OMG! I came looking for this having heard Dave mention it on the Strike Force Five podcast. I grew up in Canada, and know Bruno Gerussi from the iconic Beachcombers show. I had no idea that this talk show, or Dave's appearance on it, was a thing! Incredible! Thanks for surfacing this, Don!
This was a year before he went on his first appearance on Carson. It’s interesting that many of his jokes here were used a year later. The thing that jumps out to me is how the laughs are not that big.
I remember this show being Canadian and a kid back then, plus Gerussi from the Beachcombers. First time I ever heard Dave was on it was today. Then again I hadn't thought of this show since I was 10 years old .
what a gem of nostalgia! you can hear the one or two memebers of the audience laughing. Perfect who-gives-f--k environment for Letterman to let loose as a standup, before his time!
Stiff standup but a totally natural comedian in a ''real world" scenario. The only thing I remember about Celebrity Cooks is that Bruno would get loaded every show.
This is awesome. Just got finished watching Norm McDonald telling his 'Ol Harold Delaney' story about visiting Vancouver and Dave responding by saying what a great city it is. Then here's Dave visiting Vancouver, touring the Canadian circuit appearing on tv shows like this one with Bruno Gerussi from the Canadian hit show 'The Beach Combers'. Dave seems to have the 'talk enough and jokes will be found' sort of approach. Just proves that without cue cards Dave is funny on his feet anywhere.
Just sharing this because it's always confusing to people not from BC: Harold Delaney was on Vancouver Island; the capital of BC, Victoria city, is located on Vancouver Island; Vancouver city is located across the straight on the mainland. In other words, Victoria city (the provincial capital) is located on Vancouver Island; and there is also Vancouver city on the mainland. Paul even tried to explain this to Dave once and it didn't really seem to click with him. 😅
Closing theme lyrics: Good friends strong neighbours work hard don't save;/slave your labours old friends drunk neighbours I ain't saving no favours/flavours. so many cool guests and always funny Bruno was the best host ever
It's the same show. It was Bob Crane's final appearance. The producers have said that Bob Crane was a delight to work with and the taping went very smoothly. The scene in Auto Focus was complete BS.
Why is the space between the bottom of his nose and his upperlip so protruding and puffy in this? Its really bothering me. Did he have plastic surgery between this and his morning show?
Hey Don, do you have the Celebrity Cooks shows that have Julie Amato as guest? I know that elsewhere there's a video of her singing on this particular series, but I'd love to see her make her recipes (she was on the show twice, and the dishes she made, respectively, were "Paté Julie" and stuffed artichokes).
+Stuart Allard Oh, indeed....I think Canadian content is synonymous with high quality entertainment in everyone's book. What's next? The Trouble with Tracy followed by some Hinterland, Who's who vignettes?
+Gary Taylor Sorry but I'm an American in the middle of a Canadian tv binge on RUclips This show is off the hook. Just saw "Friendly Giant" and "Starlost" I'm fucking loving it Don't mean to be condescending but I find it charming - everything is much more mellow and sweet This Letterman thing is a great example - I worship Dave but he seems like an asshole here. Canadians just don't have the edge, cynicism and sarcasm that Americans have. These shows are a nice change of pace.
+Jane Doe American on a Canadian TV binge??? I'll bet that's the first time that sentence has ever been uttered!! Google Forest Rangers, Space 1999 and Rocket Robin Hood if you REALLY want to see vintage Canadiana. Throw on a little Uncle Bobby while you're at it.
Don, do you have the segment from Late Night where the cooking segment lady got a bit testy with Dave's assistance so he made sure to screw things up for her even more then cut it short?
Thanks for the quick reply, Don. It was just the lady and Dave for the one I'm thinking of which she wanted to be a by the numbers, do exactly as she says to Dave segment and he made sure that didn't happen which flustered her. Of course this is from 30+ years back so maybe I'm remembering wrong. A search of your videos for Bev Tanner sent me to The Bee People appearance.
Not quite as great as when Dave did song & dance numbers on Mary Tyler Moore's ill-fated variety show, but pretty great nonetheless. It's a long, dark road from Bruno Gerussi's TV kitchen to the Ed Sullivan Theater..eh?
Poor bruno. He tried so hard to be serious but the clowns they had on the show turned it into a joke. I used to watch this daily in the 70s and i don't remember a single thing they made that was edible.
It's great to see Dave young but wow did he need more seasoning (no cooking pun intended). He had his cynical ways, but a local host couldn't handle that kind of banter. The stand-up was hard to watch though.

I have little doubt they were referring to this upload.
This is like watching the beginnings of the universe.
Wow. Dave at 29-30 years old. The very beginning of his career. But so much of his act is already there. And, in 🇨🇦. Thanks, Don.
Strike Force Five brought me here.
Dave did a great job of holding this up. Doing a solid standup to a crowd of 12, improv banter while preparing food and finally the souvenier noodles.
This was a year before he went on his first appearance on Carson.

Absolutely sublime clip!
don giller thank you for posting this and a ton of other stuff. ive never seen seen so many hackneyed ex stars on 1 great show!
Fantastic upload!!

I wish there was more of these I remember my dad watching these I guess in repeats when i was real young.
Stiff standup but a totally natural comedian in a ''real world" scenario. The only thing I remember about Celebrity Cooks is that Bruno would get loaded every show.
That's great! Thanks for posting.
Stones of steel. LOL! Really admire this. Was cackling throughout.
Wow! I actually watched this back in the 70s...he was a class act....I really miss his presence. Bruno, that is....
I wish I could see the episode with Sir Stirling Moss. I watched it at the time. Moss died today.
He then got the Mary Tyler Moore variety show alongside Michael Keaton and then the Tonight Show appearance.

This is surreal
Wish my apartment looked like that.
Closing theme lyrics: Good friends strong neighbours work hard don't save;/slave your labours old friends drunk neighbours I ain't saving no favours/flavours. so many cool guests and always funny Bruno was the best host ever
My hometown!
What is the name of the theme song (and who sings it) that plays while the closing credits are rolling?
Don, where are you getting this stuff? Amazing to see Dave acts the same way in the 70's cooking with people, mocking things and creating near mayhem.
Trades from decades ago.
fun. thanks
Nice to see a one hand egg break.
Letterman ended his monologue with the same joke from his sportscaster sketch with Michael Jackson from 'The Jacksons' CBS variety show.
Classic CBC Daytime
absolute mayhem
I remember this. LOL.
From what I remember, this show is what replaced The Galloping Gourmet? I think it's even filmed in the same studio.
Is this the cooking show that was featured in Auto Focus? Seems so
It's the same show. It was Bob Crane's final appearance. The producers have said that Bob Crane was a delight to work with and the taping went very smoothly. The scene in Auto Focus was complete BS.
I can't add an image here, but watch the credits and see who the "Food Assistant" was ...
Susan Morton. What's the reference?
Got to 24:16 - right after Ms Morton.
Ah, sorry. I stopped too soon. I doubt it's the same Chuck Norris. By 1977 he was already in his first starring film, "Breaker! Breaker!"
If it's him, the credit didn't make it to his IMDB page. :-D
Why is the space between the bottom of his nose and his upperlip so protruding and puffy in this? Its really bothering me. Did he have plastic surgery between this and his morning show?
You're hallucinating. He was younger.

No, sorry. This is the only one I have.
When Vancouver gets snow the Intiour or Calgary laughs?
Just what RUclips needs: more Canadian content. :P
+Stuart Allard Oh, indeed....I think Canadian content is synonymous with high quality entertainment in everyone's book. What's next? The Trouble with Tracy followed by some Hinterland, Who's who vignettes?
+Gary Taylor Maybe some "Mr. D" outtakes?

+Jane Doe .....and oh yeah, check out King of Kensington!! Enjoy!!!😁
Bruno is a Canadian icon
Don, do you have the segment from Late Night where the cooking segment lady got a bit testy with Dave's assistance so he made sure to screw things up for her even more then cut it short?
Bev Tanner, the mom with 89 children?
Thanks for the quick reply, Don. It was just the lady and Dave for the one I'm thinking of which she wanted to be a by the numbers, do exactly as she says to Dave segment and he made sure that didn't happen which flustered her. Of course this is from 30+ years back so maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Your memory is likely spot on. Problem is, mine isn't. I'll see what I can find.
Hang in...Dave loosens up mid-show.
24:16 - Maybe the noodles are tough because the food assistant is Chuck Norris.
Not quite as great as when Dave did song & dance numbers on Mary Tyler Moore's ill-fated variety show, but pretty great nonetheless. It's a long, dark road from Bruno Gerussi's TV kitchen to the Ed Sullivan Theater..eh?
Wow

STRIKE FORCE FIVE!!
Dave was already sober at this point so it would've gotten REALLY sloppy if he had tasted the wine.
God lord, stole bruno's show out from under him lol dave is same dave here as always lol wow so awesome
Dave would be illegal in Canada
I think Dave would have been handsome if he had better hair.
Hilarious...
It's great to see Dave young but wow did he need more seasoning (no cooking pun intended). He had his cynical ways, but a local host couldn't handle that kind of banter. The stand-up was hard to watch though.
