I really like how the big train, although he was replacing the little one, wasn’t depicted as just your average villain. Alot of the time in old Disney films they would often depict the bigger newer objects as villainous or just snobby. And while the larger engine is tougher and meaner looking you never actually see him insult the smaller engine. He’s just there to do his job and replace what anyone would see as obsolete. He even is rescued by the smaller one from plummeting to his doom and is allowed to emote when things are going wrong. New things arn’t necessarily bad or should be feared
Such a beautiful film! I would love to see this as either a series or as a full movie! I would be very curious to see a potential plot that dives into Samson being reassigned to haul freight. I’d also like to see Samson having to deal with the streamlined steam engine chugging on the repaired bridge at the end replacing him since that engine is much faster and can pull a whole lot more passenger cars. Samson would then turn to Linus as friend who knows what it is like to be replaced and help him come to terms with the fact that he is no longer the best steam engine to get the job done anymore. A story like that can really teach a valuable lesson about humility and being humble because it will only be a matter of time before a bigger, stronger and faster locomotive will replace the previous one. The plot can then expand to include the gradual phasing out of steam locomotives for more efficient diesel locomotives but then having a few members of the general public hold a dear nostalgia for steam engines, leading them to restore steam locomotives and keep them alive. Having progress and nostalgia be at odds with each other would make for such an interesting theme for a sequel or series!
I remember when I was younger, watching the original test animation always wishing would be finished and when it did, it was everything I wanted, but something I like to think is true is that Samson is just doing what he’s told to because he’ll probably be punished if he doesn’t or just scrapped

I have literally never commented on a RUclips video, but I had to stop and applaud the creator! My 4 y.o. son and I stumbled across it and he LOVES it. He has watched it probably 50 times since discovering it 3 days ago, hums the music, and plays pretend that he’s the engineer for Samson (he likes the bigger train - insists it’s the turtle who is the problem as he keeps getting in the way 😂). At any rate, wonderful creation that captures that feeling Disney cartoons used to. Bravo!
