I know everybody has their own interpretations but these Zimmerman Ballades in my opinion are THE Definitive standard for the Chopin Ballades. The Drama, Tension, phrasing and dynamics is so spot on. Zimmerman truly understands the intentions of these scores.
In my personal opinion although Zimmerman has a great understanding of the score, Cortot would be my favorite, personally because his use of freedom and spontaneity.
Something I’ve always loved about this set of ballads, I much prefer the sound of minor keys over major, I love how he makes the major ballades sound minor and the minor ballades sound major, it’s incredible
You are mostly right, but that magic is mostly how Chopin wrote in a certain key but transposing the melody in the relative key (Minor mode while using the same notes as Major) & and using chromaticism liberally on L/R hand - the rest is obviously Chopin's genius in technique/tonality. There is so much to learn from his Ballades, which imho emcompass the essence of the composer.
@@Permaclok can you suggest reading where I could learn more about Chopin's compositional approach? 50+ years listening, mostly first hand by my father playing, later through concerns and recording. It's like to understand more about the composer than what my mind had conjured up! That aside, Zimmerman is brilliant, amazingly perceptive, I feel as though I'm hearing this for the first time.
@@amg2u I wouldn't be here if I had the full answer to your question. However, even as a musical genius, he was still limited to the 1810-1849 period. As per structure, he would often use binary form or rounded binary form (Themes ABABA / AABABB/ ABACABA - with ABC being key changes). What makes Chopin so beautiful is the balance of joy, sadness, passion, anger & longing.. and this has a lot to do with chord progressions & tonal color (interchangeable chords between Maj and Min & chromatic mediants). It is very hard to look at a Chopin score, and finding anything to improve upon - like if the notes always meant to be together.
I’m not so sure. In my opinion, some parts of the music do sound like they could be the background music of warfare. That’s what I like about Chopin’s music, in some parts it’s very peaceful and tranquil, and in other parts it gets really agitated and aggressive and I just love how it all feels, and I love how discreetly it transitions.

15:10 i hear the trascendental etude no 2 by liszt
perfect in every way
"Breathtaking" is not an overstatement! The spirit of Chopin is captured in a way that hasn't been done since Michelangeli.

Ballade means “story”.
I almost think The Ballades of Chopin describe the birth and death of one. All parts symbolising a different part. I hope to play all of them one day, knowing what they symbolise for me and playing it with such emotion.
Watching this should be compulsory for every piano student.
Carlos del Río Silván for every human being
As a piano student I must agree 😂 his technique is absolutely AMAZING. He knows when to move forward and when to pull back on the keys, everything is very smooth. Ballade no. 3 is my dream piece, always brings me to tears. My father worked with Zimerman once for a recording and speaks very highly of him :)
Well yes I agree wholeheartedly but at the right stage as to not discourage em from the great heights such a student could reach
Aiden Maxwell If one such thing can be integrated in your own suc
it should be compulsory for every living human being. can you imagine if the whole world took a moment of respite from all the ugliness and simultaneously stopped to listen to this performance? "the kingdom of heaven is within you" would then come alive and be manifested in the material world
Plot twist: he is the real chopin who time travelled
Chopin must've been through heaven and hell to compose pieces like these.
This is chaotic an yet, at the same time, beatiful. That´s chopin´s magic.
I've never actually listened to the second ballade right after the first. You can really appreciate the quietness and calmness (well, until that part 👀) after the loud (with a positive connotation, I would like to add) first ballade.
So much beauty on this piece of information
Out of the set, I must admit, 1, 2, 3, and 4 are amazing.
My favorit ballads are 3,4,1 and 2
I am no3 BEST!
@@lim3982 i didnt understand
same, 3 4 1 2. But each of them have such a unique and special element that they sometimes rearrange for me.
Sometimes 2 would be my favorite, then 4, then 3, then back to 1
Amazing. Thanks for sharing with us.
How he brings out the meaning of fermatas in the 1st ballade. Half second black holes of dred.
Zimerman is the true master of Chopin
Absolutamente magnífico. Todo. Y el final de la cuarta Balada es espectacular.
Min 4:50 is the best part in the music history.
4:45
You guys are high. Clearly 7:55 trumps all others..
time flies when i listen zimerman interpretations to study !
PIĘKNO MUZYKI FRYDERYKA CHOPINA TO FENOMEN GRANICZĄCY Z CUDEM.
Maravillosa interpretacion!!
It gives me goosebumps with the first 5 notes
This is just perfection..
QUE MARAVILLA DEL CIERRE SIGLO XVIII Y DE DOS MILENIOS
Genio, insuperable. Y con los años sigue tocando e interpretando con el mismo fervor y amor por la música.
