This is my favorite song on the album. I'm usually a big proponent of a rhyme scheme in songs because I just think it sounds more natural, but the lack of a rhyme scheme here really allows the singer to open up with the lyrics... the melody still flows with it and doesn't lose any magic. One of the reasons I love this band so much is that their songs have a nostalgic sound to them. There's something about their songs that make me think they could have been recorded in the 50's or 60's. That was well before my time, but that nostalgic factor amplifies their relatable lyrics and makes me feel, in some strange way, that I lived it. Well f***ing done, Menzingers.. I loved the "After the Party" album, and didn't think you could top it, but you've done it.
I think this is the reason "Your Wild Years" was my favorite from the last album. It has that same kind of open feel to it, and I couldn't get enough of that one either!
[Verse 1] May the highways cross their fingers and hope That we may one day find ourselves home She sticks her head outside the passenger window Sighs as traffic stops and goes It’s been two weeks now living in this southern town We hoped the change would change our restless minds A little rewind to a simpler time I swear it’s temporary living in this cheap motel Somewhere in the bible belt We made love at that Marietta Motel 6 You fell asleep on my shoulder of commitment Took it as a sign everything would be fine Sometimes it takes these kind of nights just to realize How we want to spend the rest of our lives Chorus] Could a diamond in the rough ever be enough I’ve been mining for your love Since the day that we met I’ve spent every second in your minefield digging it up Can you strain your memory back to the times When trouble wasn’t always, always on our minds Trouble wasn’t always on our minds Back to the times when trouble wasn’t always on our minds [Verse 2] And now the hotel maids were bangin’ down the door As if they came looking for some answers When ya gonna leave? Where ya gonna go? Will you get your shit together? When are you gonna marry her? Well maybe you don’t deserve her Maybe the whole thing was doomed from the start This inquisition is tearing me apart [Chorus] Could a diamond in the rough ever be enough I’ve been mining for your love Since the day that we met I’ve spent every second in your minefield digging it up Can you strain your memory back to the times When trouble wasn’t always on our minds Can you strain your memory one more time When trouble wasn’t always, always on our minds When trouble wasn’t always on our minds Back to the times when trouble wasn’t always on our minds
This may be my favorite off the whole album. There are few things I love more than when that first chill of fall sets in and The Menzingers put out new music that makes me feel nostalgic for a life I've never even lived. I love this band so much
I recently discovered this song and I’ve had to force myself to stop listening to it, so I don’t burn out on it. Yet, I can’t stop and keep coming back every day 😂 I also discovered the ‘from exile’ version of this and that’s equally as good. A good different but just as good. So far, it’s my favourite Menzingers song. The drum rhythm/song pacing is so, so, catchy. Combined that with the beautiful crafted lyrics that invoke imagery of a life I feel I’ve lived, and you’ve got one hell of a song.

[Verse 1]
May the highways cross their fingers and hope
That we may one day find ourselves home
She sticks her head outside the passenger window
Sighs as traffic stops and goes
It’s been two weeks now living in this southern town
We hoped the change would change our restless minds
A little rewind to a simpler time
I swear it’s temporary living in this cheap motel
Somewhere in the bible belt
We made love at that Marietta Motel 6
You fell asleep on my shoulder of commitment
Took it as a sign everything would be fine
Sometimes it takes these kind of nights just to realize
How we want to spend the rest of our lives
Chorus]
Could a diamond in the rough ever be enough
I’ve been mining for your love
Since the day that we met I’ve spent every second in your minefield digging it up
Can you strain your memory back to the times
When trouble wasn’t always, always on our minds
Trouble wasn’t always on our minds
Back to the times when trouble wasn’t always on our minds
[Verse 2]
And now the hotel maids were bangin’ down the door
As if they came looking for some answers
When ya gonna leave? Where ya gonna go?
Will you get your shit together?
When are you gonna marry her?
Well maybe you don’t deserve her
Maybe the whole thing was doomed from the start
This inquisition is tearing me apart
[Chorus]
Could a diamond in the rough ever be enough
I’ve been mining for your love
Since the day that we met I’ve spent every second in your minefield digging it up
Can you strain your memory back to the times
When trouble wasn’t always on our minds
Can you strain your memory one more time
When trouble wasn’t always, always on our minds
When trouble wasn’t always on our minds
Back to the times when trouble wasn’t always on our minds
