The Master of a Secret Machete Martial Art

- Tire Machet, known as Haitian machete fencing, is a mysterious martial art that only a select few have mastered. Professor Avril lifts the shroud of secrecy in this short documentary, 'Papa Machete.'
“This martial art is generally practiced in secrecy, and that secrecy dates back to its origins," says director Jonathan David Kane. "There were even moments during filming where the Professor Avril was reticent with aspects of his own practice. What he shows us in 'Papa Machete' is a rare gift, one which my team and I are truly fortunate to have been allowed to document and share with the world.”

I know it's been years, but this is so beautiful. Especially the sound of the machete. Oh my...
If I am not mistaken, the pouring and drinking of the rum is a religious ritual in sacrifice to the gods and/or spirits, a la that seen in African indigenous religions and in the Christian Eucharist. As a pagan practitioner of the Katori Shinto-ryu sword school, I very much appreciate this detail, though drinking alcohol during anything but solo practice in our school would almost certainly be frowned upon. However, if we proceeded very slowly, with wooden swords, perhaps it could be a very instructive exercise with a good partner. After all, if you utilize altered states of consciousness, you may one day be in an emergency in an altered state of consciousness, and so perhaps it is wise to prepare by doing some training while in those states of consciousness.
Are you practicing under the main line of Otake Sensei or the Sugino branch? Your ryu is deeply connected with Shingon Buddhism and shinto. I'm a Tatsumi Ryu practitioner but our ryu doesn't seem to focus so much on the esoteric Buddhist aspect of shingon other than acknowledging our founder's divine revelation from Tsumayama Daimyojin.
Jesus Christ.... This is exhausting.
RIP Papa Machete 🙏🏿

The photography is gorgeous!
What people dont realize is they really fight like this out there (in street fights) its not play fighting either real beefs are settled with this and people get seriously injured or killed.
Real beefs ha
Not really. I watch alot of machete fights online because I use it for study in HEMA. Machete is just like messer. The average laymen doesnt know how to fence. Things get chaotic a lot of bluffs and feints if you would call it that. Getting into a machete fight is scary for anyone! But yes machete fights do happen especially in crime and underdeveloped areas of the world. Professor Avril's methods and teachings are NOT something I would bring in a real machete fight. Watching his moves it is clearly just dancing, although that is an art in its own right.
I can go into more detail if interested.
@@matthewspringer1369 do u think u could beat any of them in a machete fight tho???
@@9060800wtf Yes! 100%. I fenced for 3 years at my college (foil, epee, saber) and part of a historical fencing club in my city for about 7. Not only could I beat them but any competent average person could to do it too. Their moves are not beneficial in any way. Mechanically it is shameful.... they are not in position of knees bent balls of feet (like in any contact setting/sport) and literally throwing swings at their partners blades. There is no meaningful movements. It was laughable when he was blocking behind his back. Like why? Its cool dancing i'll give him that lol. You should get into fencing if you have ever thought about it. Its a lot more badass than this guy. :)
yes brotha they get hacked to death every time in the streets
This looks so elegant and refined, more French than the actual French. Fitting considering that during the Rebellion Haitians espoused Enlightenment ideals more thoroughly than the actual French.
the combat form is little bit based of french fencing
Cool piece of history. I wonder what kind of practices and drills they do besides the ones shown.
I do American karate but I’m swapping to African mma I love my people
Not African hun. Haitian
If Jason Voorhees even came here, may the worst luck save all of us, as with this martial arts along with his large size, he would be terrifying.

The triangular footwork reminds me of Filipino martial arts and a little bit of Capoeira.

02:13 look at that candle . dont mess with this guy
I still want to know though. The machete has next to no guard on its handle. How are people able to dual with a machete? Moreover how can a skilled combatant using a machete win a fight against a person with a more traditional sword that has a guard? The Japanese and the Chinese styles of martial arts do incorporate weapons like the katana and the Jian, swords that have guards that aren't really all that big or significant, especially compared to European and middle eastern weapons , and the Japanese are known for not using a shield with their sword combat. But I do not know how similar machete combat is or if the machete should even be used in a sword fight. But the Haitian Rebellion worked so that has to count for something. Tell me guys, what should a guy with a machete do in order to fight a person with a sword?
Smartly, and knowing what techniques you can use against your adversary.
Timing, footwork and practise basically. The sword has more advantages though

okay that's pretty hilarious, the dude is like an old kung fu master. But with a machete... and drunk af...
Your lack of knowledge may be inadvertently conveying disrespect.
Drunken master
This man is truly scary with his machete skills, in this video he shows you angles of attack instinctively and he's actually playing. In a real fight you'll be lucky to last 1 minute with his skill level.
No hes not. Hes NOT a fencing "master". Hes dancing which is an art in its own right but anyone with any little knowledge of fencing would know that what these tourists are paying to learn from him would not be practicable in a real fight with machetes. Dont be naive and fall for him just because of the title of the video and that hes from another country and thus "mysterious".
@@matthewspringer1369 you know, this form of machete fight worked against Napoleon troops. So, either you talk to much, either you know less than you think. It,s not a sword, slaves only had machetes, because their job was to cut the sugar cane.
@@andreartigas8308 True but not this guys fighting. He said he learned it from "spirits" lol.
Yes I know what I'm talking about here.
Because I practice it and competed in foil/epee/saber in college.
He doesn't adopt any form let alone stance in of combat engagement. Universal in not just certain cultures but everywhere because of physics. For example staying on the balls of your feet, not jepordizing yourself to simply be pushed over, and finding your center mass.
Also it doesnt matter what weapon you use as mechanically there is only a certain amount of moves you can physically swing with a sharp object.... Everything translates unless its exotic. Machete is not exotic is found across many cultures and is simply called "messer" or short sword.
But go ahead and believe what you want.... Theres no hope of convincing someone who believes in superstition "power warriors" that get their knowledge from spirits rather than study.
You probably believe in all those fake karate chi power moves too?
@@matthewspringer1369 first of all you have no idea what does it mean learning with spirits or why he said it. So clearly you have a real prejudice and regard your self as superior. You are not. Second it's called sparring, not real fight, and has a ritualistic side of it. Third they use and have been using their techniques for 2 centuries at least with success. So mister superior, don't give lessons.
@@andreartigas8308 Exactly what does it mean by learning with spirits?! Care to explain? lol
Have they been using this charlatans specific techniques for 2 senturies??! What evidence do you have?
For all you know this guy could have just woke up one day drunk and been like "Im going to teach machete fighting even though Ive never learned it and have no idea what im doing but just make it look cool and mysterious so I can get money from white tourists or whatever."
You have no evidence and cannot back up the fact that every bout he does is mechanically and physically a detriment in combat engagement. HE LITERALLY is turning his back and to his opponent to "block" attacks. Its sooo laughable!! xD
Please dude! Please take some classes and dont fall for this shit.
I honestly expected to see Danny Trejo
I'm hoping that this will be also uploaded on vimeo for a more professional audience
Excellent short documentary
People talking about fencing classes and shit when in the time this was created there was a High lack of education and it was fight to die, no time for refination outside of learning to use them to finish the opponent. This things may inspire themselves on france, but France sure as she did not teach the slaves during the Colony to fight, which is why when guns came into play the real independence was achieved. No fencing was gonna change that.
True a cinematographer only allows you to see angles that tell the story, but in real life you never hear the blade especially in close quarters. I live in the inner city of Baltimore MD, aka Bodymore Murderland. From experience, I survived edged weapons conflict in the street and in the club. Had it not been for my years roughly eight years, studying kali and escrima, I couldn't make the comments but from experience versus tournament competition, maybe, I am wrong but you come across as a tournament judge, an academic. Moreover having to face down a real fluid edge weapon encounter, obviously, I am not living in a fenced bubble. The point is I am coming from experience and not theory. Touche de mesure o Pourquoi des Armemens ? contre qui des mesures de precaution? But , if you wish to arm , I will arm also ; if you wish to fight , I will fight also .
No False. You will definitely hear the machetes hit in real life. 😒
Do you hear the noises in your mom's room?
You must be off your psycho medication because who in their right mind would make such a comment. It appears you're jealous of the skills of a black man.@@Yourmomma568
I wonder why some people say this machete style is like capoeira with machetes
The only Capoeira-like aspect I see is the triangular footwork to evade a create angles. Not to mention both styles were created by slaves but that's pretty much it.
Basically because remembers a dance
They are trying to "complete" each other more than hit in the trainings
Exists a capoeira style with weapons, it's called maracatu
A lot of leg voiding going on here

Thoseof you who are disrespecting this master are expressing your true ignorance. If you
never experienced live blade training then you never been close to death. Did you see, the cut on his son's face, it is a mindset that you will never experience. This is the real deal perhaps it is too hard to accept that a black man has this knowledge and you don't. Stop hating.
As I said on another comment... It has nothing to do with people of race or country. The dude is not in any correct stance for any combat engagement (feet shoulder with apart, bents knees) and not really fighting. He is dancing... Anyone with any little background in fencing or some martial arts experience can tell you this. Hes off balance and just because hes from a different country or rather a disadvantage country doesn't mean he should be taken more seriously. Use your head!
@@matthewspringer1369 8:56: The engagement went beyond stance, it was a lesson in blade awareness, blade positioning, and blade sensitivity. By positioning the machete on top of the receiver's hand exposing the spine the feeder gave a false read, the downward pressure overloaded the receiver's senses causing the receiver to freeze, then the feeder flipped the blade in response, the receiver's reaction to deflect contributed to unintentional self infliction, but made it easy for the feeder to get the "kill shot."
@@totallysxmmyyt6787 Okay first off im not going to bring in any bad names, be an elitist, or mock you for your judgement because to me it seems like you think fencing is cool and thats really awesome and to be honest I really hope to see more like minded people learn how to fence. I can tell though, you are uninformed BUT you caught something that brings me hope!
This move at 8:56 is called the "Ver dir ober hawet zorn haw ort in drowet" In German fencing and is called the" coule" in French foil/epee, it means to "feel" or "rather run through".. Italians have the same thing but its called something else... I forgot.
Anyways... this move is easy to do and is a fundamental in fencing in fact you learn it at the start as oberhaws are the first cuts you learn in fencing pertaining to cutting weapons. (ie not foil, epee or any other trusting weapons)
It is described as followed: "As your opponent stikes, stike the blade hard against either the stong or weak. This can achieve a different effect. If you strike on the weak, the impact will push his blade slightly downward and off to the side. If you strike on the hard, it will tend to stop the weapon in place. When striking down his stike, the impact will not be edge on edge but rather at the angle of your edge and his flat. This is the counterstrike deflection and the action may even go on to your opponent in one continuous action"- This was taught by Johannas Leichtenauer from the 1300s translated from Sigmund Ringeck to present day!
You see there is no "secret" or magical thing in sword/blade fighting. That is all movie stuff.... I mean there is definitely skill involved in fencing and knowing what to do but mechanically the body is only able to move the weapon in a set amount of ways. There is no hidden things about fencing that no one knows about that has honestly looked at fencing and honestly studied it. Thats one of the beauties of fencing!!!! Its easy to learn but SUPER hard to master and get good at.
If you do a little bit or research you can see how his body isnt in any mechanical advantage at all. Its dancing...
Please I politely ask you though that you do not be one of those people who fantasize and mythicize people pertaining to swords or blade combat. It is wrong and that is how they take your money rob you of real knowledge of how fencing is an art as well as a SCIENCE.
I really hope you do some more research! When you do you will come back and laugh at how crazy this video/guy is. lol
Anyways I hope this somewhat peaks your interest and gets you involved in fencing!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT! Ive been fencing for about 8 years now!! Never regret it.
Anyways if you are interested in learning more there are some great resources our there.
Im sure there are clubs in your area??

^This website has pretty much every historical manuscript pertaining to sword treatises. Theres also a lot of youtube videos and demonstration
Dont get mixed up in the cultures or tribalism that is. Sword/blades are found in every culture. :)
@@matthewspringer1369 The old man is not sparring them. It was a flow & reflex drill, which is common in many martial arts. The machete is practically an improvised weapon from an agricultural tool, being shorter than an actual sword or saber and lacking a guard. The stances and level changes are going to be different from traditional swordsmanship, but the fundamentals are there, even if less refined. These guys are farmers with only a basic education, after all.
@@DownWithThePlague It is identical to lange messer, which is a short german sword used for defense. I've studied it a little in my historical fencing classes. Yeah machete is a farming tool but I respectfully disagree with you on stances. In this video... There is no benefit of not staying on the balls of your feet, nor is there any benefit of turning your back to your opponent to block from behind.
What stances would be different than that from saber to machete?
There aren't any because saber while its curved mostly used for cavalry and is longer moves the same as any other single edged weapon.
You have different stances across cultures and time periods from Italian/German swordsmanship even French but they are fundamentally all the same mechanically just different names... This is because they are proven to work because our bodies and the weapon can only do a certain amount of movements/"things".
All im saying is that this man is a charlatan and he does NOT know what he is teaching... There are no fundamentals here. Are we going to believe him simply because "spirits" told him? Is that his credibility?
Im not bashing Haitian culture or downplaying what they did in their revolution... All im saying is DONT listen to this guy. Hes delusional and doesn't know what hes talking about. Anyone who has a somewhat little background in fencing can tell you this.
"Swordfighting" and fencing are not some sort of mysterious mythical thing. Its about study and practice.

It’s not a secret martial arts. Just learn Kali which is more ancient
I think Kali or Eskrima is still superior. They are just parrying. You should defang the snake or attack the weapon hand to end the fight quickly.
You're making it sound like this one little video covers the entire style which it does not. Your judgement is premature.

@@valoredramack9117 Give me proofs of what you're saying then I'll rest my case.
@@raikey2176 That's not how the burden or proof works. If you're the one making an assumption about which superiority, then the onus is on you to prove it. Your claim is based on an 11 minute video which you are using for comparison, so it's obvious to any logical person that you're using the Hasty Generalization Fallacy. I'm not the one making a premature judgement with limited information, so I am under no obligation to prove a claim that I have not made; the only thing I did was identify your Logical Fallacy and the proof for that is your own reply to a mere 11 minute video. The question you should be asking yourself is whether you even did enough research about this Machete Martial Art to draw such a conclusion. Since it's a secretive art, it's more likely that you simply don't know enough about it in the first place. That's the point that I am making, don't fall for the Dunning-Kruger Effect..
