    I know everybody has their own interpretations but these Zimmerman Ballades in my opinion are THE Definitive standard for the Chopin Ballades. The Drama, Tension, phrasing and dynamics is so spot on. Zimmerman truly understands the intentions of these scores.

      Minor keys are my favorite as well!

    • @Permaclok
      @Permaclok 4 года назад +2

      You are mostly right, but that magic is mostly how Chopin wrote in a certain key but transposing the melody in the relative key (Minor mode while using the same notes as Major) & and using chromaticism liberally on L/R hand - the rest is obviously Chopin's genius in technique/tonality. There is so much to learn from his Ballades, which imho emcompass the essence of the composer.

    • @amg2u
      @amg2u 4 года назад +1

      @@Permaclok can you suggest reading where I could learn more about Chopin's compositional approach? 50+ years listening, mostly first hand by my father playing, later through concerns and recording. I don't play, but an transported not only by the music but by the hands of the pianist, their intimacy with the instrument. It's like to understand more about the composer than what my mind had conjured up!
      That aside, Zimmerman is brilliant, amazingly perceptive, I feel as though I'm hearing this for the first time.

    • @Permaclok
      @Permaclok 4 года назад +4

      @@amg2u I wouldn't be here if I had the full answer to your question. However, even as a musical genius, he was still limited to the 1810-1849 period. The "circle of fifth" seems to be very central though - his key modulations always follow the "flow" of the Co5th (either 5th ahead - dominant // 4th backwards - subdominant. As per structure, he would often use binary form or rounded binary form (Themes ABABA / AABABB/ ABACABA - with ABC being key changes).
      What makes Chopin so beautiful is the balance of joy, sadness, passion, anger & longing.. and this has a lot to do with chord progressions & tonal color (interchangeable chords between Maj and Min & chromatic mediants). It is very hard to look at a Chopin score, and finding anything to improve upon - like if the notes always meant to be together.

      I’m not so sure. In my opinion, some parts of the music do sound like they could be the background music of warfare. That’s what I like about Chopin’s music, in some parts it’s very peaceful and tranquil, and in other parts it gets really agitated and aggressive and I just love how it all feels, and I love how discreetly it transitions.

    I loved Ballad No. 1 when I accidentally stumbled upon it several years ago. I tried to listen to the other Ballades, but, I'll admit it, back then I thought 'meh', nothing exceptional (was a bit arrogant I guess). But then in late 2016 I stumbled across this video. I ended up binge listening to this for a long time. This man made me fall head over heels in love with No. 4 and then No. 2 in quick succession (the Jury is still out on No. 3 but I guess it might eventually get me). I couldn't stop listening to this for several months. I consider myself self taught at the piano, not a pianist, but this performance made me actually want to start all over again and learn formally from the basics upward, not to be able to play this, but just to do justice to any music I try to play once I've got technique and understanding under my belt. That will have to be post-pandemic I suppose but it's on the bucket list.

    I've heard many interpretations of Chopin's Ballades, but like someone mentioned, I definitely feel Zimmerman's are the definitive standard. The flow and the passion within his interpretation really lets the melodic lines dance and ring true- the music moves with a waxing and waning that has depth while remaining crisp and clean. I've listened to this recording on repeat so many times over the years but I've never strayed from this opinion.

      @@dankg55 Overall, it was great.
      Brahms sonata was passionate and wild compared to his early recording.
      Scherzos was played in a special interpretation, but persuasive.
      But there's also some problem. Maybe it's because of age, he lose clarity of the left hand melody in some fast part.For second, compare to his video and recordings, he seemed to pedal way too much sometimes.
      However, the best part was the Encore, he played 3 of Brahms Ballades, his signature tone was back!!
      Perfect and passionate interpretation!!
      All in all, he didn't have perfect tone control as this video now, but his passionate and moving performance still makes him one of the best concerto pianist.

      Thanks for your impressions of that recital by Krystian Zimerman. (Yes, I also noticed Zimerman makes more mistakes then when he was younger. But age might not be a problem now - he is "only" 62! Compared to Artur Rubinstein that's no age ...)

      age is just a number doesnt mean your mental age is the same i would also say this is recording the other thing is live he couldve had his good day in this recordings and than have a bad or average day on stage not sure how that works when ure pro like him but im sure he also has days that he feels it and not dont think there are people with endless intensity every day and hour for the same thing i also dont know if the recording or the live performance is more pressure but for me it would be defenitely the live performance... lot of things to think about

    They are all beautiful, but my favorite is the opening of #2. So charming, as if written for a child, yet it goes on to a turbulent development. I am reminded of the second movement of Mozart's Coronation Concerto, and the third movement, the rondo, of John Field's piano concerto #2. They all have that deceptively childlike quality.

    Ballade means “story”.
    I almost think The Ballades of Chopin describe the birth and death of one. All parts symbolising a different part. I hope to play all of them one day, knowing what they symbolise for me and playing it with such emotion.
