Those Heinz tortellini pouches are delicious, I pack them in my adv riding kit, I mix a 100 gram pouch of Safcol tuna in with it to make a more substantial meal. I've found if you put them next to the fire but not too close and turn them a couple of times it works well for heating without using boiling water.
Thank you Andrew. This might convince viewers that I don't make this s*** up lol. I'll try it near the fire next time. I only use the boiling water when water is not in short supply (next to a creek or similar). Otherwise, after heating the meal, you can still use the water for coffee or something similar. Thanks for your input.
Great trip so far Steve. I've been homebound for a few days in isolation with a case of the "bug" hope to be back out there for the long weekend. Enjoying re-watching some of your older videos.

Gday Steve, another Aussie cinema classic. Everything except a car chase and sex scene! Beautiful drone shots along the red cliffs and big billabong. Hope old mates ankle is ok.
Three Riders and sex scenes should never appear in the same sentence...no Broke Back Mountain shenanigans on this trip lol. There is a little bit of high speed action coming up (watch this space) and JP's ankle lasts the journey (just). Thanks for watching.
Waaaaaah that brought back amazing memories of Skull Springs Road! 😍🙏 Thank you for the goosebumps! Just a quick question. With the BMW GS having a 19" front wheel, does it make it more sketchy in sand than a 21" wheel would like on my WR450 ?. Im thinking of getting a second hand 1200 to do mile crunching. Not extreme stuff like you amazing people do, that's my WR450 for that but worried that on general hard dirt tracks the 19" wheel is not as good.
Hi Steve Ah yes the zero mph fall…..Hey that’s my specialty lol Another great video series. Breathtaking scenery, awesome roads, knowledgeable advise and that element of suspense. I could see (and hear from your engine) your tire choice made some sections more challenging than they might have been. As you mentioned in the first video: a trade off for extra miles / kilometers. I think anyone riding those sections without your level of experience and skill would have been in real trouble though, even with more off road biased tires. Looking forward to watching the next one. Slangevar Craig
Hi Craig, overall the tyre was suitable for the trip. A big block knobby might have come in handy as you have pointed out but in the main the TKC70 Rocks did ok. Next vid out later this week (I think). Thanks for watching.
Another great video Steve. Beautifully edited. Been out that way a few times and brought back fond memories, including the incessant flies and shriveled nose boogers from the dry heat. Was holding my breath as you crawled through the gravel bed at the creek, treacherous stuff on a heavy bike. Looking forward to the next one, thanks!
Subbed. Nice. I'm new to motorcycle never ridden my entire life. But because of mid life crisis. I have to do this still on L. From KTM will upgrade soon to an adventure bike and ride around Australia eating pies, fish and chips. 🤣 Wish me luck. And enjoy the ride. Cheerio!
Welcome to the Channel. Hope you enjoy the content. My only advice…take small steps. Don’t go out and by a big adventure bike, load it up with 40kg of gear and then expect to take it in places it wasn’t meant to go. Start small and gradually build up your skill set to handle more and more difficult conditions. Good luck.
What a great compliment...thank you so much. I consider myself just a schmuck with a camera who likes to record and share the adventures. I like to think i have improved over the years and my reward is that others like to view and keep coming back. I dont know about you, but im not in it for the money lol. Thanks for the positive feedback.
Spectacular footage Steve. And good on you for educating the Grasshoppers on looking after the bush. Just out of curiosity are there any Crocs in the Gorge?
I have found your channel / videos not only interesting but so helpful and informative. I was able to learn a lot before I headed from Qld to Perth on my 1200gs Adventure for the birth of our first grandchild. Not sure if I can get any advice from you for my return trip home over the top while I am in Perth?
@@mongreldogproductions well Steve I am adventurous, but I wonder if my off road technical ability is proficient enough. I am riding alone so would appreciate some advice on what is possible to see as much of what WA has to offer without heading into gnarly territory. “ and there’s no shame in that” I hear you say. 😁 thanks
G'day Steve, always look forward to your videos coming out. I was wondering what brand of pannier bags you are using and are they the same ones on Chris's DR650?
They are made by the same manufacturer but a different production 'series'. They are made by Steel Ponies but i think they have shut up shop. The nearest thing you'll find now is by Andy Strapz. Thanks for watching.
Great drone shots. Im surprised your friend is still riding on with a fractured foot. I thought it would swell up and he would not be able to get his boot on or off. What is the minimum S.S.D. when setting up your tents? Snore. Separation Distance
SSD...funny! I usually wait until i see where these other 2 fuc***s set up and then I'll get as far away as i can (although I dont wanna be too far from the fire)....usually about 15 metre minimum. Mind you, noise (farting, snoring, talking in sleep) travels a long way at night. His foot/ankle did swell but he would rest it each evening with cold packs (from ice bought locally before we pull up where we could). He was in some pain. It gets worse...keep watching.
Steel Ponies...I think they have gone guts up. The nearest thing you might find is/are Andy Strapz bags. Do a Google search...you'll come up with something. Thanks for watching.
Really good video and very informative. Not that I'll ever be doing a tour like this and proves the point if you do a tour like this you definitely don't do it on your own
@@mongreldogproductions i found the r1200 quite easy to pickup compared to my ducati multistrada 1200 enduro. The boxer engine keeps the bike at a halfway up , rather than a died lift from flat off the ground.
Steel Ponies...I think they have gone guts up. The nearest thing you might find is/are Andy Strapz bags. Do a Google search...you'll come up with something. Thanks for watching.
They amputated the leg just below the knee…nah, not really. A Weber B fracture (whatever that means). A moon boot for 6 weeks and then he’ll be back in the saddle. Thanks for watching.
Wow... such an incredible part of our country... and to think I'm there right now... even though I'm actually on the sunny coast ...all at the same time. Steve, don't leave me hanging... I need to finish this trip... 😁😠😏😂
I have to say, I’d never considered very long distance desert touring on an adventure bike until I came across Mongrel Dog, Now a Africa twin and some time off work is on the horizon.
Hi Paul, Nah, that's not what i am about. I generally dont endorse a product or criticise them either. The closest thing you'll get is this vid... ruclips.net/video/dla90L9BkJY/видео.html Thanks for watching.
@@mongreldogproductions Fair enough, always curious to see peoples experience with different things. I used to work near Tennant Creek at a gold mine and have explored a few of the areas you have ridden. Curious as to what maps you use. If you ever get to the states give me a jingle.
@@darmah1959 it’s a little complicated…I try and fly under the radar. You won’t find a FB page, nor Instagram or similar Social Media page for me or Mongrel Dog Productions. The only way you could have contact is by posting up your own details (email or similar) and I could contact you that way. Once we established contact you can delete your ‘comment’ to provide some privacy. There is another option…contact the BMW Motorcycle Club of WA (Western Australia), give them your details and ask for them to pass the message onto me. Did you have a particular question?
Yeah, I get it. I have a DR as well but i keep that for the snotty stuff. If i am going to cross the Continent, I'd rather do it on the 1200 if possible.
Like someone else said - your videos keep getting better and better. Recommended you to a friend when I sent him some examples of well done adventure riding content :) OK now for a question - how much do these bikes weight fully loaded? (just curious) Great video and thanks for sharing! :)
Weight? Too scared to think. BMW R1200 - 230kg (500lbs) wet (with fuel/oil) and probably another 50kg of gear and equipment. JP's Africa Twin would be slightly lighter but only by a few kgs. The DR650 is the lightweight at about 180kg plus his gear and equipment. Thanks for sharing the Channel.
@@mongreldogproductions You were one of the folks who steered me towards Roz's channel, so thanks for that :) I have a heavyweight bike for pavement trips (Versys 650) and loaded down it is in the same weight class as those bikes - in the 525+ lbs category - and I've never been able to pick up the darn thing anyway. It would be frightening on dirt. So most of the time I'm using the much-modified CRF250L for that kind of trip. Planning to try the Idaho BDR this year and maybe more.
Great scenery along the creeks and waterholes Steve. Sure looks tough going for the bikes. Something to be said for travelling with a few mates to help each other getting the bikes bake on the wheels. Nice footage of the camels too.
Another superb video. Especially enjoyed the drone footage. You're an inspiration Steve. I think we all want a mate like Steve who can lead us on adventures like this.
I like your ADV vlogs very much, but tell why you have such a large bike, and not something around a 650- 700cc, something more manageable. I personally have a 400cc, and use it double up, on long trips, I don't flog it, and as I am pretty used to sand as it is where I live , am very used to 2uping in riding it well.
Hi Ric, to be honest, if I had to explain it to you, you wouldn’t understand. I have a smaller bike; a DR650. I’m not sure where you’re located (country) but here in Australia, you can ride across the country which is equivalent to London to Moscow and still not be at your destination. My last big trip (Perth to the northern most tip of Australia) was 12,000km. My R1200 has only been out of the shed about 10 times but when I go for a ride, I REALLY go for a ride. The bike has covered 120,000 km and I would have no hesitation in jumping on it and crossing our Continent again. You would be hard pressed to get a single or twin cylinder mid ranged bike capable of that sort of reliability. Thankfully, I have the skill set to be able to pilot the bike in places that it wasn’t designed to go, in relative comfort, and confident that it will get me home Granted, it is a handful in the snotty stuff but the bike is very versatile and only limited by the Riders ability. For what I do ( and we are all different) I find it meets my needs and is perfect for covering huge distances in relative comfort. Thanks for watching.
I feel bad because I use to shower and wash in the river . I do use environmentally safe soap but I don't trust most companies lol. I think sometimes the obvious things don't appear obvious for me . Thank you for your advice !
OMG! That's hard yakka - I was saying how hard would it be to keep balance with the bike so heavy and loaded & the ground so uneven & unpredictable, and whack your mate comes a cropper, then you! Said it'd be enough to break yer ankle - hope he had no long term effects. The Gorge was attractive.
Hi SW, just another day at the Office lol. Most of us, know what we sign up for when we go on these rides in this sort of terrain. You can’t predict every situation but we generally have an idea on the conditions before we leave. JP was unlucky. He’s made a full recovery. Thanks for watching.
Maybe, but in the right hands (depending on your skill set) they are the best way to cover big distances in the Ozzie Outback in relative comfort. Horses for courses. Thanks for watching.
Your videos just keep getting better and better. Having a good story is the centrepiece of any production and I love the way you have augmented the story with other useful facts and information such as the charcoal sock. The drone footage was used perfectly to elicit the beauty and ruggedness of the terrain, bikes leaving in a group and the spectacular revealing of the Carowine Gorge.

They are made by the same manufacturer but a different production 'series'. They are made by Steel Ponies but i think they have shut up shop. The nearest thing you'll find now is by Andy Strapz. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic, must be beer time
It must be...
@@mongreldogproductions it's 5'o clock somewhere
@@Kurtis11266. Who needs to wait until 5 o'clock?
Another entertaining show mate.
Hi Ken, Are you missin' Australia yet?
@@mongreldogproductions we are building our retirement home in Atherton mate and will one-day leave Singapore to live in it. You're always welcome
The first time I went riding with my mate 25 years ago I set up my tent far away SSD, they thought I was an unsociable prick, till the next morning.
Great Trip Steve. What Saddle Bags do you use.
Steel Ponies...I think they have gone guts up. The nearest thing you might find is/are Andy Strapz bags. Do a Google search...you'll come up with something. Thanks for watching.
Really good video and very informative. Not that I'll ever be doing a tour like this and proves the point if you do a tour like this you definitely don't do it on your own
safety in numbers for sure.
The AT looked a lot harder to pick up!
They’re all heavy when lying on their side…
@@mongreldogproductions i found the r1200 quite easy to pickup compared to my ducati multistrada 1200 enduro. The boxer engine keeps the bike at a halfway up , rather than a died lift from flat off the ground.
Good work..what type of saddlebags you running. Cheers

Great vid. How’d that ankle go?
They amputated the leg just below the knee…nah, not really. A Weber B fracture (whatever that means). A moon boot for 6 weeks and then he’ll be back in the saddle. Thanks for watching.
Wow... such an incredible part of our country... and to think I'm there right now... even though I'm actually on the sunny coast ...all at the same time. Steve, don't leave me hanging... I need to finish this trip... 😁😠😏😂
Be patient Grasshopper...watch this space.
I have to say, I’d never considered very long distance desert touring on an adventure bike until I came across Mongrel Dog, Now a Africa twin and some time off work is on the horizon.
Do it! No turning back. Opens up a whole new world. Thanks for watching.
18:27 pollute the water? hahaha what about the croc's?
Another great vid, I like the suspense at the end. So, which is easier to lift. Fully laden GSA or Africa? :)
When you have three (big , burly. middle aged, balding, overweight, fat bastards) there is no comparison. There're all bloody heavy!
Have you ever done gear and equipment reviews? Especially things like tires, GPS, maps, luggage, etc.
Hi Paul, Nah, that's not what i am about. I generally dont endorse a product or criticise them either. The closest thing you'll get is this vid...

@@mongreldogproductions Fair enough, always curious to see peoples experience with different things. I used to work near Tennant Creek at a gold mine and have explored a few of the areas you have ridden. Curious as to what maps you use.
If you ever get to the states give me a jingle.
Do you have a website or such and a way to contact you not on youtube?
@@darmah1959 it’s a little complicated…I try and fly under the radar. You won’t find a FB page, nor Instagram or similar Social Media page for me or Mongrel Dog Productions. The only way you could have contact is by posting up your own details (email or similar) and I could contact you that way. Once we established contact you can delete your ‘comment’ to provide some privacy. There is another option…contact the BMW Motorcycle Club of WA (Western Australia), give them your details and ask for them to pass the message onto me. Did you have a particular question?
Those big bikes may be comfortable but give me the DR any day
Yeah, I get it. I have a DR as well but i keep that for the snotty stuff. If i am going to cross the Continent, I'd rather do it on the 1200 if possible.
I’m a little bit addicted to your uploads. I think it’s fair to say you haven’t wasted your life sitting around on ya bum. Well done 👍
Hi GR, addiction is good (in this case). I have had an interesting life….and it’s not over yet. Thanks for the support.
What are the 3 bikes Steve? Beautiful video work and drone shots. That river was stunning
Me on a BMW R1200GSA, Chris on a Suzuki DR650 and JP on a Honda Africa Twin (1,000cc). Glad you're enjoying the journey.
@@mongreldogproductions Many thanks for that and definitely enjoying the journey. Cheers from Nu Zulland
Like someone else said - your videos keep getting better and better. Recommended you to a friend when I sent him some examples of well done adventure riding content :)
OK now for a question - how much do these bikes weight fully loaded? (just curious)
Great video and thanks for sharing! :)
@@mongreldogproductions You were one of the folks who steered me towards Roz's channel, so thanks for that :)
I have a heavyweight bike for pavement trips (Versys 650) and loaded down it is in the same weight class as those bikes - in the 525+ lbs category - and I've never been able to pick up the darn thing anyway.
I'm just wondering, when it's lots of water, are you not allowed to go, 20 meters on one side of the road or?? Where there is no water or mud?????
Hi Leif, it can get a bit tricky…
Watch this vid….it might answer your question.

Another superb video. Especially enjoyed the drone footage. You're an inspiration Steve. I think we all want a mate like Steve who can lead us on adventures like this.
'Lead'...I was just following the bloke in front lol.
You're welcome. Forgive yourself and move on. Thanks for watching.
Excellent video👍cheers
Hey Steve am looking for a drone what do you use?
Mavic Pro 2...probably old technology nowadays. If i had to replace it i would get a smaller one...more compact. This thing takes up a bit of room.
Broken ankle and he keeps going 🍻
Yeah, a tough cookie! Mind you, he was whinging a lot about the pain lol.
adventure here we go...
Grab ya gear; let’s go!
Big, heavy bikes look like a lot of trouble to me. Heavy, thirsty, expensive, and dangerous in the wrong hands.
Maybe, but in the right hands (depending on your skill set) they are the best way to cover big distances in the Ozzie Outback in relative comfort.
Horses for courses.
Thanks for watching.
@@mongreldogproductions I'm planning on trying something like this when I retire. Still got to learn to ride, and I'll be starting out small for sure.
