It was nice to see Mak talking a bit more today! Always love her; her opinions are great and reflexive and she is always funny. But today I enjoyed her even more! Lots of love to all of you ❤
Well, I really didn't realize I was compressing all my feelings about this election until now? I wanna hug this is my first year voting because I just turned 18 last year. And I don't know why it hurt so much, but it does. But thank you guys for spreading kindness and laughter as always
Congratulations on voting! Please do so every chance you can. So many people don't vote if the outcome is predetermined. But aside from all the other important stuff on the ballot, voting can make a red area look a little purple, which can encourage more blues to vote next time, and so on. I've voted for the losing side in so many elections. But I also helped turn a county, giving the UK our first Palestinian MP Truly, thanks for voting x
@@mariannetfinches no, absolutely. I'm from georgia, so I make every area purple, we possibly can, and yes, I plan on voting for every election I possibly can
32:36 okay but genuine answer from an ex-mormon who did a lot of writing and highlighting in the bible (and other fake books of scripture) you can highlight in the bible but it will bleed through to other pages because bible pages are thin, so we mostly use special colored pencils. we also like to gift these special colored pencils to each other for days like when we get baptized, or before we go on missions. people get really specific and organized with it too, so they'll have like one color for verses where Jesus speaks directly, one color for verses about purity, or love, or whatever. marking in scripture is an art form, and one that i was never good at. maybe thats why i left 😅
Woah the way you guys talked about communication via social media and 'seeing the matrix' was so fascinating. Just you guys' ability to put into words you understanding of the industries your part of is so interesting and I haven't really heard other people talk with that kind of honesty. So thanks for putting this stuff online cos its so cool to listen to people talk eloquently about their experiences of life that I'll never have, but also I hope you manage to get away from all the social media stuff asap for your own health lol.
Mak's reason to read the bible is the same reason I did my M.phil thesis with religion and conversion camps - just to be able to tell off my family lol
A lot of people try to write films but can't get their scripts in front of the people who have the money and decision-making power to make the things, so the fact that Lucas was actually approached by a producer instead of pitching it cold is an excellent sign. Super excited to see what comes out of his and Ashley's work. (In like two+ years I guess, based on the small amount I have seen of the glacial pace of the TV/film industry lol)
it is an excellent sign that has happened to me many times that has never worked out, but, it is fun to write with a friend. fuck show business man. thanks for letting me make my art without these guys gatekeeping.
"You can see the Matrix" I'm not a social media professional like you two, but I call that pattern recognition! Once you know about a topic, you can't unsee the patterns.
I'm only 20 minutes in and have to pause to say how much I appreciate the ~behind the curtain~ conversation about social media and how it's forced to be done to get more work. There are so many creative endeavors I have been seeking out since the pandemic and part of my hesitation to share it is because of the digital footprint of it all. I think about this nearly everyday. I work in public service and am terrified of having something I would put out there taken out of context and costing me my job so I instead have a private profile and haven't uploaded anything I've worked on. I wrote a comedy script with a friend (that we are really proud of!) and we did submit it for a few things but only a few people in my life know about it. This conversation highlights that I have a lot to lose if I do decide to put my creative side out there and I'm honestly grateful for it. Thanks, boyzzzzzz.
That's why authoritarianism and censorship is the death of progress, art, and not to be dramatic but, the meaning of life. I hope you find the courage to express yourself to the world one day
Mak, a suggestion about reading the Bible! Get a good translation! I read it in college in literature/philosophy class, and our academic translation was great, tons of footnotes. Certain (crappy) translations make stuff up, like putting the word "homosexual" in even though that concept is from the late 19th century and definitely not from ancient Hebrew and Greek. Maybe check what translations are considered legit by scholars. And yes, you can totally mark up a Bible. I know religious Christians who mark passages they're studying, and non-religious literary folks who underline /highlight sections as well.
Just going to give a little: your post makes it sound like the concept of being gay (not the sexual orientation but the relationships and acts) is only a late 19th concept. So for anyone else reading this: the actual concept of sexual orientation is a newer concept. But ancient Greeks ABSOLUTELY had homosexual relationships and homosexual acts. This is why we have Sappho etc; a lot of wlw related stuff had been destroyed and lost to time, but we do have little things thanks to Sappho, where Sapphic and Lesbian terms derived from, and when it came to homosexuality with men it’s a well known fact it existed but it was also a complicated topic. It is well documented though, and it’s always been there 💚 Just in case someone reads this and goes “huh? Homosexuality only existed in the 19th century and not before?” As some people may not be aware of these things 💚 the actual acts and the concept of same sex relationships was there, simply the words and orientations were not.
@@RowanWolf22 I tend to think the fact that gays have always existed is just a given, haha 😅 I guess I forget sometimes that not everyone realizes that.
wishing you well on all your various endeavors to rebuild an improved audience/career that allows you to pursue all of the passion projects and writing that you want! i find it encouraging that you continue to move forward, in my own life, i feel like i backslid this past year and it’s so frustrating and makes me sad, so thank you for the reminder to step into my agency and keep it pushing. hope to see more projects from you in the future!
Listener: Pain is not a bad thing! It's ok that it's hurting right now! It will get better! Feel your feelings! And also: whenever I go to a gay bar and talk to people about their relationship drama: thank god I'm single and my ex is not in the room! 😅 and yes, go to a comedy show. Watch Ashley's special!!!
34:27 I related to this example of “grief” so much 😂 I was in a WEIRD headspace when I realized it was my college ex girlfriend’s 30th birthday… like, she’s still out there doing stuff somewhere and I have no idea what she’s up to! It doesn’t matter to me at all, but it was a weird reminder that we’re like, actual adults now in the world.
Yes you are allowed to highlight a bible, and mak... what you are talking about is so valid... I literally went to school for christian mission stuff. But within that, i found apologetics... which is defending the God I do believe in to people within and outside a religious belief. It is a study of seeing both sides, and finding text to defend both different opinions and finding a common ground. And side note I am now a cafe manager.... not someone pushing god down your throat, i just get to learn and connect with people everyday. I would encourage you to learn religious texts any and all, if it makes you more settled. ❤
I laughed so hard when Ashley complained about the women talking about moving from their lives going in lines to a circle, because that is a huge talking point in southern churches about how life is lived in circles, not rows 😂
I have been having the same thoughts on the Bible!! I’m so sick of it being used as some shit against us when really they are generally misinterpreting and twisting the words.
I agree with Mak on Steve!! When I first watched SATC some years ago I thought he was great but, after rewatching this, I feel like trapped her with a baby and was ALWAYS insecure about her being more successful than him, and somehow he got her to change everything for him while he didn’t adapt to any of her needs.
Mak talking about rereading the Bible, I am currently doing the same. I want to read it through my deconstructed eyes, without others telling me what it means.
The bible thing: unless you’ve got a super strength memory, I’d underline bits (don’t highlight, the ink will bleed through those annoying single ply thin pages) and then bookmark those pages with what the comeback is for. Eg “gawd said it’s a sin” on the bookmark and then you can just turn to that page and biblesplain with “well ACTUALLY…” Of course it’ll be a pain in the butt having to carry the brick with you everywhere to whip out when someone says something dumb.
When I was a teen and would go to the christian store there were specific "bible highlighters" that you could buy. They were basically just colored pencils but the bleed on the thin paper is definitely something to be wary of.
I've thought about reading the bible like Mak, but ultimately I decided I don't actually care what it says exactly. At this point the only person in my life who is that religious is my grandmother. And I'm not going to debate a 90 year old on her religion. I just smile and nod the few times it comes up.
