Their version Cross-eyed Mary by Jethro Tull was the first time I heard anything by Maiden played on the radio back in the early 80's. Being a B side Maiden were not happy with DJs playing it and put the kybash on it. Personally, I think this was a huge mistake. Lots of bands get big time exposure playing covers on the radio when they're trying to break into a new market. As you know Maiden really aren't that big in the USA and things might have been different if they allowed American radio the opportunity to play it.
Oh man all of those 80's B-sides were incredible...That Girl...Juanita...Massacre...King of Twilight...Cross Eyed Mary...another gem although it was not a cover was The Sheriff of Huddersfield...classic stuff!!
Nothing beats the Di'Anno live version of I've Got The Fire. The tempo, raw energetic sound of drums and guitars, soulful raspy voice and the few moments of guitar feedback give it the ultimate hard-rock/metal feel. It's still rock ' roll actually but in a most agressive garage/punky form.
As an Irish person, I love Maiden's cover of Thin Lizzy's Massacre - an appropriate cover given Lizzy were a massive influence on the Maiden sound and style
@Metal Head most of the bands have the dumbest takes and most of those comments come from insecurity. The synth stuff was about throwing shade to Ozzy and Dio, the punk stuff about throwing shade to discharge and bands like that and later about the thrash bands. The band aren't outright assholes (aside from Bruce who is a pretty nasty guy) but they are pretty passive aggressive
IMO, Maiden's 80's b-sides were a treasure, part of the band's mystique, and part of the reason some call 80-88 the golden years. They could make any song sound amazing. Shame they sort of abandoned this otherwise great gimmick since 2000
First of all I love your videos and am a fan. I’d like to comment that my favorite Maiden cover is of Jethro Tull’s “Cross Eyed Mary”. Simply brilliant and has the signature Maiden flavor IMO. Would love to hear them play it live. Cheers from the USA and wishing you the best.
Cover of FM's That Girl from the B side of Stranger in a Strange Land, hands down. Having shivers every time I hear that guitar section. The way they made it sound Somewhere in Time-like is mindblowing.
Being a huge Maiden fan for so long, these are the kind of videos I most appreciate. Where you dive into some obscure topic. Awesome. More of that please! 🤘🇺🇦
When I saw them in 1983 on the Piece of Mind Tour (Long Beach Arena), they played ZZ Top's "Tush." I think they also played "Cross-Eyed Mary" by Jethro Tull.
I've raved about this song for decades! I love it. Dave Murray on fire! The B sides are stunning. I'm a huge Thin Lizzy fan so I nearly wet myself when they did Massacre. Prowler 88 is worth a listen
A rainbows gold is absolutely awesome. I also love cross eyed Mary and King of Twilight. I listen to these songs quite often. Maiden’s version of “a rainbows gold” is definitely better than the original version.
I like all the songs that they cover and I've heard most of them if not all of them. I've got the fire and Quest for Fire have always been two of my favorite songs.
You know, "Bring Your Daughter... To The Slaughter" is also a cover. Sort of. It was originally a Bruce Dickinson solo song for the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 5. (Also, Janick Gers played on both versions.)
Great episode! Love all their so-called “B Sides”!! Massacre, Reach Out, Kill Me Ce Soir, Juanita, King Of Twilight, Hocus Pocus, All In Your Mind! Even their Doctor Doctor cover isn’t so bad!
"Diamonds and Rust" may well be better known as a Priest song than as a Joan Baez song. And Priest's versions of "The Green Manalishi" and "Better By You Better Than Me" are certainly better known than the originals.
If you visit London be sure to visit the Cart And Horses pub in Stratford. Easy to get to from the rail station. It's where Maiden played their first gigs in 1976 and has been turned into an Iron Maiden themed pub.
I have always loved the Doctor Doctor cover and think that is Blaze best performance for the band. However the Somewhere in time B-sides are their way best and Reach Out being my favourite
I totally agree! Blaze did great with Doctor Doctor & Reach Out is probably my favorite, cause I mean- Adrian Fucking Smith! It was the first song I got hear him do vocals on too, love it!
I think they should release a covers album called the Cover Ups. But I've Got Fire is not the only song by Montrose they covered. The other song by Montrose they covered was Space Station #5. These were mostly with Sammy Hagar before his solo career and his days with Van Halen. I have been celebrating the guitarist Ronnie Montrose who unfortunatley died of a self inflicted gunshot wound 11 years ago on March 3rd, 2012.
"King of Twilight" a Nektar cover that was released als B side of the Aces High single. In fact, the Iron Maiden cover is a mix between King of Twilight and "Crying in the Dark" the song immediately previous in the Nektar Album "A Tab in the Ocean".
I was today years old when I discovered "I've got the Fire" was a cover from someone else. I mean, the original song from Montrose (who I never heard of till today also) came out in 1974... when I was 4 years old...
Is not just Bruce, is Nicko too, the band lost a lot of edge without Paul, but when Clive was kicked out of the band the band never sounded dangerous again.
since Cross-Eyed Mary was on the Piece of Mind picture disc that i bought in 5th grade, that gets the nod as my favorite. I played it on the picture disc once and taped it. Also, it’s probably splitting hairs…But Bring Your Daughter is a cover song.
As a huge lizzy fan the cover of massacre was great, they also have an unreleased cover of thin lizzy angel of death which you can’t find anywhere , (not slayer version this version is older). Also Montrose was such an underrated band in the 70s so the cover of “I got the fire” was a treat
My favourite cover by Maiden is Thin Lizzy's Massacre, from the Seventh Son sessions. I'd never actually heard I've Got the Fire with Di'anno on vocals though, thanks for that, it's immense
But where is Sanctuary?? They used to play this song veeery often in early yesrs, but... they don't anymore. It's a pity it is not included at any album. Ps i know it's not a cover, just saying...
Iron Maiden covers : WOMEN IN UNIFORM (Skyhooks cover) I'VE GOT THE FIRE (Montrose cover) CROSS-EYED MARY (Jethro Tull cover) RAINBOW'S GOLD (Beckett cover) CRYING IN THE DARK / KING OF TWILIGHT (Nektar medley cover) THAT GIRL (FM cover) JUANITA (Marshall Fury cover) MASSACRE (Thin Lizzy cover) ALL IN YOUR MIND (Stray cover) I'M A MOVER (Free cover) CE SOIR (THAT NIGHT) (Golden Earring cover) COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN (Led Zeppelin cover) DOCTOR, DOCTOR (UFO cover) MY GENERATION (The Who cover) HOCUS POCUS (Focus cover) Did I miss any?
RIP Ronnie Montrose! My personal fave is 'I got the fire' I love this song, I saw Diamond Head on their 7 years gone tour in 1991. doing a cover of Montrose's 'Rock The Nation' , I personally would have preferred to have seen their own 'Lightning to The Nations' - But hey ho! If you want to hear the original, it is on the Album 'Paper Money ' HOABL
Iron maiden guitarist Adrian Smith is a believer in our Creator and he is a humble kind person who loves to talk about good fishing spots in America. He loves fishing and he is good at it too people. I don't think they recorded it for a record or a B-side, but I recall seeing a video once of Iron Maiden performing a Bob Seeger song titled "Rosalie." Bob Seeger isn't exactly what you would call heavy metal, or even particularly hard rock, so at first glance it seems like an odd choice. Interestingly enough, this song was also covered on other occasions by both Thin Lizzy and Motorhead. The really strange coincidence is that later Metallica would cover songs from all four of these artists, three on Garage, Inc., and one on a Kerrang magazine Iron Maiden tribute CD. (By the way, Metallica's rendition of "Remember Tomorrow" is amazing! If anyone out there hasn't heard it, go check it out! Maiden's version is still tops, of course, but this is a darn good tribute.)

Let's be honest; even though Maiden does not play my preferred genre of metal, at this point they can't cover songs without embarassing the original writer by playing it better, musically... even if they did it note for note, their timing would be better. They are simply that experienced and talented. Covering songs is for when you just started out and the bassist is the guitarist who drew the short straw.
I don't know about that. Budgies' version I Can't See My Feelings is better than Maiden's cover, and Maiden's cover of My Generation is not as good as the original
@@Gregbaltzer There's a lot of covers that appeal to me more than the original. But when a band of such technical skill does a cover, the only way it can sound right is if they embarass the original by playing it technically a lot better... it's a lose-lose proposition. Caveats apply, of course.

No it's not Bruce Dickinson the reason. It's the management. It's all about the management.Period. That's why they did such a big success. Yes they had the talent, the knowledge and the passion but a big part of their career is based on the management.
Without doubt Golden Earring's "Kill Me Ce Soir"!! Great tune. Fun fact is the word "Asasination". it should be "assassinat" in French. Nobody mentioned it to them, so they did ..... the original....
Sure, Steve Harris isn't a great singer, but he used to sing backup harmony parts in the early days. If there's one thing Maiden can use live it's another voice, yet he longer sings. So now they have one less voice and one too many guitar players.
Iron Maiden could get kicked out of Guitar Center for playing 'Smoke on the Water'. Just sayin'. Maybe the fans have 'Communication Breakdown' with Iron Maiden and if we let them know, maybe they can play it during their 'Cross-Eyed Mary' tour of covers. That tour could be a 'Massacre' and they would have to call out, 'Doctor Doctor' who might be out 'Space Truckin' with 'Women in Uniform' or perhaps 'That Girl'. They could search 'Space Station #5 for the 'King of Twilight' for 'My Generation' but that could be 'All in Your Mind' or just 'Hocus Pocus'. Maybe just 'Kill Me Ce Soir' and I'll 'Roll Over Vic Vella' because 'I'm a Mover' and 'I Can't See My Feelings'. No matter if there is 'Rainbow's Gold' or not 'I've Got The Fire'.
I think the impression that this song sounds more like a cover than a true Maiden song is due to the fact that it was included on the Best of the B'Sides album, amid covers and other re-recordings.
I don't know the covers Iron Maiden did but their version of The Fire was good - the song really sounded like an Iron Maiden original. I didn't think much of women in uniform. After hearing it came from Skyhooks I need say no more.
Most of the time established bands will record covers in the studio as a way to get their sound dialed in before they start recording the originals. I suspect Maiden is no different in this regad. And once you have those tracks, there's no reason not to throw them on a b-side so the die hard fans can hear them.
They lost some aggression when Dianno left ...but also gained something with Bruce...I like a lot of Bruce's stuff with them...but Dianno was my favorite...
As a Maiden Fan I got my knives already sharpened, when I read the title of that video. I don't know if I should be glad, reliefed or infuriated to be clickbaited.
Which is your favourite cover song by Iron Maiden?

It is hard to choose only one, but if I have to, I say Massacre (Thin Lizzy)😎🤘
Honestly hocus pocus (Focus) Nicko kills the vocals
Doctor Doctor with Blaze! Just perfect rendition of a classic
That Girl from 1986, original by FM. B-Side from Stranger In A Strange Land. Beautiful and eerie guitar melodies. Haunting mood

Rainbows Gold!
I didn't know they'd covered Cross Eyed Mary and I'm a long time fan of Iron Maiden and Jethro Tull.
💪😎👍 Remember "Reach Out" with Adrian
Smith on vocals? There's actually a video 😳

I love seeing these rare old clips of Iron Maiden. You really do your research and it is appreciated! :)
Thank you! So glad you enjoy it!
The studio versions of 'I've Got the Fire' and 'Cross-eyed Mary' are my favorite Iron Maiden cover tracks ever.
IMO, Maiden's 80's b-sides were a treasure, part of the band's mystique, and part of the reason some call 80-88 the golden years. They could make any song sound amazing.

no kidding when i first heard it, it blew my mind away like it was an IM song from SIT from another universe
It wad recorded during the recording of SIT. So was Huddersfield, Reach Out, and Juanita
It’s because of the iconic guitar tone they had on Somewhere in Time. As soon as you hear that tone, you know it’s from the SIT era.
Being a huge Maiden fan for so long, these are the kind of videos I most appreciate. Where you dive into some obscure topic. Awesome. More of that please! 🤘🇺🇦
oh my god its everywhere, that flag, i mean wtf is everything politics now? you cant go to take a shit alone, without seeing that flag, cmon

Dave Murray on fire!

I'm a huge Thin Lizzy fan so I nearly wet myself when they did Massacre.

i think the less energy from the studio version is due to Nicko, Clive just was a powertrain when it came to straight rocking beats.

Love your videos and Cross Eyed Mary is a favorite since I bought the 12 inch single of the Trooper many years ago!
Cross Eyed Mary, I've Got the Fire, Rainbow's Gold and King of Twilight are all outstandingly done.
I have always loved the Doctor Doctor cover and think that is Blaze best performance for the band.
However the Somewhere in time B-sides are their way best and Reach Out being my favourite

Iron Maiden did perform a cover of ZZ Top “Tush” several times on the Piece of Mind tour.

I got the fire is a gem. I still use it to soundcheck the bass and it's decent warm up too!
Well we all know they've been on Quest for Fire since Piece of Mind, so with any luck they'll finish their quest and bring it back.
King of twilight without second thought. It's not the cover but that i learned this aong from them and it instantly became one of my favorite songs
Their best cover is not a cover of a song but a cover of a poem!
In my opinion, Iron Maiden is a mysterious band and there are many other good songs that people don't know about
I think Cross-Eyed Mary is my favourite Maiden cover, the production is 🔥

Massacre is my favourite cover they have done. It is true enough to the original but it maidenized
My favorite b-side is communication breakdown, the re- recorded versión of Charlotte and judgement day ...
That Montrose album was a pretty big thing back in the day, the IM camp knew about it for sure....
When Doctor, Doctor starts is one of the greatest moments in life
My favorite version of 'I've got the fire" was performed by a little known band named 'AXE'
