  • This is a quick desensitization video showing a horse that is slightly more reactive.
however this is one of those things that you will repeat the process in each time we do it'll probably be a little bit easier for her to do. desensitization is an ongoing thing with horses that are more reactive so you have to keep coming back to it.

My 19yr. old Haflinger was standing in the rain when I walked up to his paddock holding an umbrella. He immediately took flight. He has done this before so I decided it was time we worked on this problem. He is somewhat spooky by nature so I've done a lot of ground work, but haven't ridden him more than a few times in the 4 yrs. I have owned him. I spent a good 30 min. approaching him and retreating when I saw his concern. ( Warwick Schiller's Principals of Training) A couple of times he came up to me looking for a treat which makes me wonder if this is just a a game to him or an excuse to race around the paddock..Haflingers are very smart.

Thank you so much for your comment. In my experience you just end up doing a lot of desensitization training and introduce new things to the horse everyday, for weeks or maybe even months and they'll start to accept it a whole lot better and they do get better but it is something that you have to keep doing. Some horses it takes longer than others, this particular horse we do refreshers every week. Sometimes it goes good sometimes it takes a little bit longer. Please check out my other desensitization videos for ideas.
