll be mopping your tent out all day long. There are videos on RUclips that are about over-wintering in an Alaknak or Alaknak style tent. They show how it is in the morning, getting up with frozen condensation on the inside of the tent .and spending most of the morning cleaning up the pools if water on the floor from the sun melted ice. To them it doesn't seem to bother them but that would drive me nuts. You'll not be sorry switching to the Kodiak. Thank you for subscribing and for the kind words. I hope you got your tent ordered and get it in a timely matter. God bless you sir and good luck this year.

      @@DIYoming that is a great compliment. Hunters are some of the best conservationists there is. I commend your efforts in "leaving no trace".
      Fortunately I knew if the alaknak would sweat with a wood stove, it would be a pool with my buddy heater. I did make a rookie mistake and research the tent after I already bought it. Guess I was just excited to have an affordable wall tent I could stand up in. Should mention I bought it used. The puddles weren't even that bad but I knew the problems that it could lead to. Draft was the other problem, super drafty.
      I haven't ordered mine yet, looking over options and doing my due diligence in researching what will work best. Good luck to you too and thank you for the response.

I got a smaller tent for my self to have my own space but it's polyester and sweats like crazy with a stove going. This is my next setup if I can put the money together. Used my first Kodiak canvas tent 10x10 flexbow this year in the mountains and I LOVE the tent. Super fast to setup using the lag bolt drill method. I use a convection 10,500 BTU kerosene indoor heater usually but this year I also bit the bullet on the Kodiak 0 degree Sleeping bag and WOW am I ever impressed with it. Combined with the canvas ability to hold in heat and the zero degree bag I was sweating without even using the heater even though temperatures went down to 5c or around 35-40F every night. Stayed the whole week without spending approximately 7 dollars in kerosene a night. What a savings, The sleeping bag is going to pay for itself. Best sleeping bag I've ever owned. @@DIYoming So this is a crazy awesome setup I really hope you see this and answer my questions. it's my 1st time seeing your video I literally just watched the 1st one but I'm currently preparing to go off grid survival living type situation. I believe what you're doing is a probably a yearly hunting camp, not sure how long you would be out there so maybe you could answer that, are you out there for a month or the whole season, how long is the season? another question is I saw in a different video, it looks like you pull a trailer out there with all your gear, So the question here is it looks like you have 20-30,000$ (this might be greatly over exaggerated, atleast I hope lol) invested in all that gear, surely it was over years of expanding your creature comforts but why did you opt not to Maybe invest in a pop up camper or maybe a used RV? I'm thinking maybe you have more space in this but just a question. Also Maybe a hint to what you have invested in all of your gear. One thing I've been thinking hard about is having power out where there is no power. I see that you have 2 solar solar panels, what kind of storage do you have for the power that they give and what are the specs on those solar panels? How can you run on them and what all are you using for your power storage? I know this is a very long message but I'm trying to ingest as much info and knowledge as I can, because within 2 or 3 weeks I am going to set out. Thank you So much. I wish you the very best of luck.
      PS. Again, I really hope to receive a response from you...... and any other tips or tricks will be appreciated. Also I just wanted to say that I'm not just some city folk who is trying to do something outlandish and endanger myself. I am a 38 year old creek Indian from Atmore Alabama. I served 5 years in U.S.A.F from from June 2008 to June 2013. I was stationed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson Arizona. I joined as spec-ops and gave my try at becoming a U.S.A.F Pararescue men. However a third through my 9 week endocrine training and evaluation,i fractured my ankle (I barely got in because of this ankle that I had fractured and surgery on due to high school football. I had to seek several medical evaluations to be cleared and have a waiver, but this was a red flag) so I was forced to reclass. Point of all this is I was introduced to SERE training and multiple other survival techniques. Ok, so I wrote all that description to perhaps sway you into taking the time to read this and responding... thank you sir.

      @DIYoming  2 года назад +1

      @@aaronmcghee7902 Oh my Brother, you don't have to beg me to respond. I willingly respond because you and people like you are exactly why I started making these videos. I'll let you in on a little secret, that "hunting" camp is a dress rehearsal for my bug out camp. Of course that is contingent on a best case scenario that I have a running vehicle to haul that gear. In the case that I don't have a running truck I have a fleet of 1200 lb. capacity wagons that myself and my crew can pull a pared down camp setup by hand.
      Thank you for your service, I personally am a 12 year Navy veteran.
      I see that you understand the assignment. People laugh at people like us, but I don't think there's as many laughing as there was 6 months ago. All they have to do is watch the news. Or better yet ask us veterans how fast shit can go sideways. We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two. Right?
      Yes I spend a minimum of a month in camp and this past year I spent 7 weeks in that camp. Where I camp at I can't get a camper into it. Not even a pop-up. I haul that camp in in the bed of my truck, it takes two trips from my cargo trailer which is parked 5 miles away. Honestly I probably have about $10,000 or less invested in that camp.
      Right now my only power storage is that Goal Zero 150 watt 'solar' generator. But this year I'm putting together my own self built power box. I'm using lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) 230 ah cells. There are a lot of videos out there on doing this. Just search DIY solar generators. You can buy pre built ones like Jackery, Bluetty, etc. but you can build better for cheaper by doing DIY. A good source for videos is Hobotech (for gear reviews) and DIY solar with Will Proust. My main power consumption concerns are charging my communication devices to in include handheld HAM radio receivers and directly powering a CB radio for a base communication device. I'm real happy with that rechargeable refrigerator and I'll be able to power that from that power box as well.
      If you have anymore questions just ask me and I'll try and answer them.

      @@DIYoming Thank you sir, well here is something major that I am having a problem with, location, how exactly did you find a spot where you could get your vehicle off grid. Some people are fortunate enough to have lots of land near water to be able to do this however I don't maybe you are one of those people but maybe you aren't and you could give me a heads up on choosing a location. I have seen videos where people had gone completely off grid I think maybe even one instant on their own property and they were continuously hassled by the state and I guess their county I guess because they wanted them to be on grid. And I think actually. though it's been some time ago that I watched this, that they eventually hassled them enough, and threatened them with charges, to where they took down there off grid shelter. My goal is to obviously find somewhere beautiful in the forests maybe mountainous area and near a lake or stream. I was just wondering how you chose your location. Also things that I should be weary of and perhaps I should think about because maybe some things are illegal like camping in national forests or you know things like that. Once again thank you so much sir.

    • @DIYoming
      @DIYoming  2 года назад

      @@aaronmcghee7902 I live in Wyoming. We have millions of acres of public land. But with that said it's actually illegal to "homestead" on public land and there's a time limit on how long you can camp in one spot. So to settle the area would be after the shit hits the fan and the 'law' has bigger things to worry about. I choose the area based on a lot of different factors. Distance from population centers, the farther the better. Trees for cover, building materials and fuel. Water sources, I look for the more non-apparent sources like secluded natural springs, and lastly food. There are a lot of cattle and sheep in my favorite areas that will probably become free range in the shtf scenario. Plus there's a lot of game animals in those areas as well.

    Just stumbled onto your site while checking out Kodiak tents and have been enjoying much of what you share. Appreciate your willingness to be vulnerable with your opinions, as it is not a right or wrong but, this is what works for me! As I watch and see many different set ups from hot tenting to hunting tents that store and cook their food inside their tents on wood stoves or burners, while I have always been told while sleeping in a backpack tent that that is dangerous in bear, cougar or wolf areas, my question is have I believed a lie, because a canvas tent is only a few moments longer than nylon to get to the snacks inside.

    • @DIYoming
      @DIYoming  2 года назад

      Thank you. I appreciate that you get what I try to convey in my videos. You're right, when tent camping canvas doesn't give you anymore protection than any other tent. Your best defense is some sort of perimeter alarm, sleep lightly and keep bear spray and/or a large caliber hand gun. But it doesn't hurt to store your food outside the camp. The worst thing to do though is to store fresh meat in your tent. So when hunting hang the meat high and far away from the camp.

      @DIYoming  2 года назад +2

      Yes it holds a load better, but if you are upgrading just because of that then I recommend trying to tarp your 12x9 with a polytarp first. I really helps slide the snow off of the tent. The biggest problem with snow accumulation is the side eves on the 12x9 as I'm sure you've discovered. The tarp really does help keep the snow and water from pooling at the eves, as long as someone is there to manually push from the inside. If the tent is being left unattended then the tarp will help a little but it will still accumulate at the eves.

      When I make the videos I try and supply enough information about what I am talking about that the viewer, with a little diligence and effort, can find the products on their own. I don't get paid to drop links like a lot of creators do.
      With that said here you go:
      A Google search for the Zodi Outback shower system will alert you to the fact that the company no longer is in existence, at least the last I checked.
      The shower tent is from Amazon, it's sold under the name Ozark Trail and it was listed as a two room shower enclosure. Since it's a brand sold exclusively by Walmart then you may want to check walmart.com as well.
      If you are talking about the actual tent itself then go to competitiveedgeproducts.com and look up the 12x12 Kodiak Cavas Tent.
      I just repeated verbatim what I said in the video. Maybe seeing it in print will help you out.

    • @DIYoming
      @DIYoming  2 года назад

      No, unfortunately there is not. There is a zippered port on the 9'x12' cabin tent for doing just that, but not on this one. I guess they forgot to include that in these newer tent models.

    • @offroad6309
      @offroad6309 2 года назад +1

      Really too bad. The bottom of a old Coleman roof top carrier or something similar makes a great shower pan that you can run a drain hose away from the tent and shower in your main tent. Easy to set up a curtain if needed. A little pallet in the bottom keeps you out of the water if needed. Bonus, the carrier works great for keeping all your showing equipment together.

    Are bears a concern with all that food in the tent?

    • @DIYoming
      @DIYoming  2 года назад +1

      Bears are always a concern. There are a lot of bears in the area, in fact my bear bait is less than a mile from my tent down the closed road. And to further punctuate the bear presence, I once had a non-violent argument with a 400 pounder on the exact spot where my tent is pitched before I started camping there. Most bear activity is nocturnal and I am a light sleeper. With everything said I have never had an encounter with a bear in my camp or any evidence that my camp had been visited by a bear. I'm more concerned about the friggin' cattle wandering around and smashing through my camp.🤣

    I don't understand why so many people buy Kodiak, you'll see them all over Quartzite and crowded BLM LTVA's etc.. and every single person including myself all have the same problem, the zipper teeth break. If you get a season out of these overpriced tents then consider yourself lucky.

    • @DIYoming
      @DIYoming  3 месяца назад

      Really? I own 5 Kodiak Canvas tents and have experienced zipper failure on the most used models of my tents which would be my original 12×9 cabin tent and now my 12×12 lodge tent. Mostly the failures are due to EXCESSIVE use of those zippers to include literally thousands of zips and unzips over the MONTHS that I spend in these tents. One failure on my original 12x9 was the fact that my tent threshold had been stepped on and the seam at the bottom right corner had been torn which caused alignment issues and would cause teeth separation. I made a video about that as well.
      There are NO canvas tent manufacturers, that I know of, that warranty the zippers they use simply because those zippers ARE going to eventually fail. Many tent makers encourage the additional purchase of an extra flap to cover their zippers and can be closed by using attached tie straps for the very reason that sooner or later their zippers WILL fail.
      As far as overpriced, can see the validity of that statement if you are buying your camping gear at Walmart. Have you actually virtually built and priced a canvas tent from say Montana Canvas, White Duck or other makers? Try it sometime. Use the same dimensions as the Kodiak and add all of the windows and amenities that is included in the price by Kodiak and you'll find that Kodiak is one of the most affordable, value orientated canvas tents on the market. Plus most tent makers charge for shipping and you'll have to fork out another $300-$400 for EMT to cut your own frame poles.
      I am not a paid shill or in any way sponsored by Kodiak Canvas. I am completely honest in my assessments of all of the gear I own and have paid for every item I use in my videos.
      I'm sorry that your experience has been diametrically opposed to mine and left you bitter. Maybe you just got a bad zipper? I suppose it happens from time to time as with any manufactured goods.
      I don't have the advantage of knowing dozens or potentially hundreds of Kodiak Canvas tent owners as you seem to. I understand that you may be disappointed in your experience and maybe that fact is making you a bit hyperbolic? I have heard of only one other person express the such vitriol about the tent's zippers. But again I don't know as many Kodiak tent owners as you seem to.
      As far as the point of failure being busted teeth it's the first of me hearing about that or experiencing it myself. The point of failure that I know about is the teeth separating after it's been zipped. Seems to be just before the start of the curve at the top right corner. But busted teeth? I haven't experienced this.
      I sincerely hope you can find a tent better suited to your expectations and will once again enjoy your time in the great outdoors.
